You'd think for Billion dollars they would have come up with something that would have changed the world of computing. |
Except computing is a commodity now. Once something is a commodity, no amount of money can force a world-changing advance.
Think of the vacuum cleaner. Nothing really changed for a long long time. details were refined, materials improved, trends followed. But a 1980 vacuum was essentially the same as a 1950 vacuum, only sleeker and fancier. When things *did* change dramatically, it was some nutjob designer living on his wife's teacher salary who did it. And it took the persistence of 5 years and 5127 prototypes. And even then the establishment was simply Not Interested[tm].
Something like that *may* happen to computing, if we are really really lucky. But just like no amount of money could ever have produced a Dyson vacuum without a James Dyson, no amount of money can produce the Next Big Thing in computing without the weirdo who has the idea for the Next Big Thing. And, alas, until they actually succeed, those brilliant weirdos are virtually indistinguishable from weirdos who are just weird, without the brilliance. |
