Recently we moved to ATmega from Atmel. Much less swearing going on in my office now.

If you are tired of speaking #!@!#$% to Atmel and PIC CPU's, try these Freescale CPU's. Proper instruction set and memory maps.

Cheers,
Tim

I much prefer the PIC18F series.. Not exactly sane,
but far less intense in the stupid mistakes department.

I tend to be on Skype at the same time so I usually contain myself I can shout and swear a lot too, but I usually don't go looking for my escape key afterwards...

with the only problem really being, the codecs it supports (or rather the fact it supports less formats), and that it doesnt play encoded DVD's
Neither does MPlayer (legally) without buying a DVD player licence, if you can get one for GPL software at all. If you do have a DVD player licence it's no problem at all to play encrypted DVD movies with DVPlayer either. He wants to sell this thing, no matter if he uses MPlayer or DVPlayer or something else he has to buy all required licences for all formats he wants to support.

@joerg

So you have to buy a commercial software to be able to use a GPL one?
How crazy this world can be!

Just wait till you move from the Mega8 to the Mega128 and try to make the serial ports work --- only to discover (after MUCH head scratching, crashing and switch-on-this-LED-if-you-get-here) that the 30+ line convoluted (almost obfuscated) macros your boss wrote before you joined the company assume that addresses in I/O space and addresses in MMIO space are identical --- despite the explicit warnings in the manual that one should not make such assumptions.

*sigh* Much swearing happened that day :) Particularly because it turned out he only did so because he didn't know the gcc inline-assembly constraints for I/O space, and apparently couldn't be bothered to RTFM....

Hehe Yeah.. But really not buy software as such. Rather a licence to be able to playback
DVD's. It's the same licence every DVD player manufacturer pays.

@umisef

Hey, _I_ wrote all the Atmel software MYSELF, so that's ok
And we don't use inline assembly. We use avr-libc, GCC and binutils. In recent versions, avr-libc actually works for all our potential target MCUs. It's fracking awesome

@T_Power

Dude, I write only in C. If the instruction set and memory map is C-friendly (Atmel good, Microchip bad), I don't care for the specifics.

No, OS 4 works quite well on 266 MHz. It worked quite nicely on the PDA, I even played a round of (emulated) WBsteroids.

Was/is that PDA the mystery device? And if the answer is yes, what has changed in this time so that you can say it now to us and not kill us?

Just a little fast update..

We are currently negotiating with chip suppliers and board manufacturers. One of
our demands as customers is of course RoHS compliance. We will also try to build
the boards locally to make it more easy for us when it comes to fees and customs.

Yesterday we secured an important investment from a local venture capitalist. Their
investment will pay an initial production run of 1000 units.

We are working very hard on this and will contact all strategic partners very soon
when we have more to present. This includes Hyperion, of course. With regards to
Hyperion we do all negotiations when we have decided where to build it and how
much it will cost to us. I hope you all understand that the hardware is the number
one priority for us. After the first production run we will know how much money
is left for OS4 licensing.

Thank you all for your time, and thank you for all PM's. We read them all even if
we don't send a reply.

No, I don't understand that. When you want to make some kind of device, you have to know what it's going to cost you and the profit you can make. So you have to know beforehand what the OS4+Amiga Inc+Dolby+DTS+whatever license more is going to cost you. Before you know it you'll have a board that is going to be so expensive that you can't compete with other companies. It's completely ridiculous to build something first and then wonder if you're going to make heavy losses on it.
But hey, you had OS4 booting half-way right...?

Oh, a name for your device... iLose.
