I guess you must be a software developer to get any respect in this community. |
That probably helps, but I think the main thing isn't what you do for a living, but how you conduct yourself, as far as these forums are concerned. My impression of umisef is that he discusses ideas and doesn't get personal, and isn't so emotionally attached to any viewpoint or cause or to preserving his ego that he can't acknowledge someone's counterargument gracefully if the logic or information suggests that he should. That's what earns him, or anyone, respect, I think. Vocation just comes into it when the experience can be a resource in the discussion, probably, and also reflects on your character in some cases.

People are way too fond of trashing just about anything I say. |
As a guy who also gets predictable reactions from some people because of what they associate me with (rightly or wrongly), I understand that feeling. But I think it'd be good to reflect on how you say things as well as what you say. If you join a discussion not in a confrontational way, but as if you are working collectively with others to arrive at the best ideas or best perceptions of events, then the mood is much different and no doubt the reactions will be also. (Not that I don't have my own problems sticking to that philosophy, but at least it's an ideal to try for. )
Sorry for continuing on an off-topic tangent, but thought it might be worth it, big picture-wise.
