Thank you for the clarification. I'd like to ask something, and I really hope you won't take this the wrong way but... we never hear of Genesi having CPU shortages. What do they do that you don't?

Not publicise their CPU shortages?
(Naw, we'd probably have heard about them anyway)Last edited by T_Bone on 09-Jun-2005 at 03:22 AM.

They are in bed with Freescale!
I don't think Freescale will let there be an CPU shartage as they sell the board an CPU cards on their site.

So, isn't Freescale's bed big enough for three?

Hi Alan!
Nice of you to reply and clarify things.
First an out of context question. Are you going going to Gothenburg AmiGBG 2005?
Is it not possible to get together with other small buyers of PPC CPU's and make a larger group buy? A batch of 10000 CPU's every two months maybe would make IBM a little more keen to talk

I should think so. Freescale are real easy..
Well tell that to Eyetech. I would have liked to have seen 7447A 1.3GHz CPU's on the µA1-C from the start. Even if it would have been 50$ more expensive. 800MHz 750GX is fine for the industry but the commercial need is for the Altivec which is sadly missing from the 750GX.

| I want to purchase another µA1-C with 750GX, but Vesalia doesn't have them currently. Seems most of the dealers are out of stock as well as Eyetech themselves. Looks like more demand than supply to me. I hope the next batch of micros will be with GX, since I am used to the speed of it, and the FX might come as a disappointment in term of speeds to me. Sadly Eyetech wouldn't risk producing a bigger batch of boards (5000 for example) and lowering the price - making the micros more attractive to the customer. NO, please no. To my knowedge the Pegs never had GX, only FX, and it's slower._________________ Games, programs, reviews |

Thanks for the clarification Alan.
I know that every board design has a clock speed limitation due to capacitive trace coupling. Have you tried a faster cpu in the µA1 & will the current memory modules handle a faster clock speed? At what point would a faster clock speed require a redesign of the board? Ignoring increased costs here. Last edited by sundown on 09-Jun-2005 at 06:02 AM.

What does this mean ? that we will have a new bunch of MicroA1-C or (I) ? and what about some new AmigaOne XE (or an hypothetical XC) ?
.. and all bugfixed...
Well I want to buy an expandible and powerfull Amiga to use at work not a small Micro-Amiga.. |

Resume of the 20 questions.
1. The A1-I, A1-XC has been designed, Eyetech has the rights to the designs, but needs an industrial deal to produce enough boards to sell them at reasonable prices.
2. The A1-C does not have the bugs of the A1-XE or A1-SE despite how many times the usual suspects try to tell you it does.
3. The A1-C will continue to be produced and assembled in low volume quantities as long as there is demand for it.
As for 'expandable', I have asked about 3 way expansion card compatibility and cpu upgrades, waiting for an answer on that one. |

Thank you.
Now my question is... why they need an industrial order for the A1-I A1-XC or the XE.. and not for the A1-C ?
or maybe they have an industrial order for it ?
If they do not need an industrial volume to produce the A1-C and they want to make a run of one type of Amiga, seems they have selected the lowest selling cost amiga model.
this is a penalty to who wants a little bit more expansive amiga... ( like XE or XC )

It's the Articia S that is holding back the memspeed so there's no real problem adding higher frequency CPU's. For example, the 750GX has a 200MHz FSB but Articia S only supports 133MHz which is the memory speed also.
The problem with this is that the major speed difference between FX and GX we should have seen is not there due to Articia S. We are currently running 750GX 800MHz at 70-80% of it's capacity.

Very true, but dont forget the advantage of the GX is that it runs a whole lot cooler (it draws less power) than the FX at the same clock speed. therefore it doesnt need a fan at those speeds, saving costs. quite brilliant, really, except the problems resetting the caches kinda throws a spanner in the works... _________________ XH558 - the worlds last flying Vulcan. ok, its actually XL426 in the picture but you know what I mean. |

Hi Mr. Redhouse,
It helps immensely, and really, I wish you could have posted this one year ago (and every two months, thereafter), along with the 20 answers.
You may have held on to about 200 extra customers.
Recently there's been a spate of users departing, if you hadn't noticed, like Bobsonsirjonny (who had essentially, a free microAmigaOne), Uncharted, Nickman, others, and the ever popular Doommaster, too.
Please tell us about the XCs specifications, and why we can't get it going.
OR, do we want that Mystery Device, instead?? |

"Now my question is... why they need an industrial order for the A1-I A1-XC or the XE.. and not for the A1-C ? "
Because the costs involved in producing a board are so prohibitive they can't afford to split the market. If they had on sale, at the same time, the A1-I, the A1-XC and the A1-C the total market of boards they can sell to the Amiga Enthusiast ( either existing or returning ) at this point in the AmigaOS4 lifecycle ( development, early adopters ) then each might get 1/3 of the sales and the prices would have to be higher accordingly.
