My thoughts exactly..... some people just don't take in what they have read!

Why not do like this? Support PPC/Cell for Embeddet, and x86 for Amiga desktop?

I and many others here have suggested this path before, even if in some distant future, but the reality is that Hyperion's party line has always been as follows: "x86 sucks and we won't have anything to do with or program for it...besides, embedded is the only viable place for future of OS4 and x86 is not in the embedded markets...blah...blah...blah" This is not exactly a strong argument IMHO, or even true with regards to x86 being the embedded markets, but there it is. If an x86 port ever happens, it probably won't come from Hyperion unless they eventually see the light.

I know Hyperion says it will never happen, so that's that topic down the drain...

But i don't think we need to worry. Interesting things are happening into the further PPC-development mentioned in this topic, as well as other topics..

No, it's not. Helgis, I repeat myself, but did you notice my previous post?

How would Rogue be able to say that it will _never happen_ without even knowing what exactly will happen after the release of OS4.0 final?

Give it a rest, really. Re-iterating this topic over and over will not achieve anything.

And replying in a thread telling people to stop posting threads with this topic is acommplishing what exactly? The topic was clearly marked "Why AmigaOS SHOULDN'T Be Ported To x86...", it's far easier to skip the thread entirely if you do not wish to read about it or discuss it and let those that DO want to continue discussing it do so.

I can't for the life of me understand why some people continue to post in threads for which they claim they have no interest in reading or participating in.

Where's the logic in that? If I see a thread topic I'm not interested in, I simply don't open the thread. It's really THAT simple.

@elatour

It's possible that when AmigaOS4 is finished (for PPC), then AmigaOS would be in a stage where a port to x86 would be possible. The original plan was to move the whole AmigaOS over to a completely new concept. I think AmigaOS 5 might be the one that will run on x86, being completely different to what AmigaOS 4 is now..

Yes, Hyperion will never port AmigaOS to x86, but there will be others. Even how much Hyperion hate this, they can not prevent such a thing happening when they only have the right to port AmigaOS4 to PPC, as they don't have any other licenses and won't likely get any other CPU-licenses from Amiga Inc, cause Hyperion themselves have said they never want to port to x86...

But when Amiga Inc licenses the rights to other companies, they are free to port AmigaOS to x86. Of course, i love PPC and hope it will be cheaper and just as easy to get hardwares for as with x86. At the moment, this is not yet the case, but i do hope so...But i also agree that AmigaOS should exist on x86, too...

Remember that AmigaOS4 still lacks the things that are needed in the embedded/home-server market. Merging AmigaDE and AmigaOS into what is expected to be AmigaOS 5, would then make it a great OS to be ported to x86...

Do you have something to back this up with or is this pure speculation on your part?

Are you really so naive to think that these people developing these new powerpc boards will pay 20k euro in porting costs+licenses to get a OS4 port for it, when they there are a bunch of other OSes for free?

Hyperion will only port it to a new ppc platform if someone pays for the port. Even in that case, it is very unlikely that they will get a response from Amiga INC regarding a license for it.

The only thing announced for the amiga community is the ack and amy and neither one of those people have answered the question about if they got a license for it or not.

Like who?? AmigaINC?? Sorry, but they did not even want OS4 in the first place.. It was only done in the first place to please the crowd in the Amiga community.

Note that Helgis initially called the thread

"Why AmigaOS Should Be Ported To x86..."

before his sudden 180° change of mind.

Just look at the posts following the 1st post under "re:".

@thread

Heads up, in case this becomes one of those classic "changing topics" threads.

Good point. He doesn't know the future either. You should try to say that to Hyperion, then we'll se how they would respond on that Interesting, very interesting...

OS4.0 was already called to be in a "final" stage around Christmas 2005. The hardware situation led to the decision to release it as "Prerelease4" instead (because there would have been no hardware to sell it for).

Well, anytime we'd need a statement from the Friedens (e.g. "I already told you a million times it will never happen!"), we can just change back the thread-title to "Why AmigaOS Should Be Ported To x86..." again.

I think you're wrong there. If i remember correctly, Amiga Inc actually gave Hyperion the full right to develop AmigaOS4, as they would only focus on AmigaAnywhere, which is actually AmigaDE. The main plan is to merge AmigaDE and AmigaOS into what is expected to be AmigaOS5 when AmigaOS4 get more of the features that are necessary for the Embeddet/Home-server market. AmigaDE is based on Tao Groups' Intent technology, meaning it supports 14 different CPU-platforms, and a port to x86 would be quite possible, meaning that the new AmigaOS, which might be version 5, would run on x86 hardware....

By giving Hyperion the full right to develop AmigaOS4 doesn't mean they are not interested in AmigaOS. They actually are, but they focus on AmigaDE while Hyperion is focusing on AmigaOS4. Still, it's ironic that Hyperion doesn't realize the issue about x86 on AmigaOS....

At least he knows how to have a polite discussion without personally attacking the other party.

As for the "know-it-all" type of person, I'm sure you have lots of experience on that front.

Call me when AmigaOS4 will be a success, then you might have the right to be so condescending with people who have a different opinion than yours.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

@polka.

Put on great schedule, it looks like..or plans might have been changed...

A direct port to x86 would undoubtly be necessary yes, but not by Hyperion, but from realistic companies that don't live in a dreamworld Dreams are nice to have when having a rough day, but reality shows the clear difference between fantasy and the real world
