Calling all users and dealers!

On a recent thread there seems to be some indication of a disengagement between dealers and users ( at least on this site ). I'd like to see this stop, in fact I'd like to see discussion continue but for personal feelings to keep out of the way of it.

Either on this board, or on a mailing list, I'd like to see dealers and users coming together with ideas on how to promote the platform, demonstrate its strengths and weaknesses, come up with ideas for developments, uses, guides, fun, events and whatnot where we can rekindle the enthusiasm that has been lost for the platform - now we actually HAVE a platform.

So, could at least some of the A1 dealers, people involved in OS4 now and OS4 future and users who have ideas, time, creativity and interest please reply on this thread as to whether or not they are interested in helping out and how. If you have an idea, post it. If you see a problem, post it. If you are cynical about something like this, post it. I don't mind. We need to re-engage and to do so constructively, and try to put old differences aside.

There are two big shows coming up, one in Sweden and the other in the USA, it would be good to see a start on some of any suggested initiatives there, perhaps users attending that read and contribute to this thread could arrange to meet up and discuss some ideas.

There will be no moderation on this thread aside from strict interpretation of Terms and Conditions. The floor is yours...

I commit to producing one new bit of AmigaOS4 software, no matter how small, a month, alongside a much bigger fish thats in the works.

@Wiffy

What a great idea, I for one would love to help out any way I can. Count me in. thinking about it, it's sad that even from AmiGBG we had to use a PC to do the Shoutcast from, Anyone in the stages of writing a Shoutcast player for the Amiga? If we are gonna show boat the Amiga, we need some useful stuff.

If I can help, in anyway, gissa shout. (I still haven't ruled out visiting AMIGBG, just seeing how my life settles in the next 2 weeks)

@Mikey_C

Somebody was working on a shoutcast server (I think the author of TuneNet)

What we need is apps, apps, apps, apps, apps.

We also need Amigas - or at least Amiga software - visible in high street shops again.

Any form of raising awareness is good, articles in magazines etc.

Most of this really needs to wait until the proper release of OS4 though.

Why? I mean users can already go along and see AmigaOS4 in action, there is stuff like the vnc server use of AmigaOS4 ( although Im not sure that would really work on anyone but its worth a try at some point ), articles can be written to start to drum up support. If we had some kind of public indication of how soon ( a month, a quarter, a year ) before AmigaOS4.0 reaches its GA release then a build up can be engineered.

No one can say 'it doesn't exist' any more, they also cant say 'its dead'. If its promoted as a hobby operating system, then most condescending remarks don't apply do they? Then, as its further developed, the promotional aspect can grow with it.

The Problem is that we also have a whole load of Apps available already, like for example, Audio Evolution, Web server, Apache/PHP ports, Hollywood and soon Pagestream 5

IMHO all Amiga computer shows should be running, demonstrating programs like this, in the hope that we can make the odd passing journo, or punter say, hey, I could use that!

Imagine for example, an A1 at a show running as an internet server, and all the AmigaOne's there linked to it? Imagine some outstanding presentation running on Hollywood? a running demonstration of Audio Evolution etc.

That's what we should be aiming to do at each and every Amiga show throughout the globe

Looking at the categories of software thats been uploaded to os4depot gives a good indication of where we are:

90 Utility
68 Game
50 Development
39 Graphics
26 Audio
25 Emulation
24 Network
16 Demo
12 Video
11 Driver
5 Datatype
3 Library
0 Office

Utilities and games are all very well and useful, Development being so healthy is a promising sign. Graphics and Audio stuff when you actually look in the categories is interesting as to what you can do, Emulation Im never sure about what that sayes about a platform But right at the bottom we have 'Office'.

Oopsie.

Here Id like to see demo versions of Pagestream for OS4, and whatever else we can get in there. The reason for using the AmigaOS instead of just booting into a game was to get productive. Productivity software

We already have good streamers... We need a Broadcaster and I'm with you on that one.

As we have a 2mb (down) ADSL connection at BB3 could we do a Hollywood presentation ?

Pagestream outputted to a projector ?

Could Rhino demo Pagestream as he knows it pretty well ?

All thoughts...

count me in as well Dave, Although my coding expertise went as far as making a fkey menu in Amos !!

We certainly need to do something to "Stop the Rot".

@The_Editor

And a big goodonya for the big triple-0

I'd ask that dealers try to acquire more OS4 compatible software to be kept in stock. As it stands, when surfing Amiga shops, I'm not really sure whether a program is useful or not in OS4.

Also if it were possible, could older software apps, eg Final Writer or Wordworth (I'm just giving examples here) be resurrected? I would assume that buying the rights to these for poritn would be too expensive eh?

@poweramiga2002

mate, I refer to a Shoutcast SENDER! So that I can play music, to people like you, or do a live webcast via an AmigaOne

Productivity indeed. I used to do everything on Amiga. Today it's just
setting's and stuff and producing on the old A1200.

FW97 and DPIV used to be my stuff but won't work on A1. I cannot program but only use, I'd be happy to buy equivalent programs.

I miss the Amiga trek series. The amiga needs continuation of this great neverending saga, with the current players/actors involved.

I just did a quick port of sqlite to AmigaOS4 ( at least it now builds - lol ), no idea if it works yet, anyone who is familiar with it on Unix or Windows who wants to help get it to a working SQL server on AmigaOS4 please email me to join a mailing list and binaries server.

The aim will be to integrate it with a few other things.

-------------

Specific to this thread I think demonstrations of products is a good, cracking idea, things need to be demonstrated in terms of 'how to get x done using AmigaOS4 and applications available to it'.

Slick demonstration packages and downloads of presentation foils and speakers notes to be reused at user groups around the globe would also I think be useful.

In my direct dealing with various dealers I've found them to be very friendly and helpful, I think the problem has been with Eyetechs suppy to THEM.
