@Tomas

they can't take the patent. though they can make it worthless to the patent holder.

So what are would be the reason for Gary leaving? I am just thinking to myself that Gary is more of a business man than an Amiga enthusiest. But, the question does bring about a few ideas.

Perhaps he was hoping that we would be jumping on the mobile side of things, but he did not realize that our loyalty is to Amiga OS running on a desktop. Personally I just want a phone to be a phone that I can call someone on. I do not want it to be a digital camera or an internet surfing device or even a charge card. I just want it to be a phone.

Did some deals fall through or not materialize that he had hoped would?

Was there not enough development done? I do not see how that could be possible with everything that so far has been done, but perhaps he was looking for a Firefox or Office port of some sort.

Perhaps he just liked something else better, so he is off to do that instead. If that is the case then I just wish him well.

I never really expected him to hang around that long anyway. He was never really as enthusiastic as most of us are. He is just a business man looking for a way to make some money.

The next question is how does this, or does this affect the focus of what we are all here for?

Hi nzv58l,

1) Garry Hare wanted to make some money.

2) He came with no money (or not much) of his own, more than likely. (Well, none he was willing to gamble with, anyway.)

3) He tried to get OTHER PEOPLE'S money to get the Boing Ball rolling.

4) He couldn't.

5) Step 5, leave.

This happens EVERY DAY in corporate America.

There should be no "shock and awe" on our part by any of us.

BUT, he's gonna kick himself in the ass REPEATEDLY for the rest of his life, when he sees the fortunes of Amiga Inc. cross that first $1 billion!!!!!!!!

What's him leaving mean to us?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Amiga Inc. can't change what's happening, to our benefit, nor to our detriment.

It's strictly up to US to make this a PASS or FAIL endeavour!!!!!

Boy, we sure will be able to tell a whale of a tale 15 years from now, huh?

To Garry Hare:

A great many thanks for bailing us out in the court fiasco/dillema!!!!!!

Also, I think you made a mistake leaving.

Although you know EXACTLY what was happening behind the scenes, I think you should have contacted Jim Collas. He's wealthy, having sold tons of Gateway shares off when he left. He could have been persuaded to make a trivial investment, which would have been HUGE to the nothing we have now. (Although, I COULD be wrong, insofar as, mabe you DID try everything. Nobody that's willing to talk, knows. )

@jkirk

It took Polaroid some 20 years to win their patent fight against Kodak.

Polaroid won millions in damages... But Kodak earnt billions.

And now poor Polaroid can't even reap the benefits of their enforced patent... The worlds going digital !!

[edit]

A bit like another giant company...

Walk all over someone else patent/ip/software. Get it installed as a mass installed userbase. When it finally comes to court, they know they will lose .. BUT. they will have earnt multiple times more than the fine. AND the illegal use of "whatever" can't be removed because it's installed in 99% of all computers !!

A Win Win out of a lose !!

I sure am hell interested in why Ryan registered a company under the Amiga name, and i am also wondering why no one had commented or done anything about it.
The only reason anyone should be concerned is because ryan is a known scumbag. he's done more to screw up various people and companies in our amiga universe than just about anyone else I know.

I never met him (in case anyone is wondering), but I know various people who have told me stories that make one's hair stand up.

So, I wouldn't trust him for the time of day.

Garry Hare, on the other hand has not lied to anyone that I know of. He came in, did a fine job with the court case, helped send out many t-shirts - which was unexpected. At least by me!

And who knows what else he did aside from just stablizing the company. such as it is. At least one can say he left the situation in better shape.

While it doesn't interest me very much what "Amiga, Inc" does, at least they aren't embarrassing themselves.

For those people who see no purpose in a phone that does more than just make calls: I've been writing reviews of things like smart phones and multipurpose devices and I can tell you that even if you don't think this stuff is important, the rest of the world is hungry for such "toys".

One of the things I find really annoying about some of these devices is the dopie software. I hate cel phones that take long to boot up. I mean, it's a damn cel phone! What's taking so long????
It would be quite nice to see amiga OS on these devices. Mostly so I can make things look and act the way I want them to.

At the last Amiga Meeting we had around these parts there was some news about AMiga, Inc having some sort of deal with the NFL. I'm not sure exactly what it means, but there's some sort of delivery system (Amiga Anywhere) made available to the NFL, maybe during games? I'm still looking for where this info is.

(You see how well I pay attention to this, right )
anyway, my point is that they are busy doing their thing. even if it's not our thing. so what? we should concern ourselves with what interests us.

and, the only thing we can do about that ryan weirdo is watch him and NEVER believe anything he says. and never buy anything from him.

RE: Garry. It's hard to tell his reasons. Maybe something unethical was going on and he left, or maybe he started it, maybe maybe maybe. Maybe he had some goals, including $ obviously, that couldn't be or weren't met, so he moved on. Maybe he never cared much about the OS, and saw AA and the name being of some use. Note the lots of maybes yet?

Hopefully at some point, the real details will be known, until then it's all 'maybes.'

Yeah, and some people got t-shirts

Regarding the NHL 'stuff,' see
the news release at AIs site , that's about all any one of us knows about it.

I don't think Garry's interested in sales, I think he's the guy people call to go to conventions representing various startups to try and lure in investors.

@thread

Here's a link and rumors I found on Amiganews.de

http://www.flyingmice.com/cgi-bin/squidcgi/mbmessage.pl/amiga/122432.shtml

Apparantly Amy'05 should have been the official Amiga with Amiga Inc. own Amiga OS, cutting OFF Hyperion!

@Thread

I've read most of the thread, but I have to admit that I don't recall every line of every post. This point has probably already been brought up, and if it has feel free to ignore this post.

One question has stuck out in my mind more than any other. WHY did Garry feel the need to "inform" the community about his decision? I never felt that Garry had the highest regard for the community and it seemed at times he felt that everyone involved in it was a bit unstable (on some days not a bad assessment to be honest). It's not like his email was public and he wanted to avoid getting flooded with emails or that he had any serious connection to the community. After being involved with some speeches and interviews I'm sure he witnessed how simple statements can start a firestorm.

I applaud his decision for being honest and letting everyone know and it does show character on his part, yet part of me still wonders if he was trying to "stir the pot" a bit after leaving.

Flames cheerfully ignored.

From what I know it's not confirmed, Gray don't communicate using forums like Bill Mc Even, or BBRV, I'm waiting for official statement, it's normal when you replace the CEO of company.

I just want to add to this thread, WOW, my password still works, and I can add to this thread....I haven't posted in a long time.

I enjoyed Rogue's comments about Amiga Corp (aka Ryan's latest venture)...and how the use of the word 'Amiga' is only trademarked in relation to Amiga Incs. line of business. It was a nice attempt to use some logic to deflect common sense, but Ryan isn't registering Amiga Corp to run AmigaLand amusement park...Ryan C was an amiga dealer. While, his plans to sell amiga clones were pie-n-the sky nonsense, his amiga dealership, online sales of Amiga parts and software products (he really invested in AmigaDE, for example), was real. Common sense says that he isn't registering this name in some unrelated field where the use of the Amiga trademark would not create product confusion.

You asked what he did, thinking he did nothing as far as you know...well he was an amiga dealer, reseller of AmigaDE, bought HarvLaser's AmigaZone (by then Harv himself was a questionable character, I must say)...bought the Walker design's, apparently. General all around lunatic, but no way to describe him, except as one of our lunatics, I'm afraid.

On the other hand, I will agree that this is just one loser trying to embarass another loser, and probably didn't warrant attention.

I also don't care that Garry Hare quit, and I don't care who replaces him, and I won't care when that guy quits either.

I would like to see Amiga OS 4 be complete, and it be sold with hardware. I also find MorphOS to be interesting. Myself I moved on to mac os quite a while back, but I wish you all the best.

@RobertDupuy

The point is that while we know it's plausible that Ryan WILL be doing something bad with the name Amiga, this isn't excactly hard evidence. So the people making rumours that since Amiga Inc haven't begun suing yet it must mean he's bought the name really should think this through again. On what ground would anyone be suing at this point? Has Ryan done anything computer related through the name Amiga Corp yet?

@NutsAboutAmiga, who said:

Or when you sell Amiga Inc to another company . We only had to wait something like a year (?) to hear about that one!

Ryan might have been eccentric, but he was a rich eccentric. He lent $100,000 to Amiga Inc which has never been repaid. This makes any court action unlikely IMO. So many better uses could that money have had...

Well Amiga inc aren't a public listed company, so I wonder if that rule applies?

Also, I wonder if Amiga inc's doors are closed for good? I ask, cos, we haven't heard a word from them Recently and even Ray Akey (HMetal) seems to have disappeared. He was always logged on #amigaworld and would occassionally chat in there.

Mind you they did sign that deal with NHL recently. I wonder what's really going on.

Although I can mostly agree with your perception of Garry Hare's personality and involvement with the amiga I believe you draw the final conclusion a bit too far as people often do here.

I think Garry's final goodbye is just keeping in style with his actions to date and as you implied in your postQuote:
it does show character on his part,
I think he probably is a man of character. He always said he wouldn't make announcements unless there was something to announce and seeing as how he won't have any reason to announce anything to this community in the future he could make this last one.

Otoh I don't think he was interested (or even thought it warranted any greater interest) in making a "big" thing of it which is why he only mailed it to DaveyD. The fact that it was announced sometime after he left is also an indication that he was trying to play down the importance of the thing knowing full well how the community loves it's doomsday prophecies whenever the opportunity allows it.

Strange as it may seem I think there was nothing more to the announcement than what was said!

@RobertDupuy

Hey, welcome back!

As for the Ryan thing. Like Olegil said, sure he may be up to something (you might even say it's probable that he is) but unless someone can say WHAT it is, what can anyone do about it? So far no one here has even speculated in what he is gong to do and we usually are really great at doing that without the slightest need for facts or information!
