Latest update added to end of the thread... post #23

Just a note to pass on my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been involved with AmigaOS4, Hyperion, the Frieden brothers, the developers, the betatesters, and all the people here on Amigaworld who have helped me over the last two years.

On December 18, 2004, I fired up my brand new MicroA1 and installed AmigaOS 4.0 pre-release update 1. A few hours later, I was on the internet. Since then, I have installed update 2, update 3 and update 4.

In the early days, I used AmigaExplorer to transfer my old software to my HP pc. The HP pc became my CD burner and backup device for my MicroA1. I also found a friend called SnoopDos, which helped me troubleshoot the little glitches that occurred along the way.

These days, I regularly use the following programs from my OS4 Workbench: AWeb, NotePad, Final Writer 97, UnArc, AmiPDF, WarpView, AmigaAMP, TuneNet, DVPlayer demo, PlayCD, PPaint (Cloanto Personal Paint 7.1c), TVPaint3.6, LTris, Soliton, and the AmigaOS4 version of E-UAE (aka e-uae_0.8.29-WIP3_amigaos4-ppc_sdl). E-UAE allows me to run some old favourites under AmigaOS 3.1 on my MicroA1.

I experiment with ARexx and have written several scripts. Nothing fancy ... it's a hobby. On my old system, I used MicroRexx to create windows with menus and buttons. Sadly, MicroRexx crashes on OS4 pre-release. Now I am using KingCON to provide scrollable text windows.

Back in the day, I used SMTPpost and AmiPOP to transfer emails ... they also work fine on OS4.
SMTPpost 1.04 (09/12/1994) by Michael B. Smith (from the INetUtils 1.4 package)
AmiPOP 1.18 (19/09/1995) by Scott Ellis

Myst Demo v1.1 (CGFX version) also runs very well on OS4. I haven't got the full version yet.

And finally ...

On February 8, 2006, I installed update 4. I encountered a few issues which were eventually sorted out with help from people here on Amigaworld, as well as a little patience on my part and some plain old fashioned troubleshooting, one step at a time.

Special thanks to Stéphane Guillard, who released updated versions of the IDE drivers after update 4 was released. I am currently running with ide_driverpack_51.54.

Special thanks to Davy Wentzler (DaveAE), for updating AHI and related drivers, and for all the support he has given us for audio related troubles.

I was having problems with FormatCDRW and MakeCD producing write errors on my 4x compatible CD-RW discs. I found that my Lite-On COMBO drive actually writes at a speed much greater than 4x, so I now use "high speed" CD-R discs and "high speed" CD-RW discs instead of the 4x compatible ones.

I now use CD-RW discs and my Lexar JumpDrive USB stick for backups. My JumpDrive is formatted for FastFileSystem 51.29.

@All

Pre emptive strike. No posts about availability of OS4/hardware as this isn't the thread for it. Stay on topic, user feedback of OS4/hardware.

@redfox

Well, your story parallels mine quite closely:
I bought my system 6 days later then you, on the 24th of December 2004 from Vesalia in Germany, some 200 miles down the lane.
Hooked it up to a Philips 19" CRT that now displays in 1440 * 1080 resolution (since a few years I now wear spectacles for reading purposes, +1.00 or +1.50 I think), but looking for a 21" WideScreen TFT in the January clearance sale.

I, too, went through update #2, #3 and #4 and still have them sitting in their respective partitions, aptly named "OS4.0 #2", "OS4.0 #3" and "OS4.0 #4" . The latter one has the highest boot priority so the other two are just sitting there wasting 250Mb of precious space each on a 120Gb Maxtor. Of those 120Gb is 100Gb still unpartitioned. The rest is divided up among 12 partitions varying from 100Mb to 6Gb in size.

A CD-RV from Samsung is also available, but used very little. At one time I had a ZIP100 IDE installed, but was none to happy with the results. Here too, all praise to Stéphane Guillard for his unrelentless efforts in helping us getting those things to work. Removed the unit as it did not work to my expectations AND the (gray) color of its bezel did not match the glossy black exterior of my Morex Venus 668 case. I think I'll try and locate a USB-unit.

Most widely used apps are
-- Notepad for ALL textbased appliances like source editing
-- GCC as per the latest publically available SDK
-- WordWorth 7.01 (GRs a bit)
-- AWeb and IBrowse for testing changes to my site before it goes live
-- Apache to accomodate the browsers
-- AmigaTradeCenter to upload these pages to the website
-- Wesnoth including sound hiccups (still, with latest version)
-- tinkering with e-uae (just failing to catch the hype)
-- SaMBa & SMB-mount

Not doing any email stuff (yet) as my wife and I share a single email account which we access from the XP-box. Most emails are for her anyway.

Yeah, a big hugh is definatly in place here. So guys if you fancy a big hug from a 6'6" tall, 13st 5lbs and a handfull of oz's weighing, bearded fellow, you may come and collect, otherwise a cyberhug must make do! But I then had preferred all those involved to be females!

Thanks! And keep on going, please.

Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year to all of you readers!

Nice positive post. I like you love my A1 933 XE. I have almost all my old amiga software working and it is my main machine. What I am learning now is how much I really did't know about the old classic system and it's abilities, many of which are replicated or improved in AOS4. That is probably down the the almost bog standard setup I had with my A1200.

There is so much more to learn and a lot of that is on hold until many of the old community can join in and re-invigurate the old scene.

That is for the future, for now like you I can only say I love this brilliant OS and hope we go forward from here.

Time for another update from redfox. Just a reminder that I am an ordinary user, not a beta tester or developer, so my experiences may not be the same as yours ...

On December 18, 2004, I fired up my brand new machine and installed AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update 1. A few hours later, I was on the internet. Since then, I have installed update 2, update 3, update 4 and The Final Update.

I have been running Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release The Final Update since about December 26, 2006. Had a few niggles along the way, but running very stable since February 3, 2007. I do not run my machine 24/7. It is only powered on when I want to use it. It is powered on for several hours at a time on some days, but is powered off when I'm done. I still get the occasional burp when closing IBrowse, might be related to running NotePad and TuneNet or AmigaAMP at the same time, happens so rarely, that I am not sure.

To Hyperion, the Frieden brothers, the developers and the beta testers ...
Thanks. IMHO, Amiga OS 4.0 The Final Update is great. Just a few niggles.

To the many people on amigaworld who have helped me in the past ...
Thanks. I appreciate all the help and insights. This has been an interesting journey.

To Justin and Adam ...
Thanks for selling me my AmigaOne Micro. It has been a wonderful little computer, which has provided me with many hours of enjoyment.

MY CHANGES TO OS4 FINAL ...

My changes to Startup-Sequence ...
C:SetPatch ADDCHIPRAM 2 QUIET
Run >NIL: C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)

My changes to Devs:Monitors/Radeon Tooltypes ...
(INTERRUPT=Yes)
This change stopped the black screen on power-up.

My changes to WBStartUP ...
Moved ScreenBlankerEngine to Commodities drawer.
Added ClickToFront.
Resulting WBStartUP ... RAWBInfo, DefIcons, AsyncWB, AmiDock, ClickToFront.

Although I really like Limpid Clock, I rarely run it anymore, because it seems to interact with other stuff.

My main applications are IBrowse, NotePad, DvPlayer, AmigaAMP, TuneNet, AmiPDF, MultiView, Unarc, WarpView, PPaint, TVPaint3.6, MakeCD and some games. I use E-UAE for my really old favourites.

It is time for another update. I have been running OS4 for about 3 years 8 months and 3 weeks. I use my OS4 system every day. AmigaOS 4.1 on order, should be arriving soon.

Many thanks to all the people who have been involved with OS4, and to everyone who has helped me get this far.

My system specs:
µA1-C with IBM PPC 750 GX CPU and 256 MB RAM
Western Digital 250 GB hard drive (my old 40 GB Maxtor died)
Antec Minuet Piano Black Slimline PC case with 220 Watt ATX12V power supply
LiteOn DVD combo drive
AmigaOS 4.0 July 2007 Update
FFS2Fix
Lexar 512 MB JumpDrive USB stick formatted for FFS
Kingston DataTraveler 512 MB USB stick formatted for FAT

I use the following software on a regular basis. Some of it is PPC and some of it is 68K.

OWB 2.8
AWebPPC (aka AWeb APL Lite)
IBrowse 2.4 OEM version
AmigaShell
NotePad
Final Writer 97
Personal Paint 7
TV Paint 3.59
UnArc
MultiView
WarpView
AmiPDF
DvPlayer
AmigaAMP
TuneNet
AmiDVD
MakeCD
AExplorer (aka Amiga Explorer)
MicroRexx
SMTPpost
AmiPOP
KingCON1.7b_OS4 from OS4 Pre-release CD
AmigaOS4/PPC version of E-UAE

I have also used the following software (not as much as the others above):
AWNPipe
Real3D
WookieChat
AmIRC
SimpleMail
YAM2.4
Amiga Mosaic
Voyager

Amiga Vision also works directly with OS4 if you are very careful, however it works best with E-UAE.

I use E-UAE to provide a more suitable environment for a few old favourites that want AmigaOS 3.1 and the emulated amiga chip set.

You can hardly put the OS on such a drive! Or did you mean:
Western Digital 250 Gb hard drive (my old 80 Gb Maxtor died)

Early Sundaymorning nitpicking...

Hope to receive my copy of OS4.1 tomorrow.

I had problems with Limpid initially.
In the menu, select Set Task Priority.
I changed it to zero and have had no problems since.

RxMUI is your friend:

Humm. He said he is not an advanced programmer. I would recommend using the easy AWNPipe to build ARexx GUI-driven scripts (Reaction GUI). Just my though.

Edit: what's wrong with the layout? Ok removed the link in quote

Have you tried both of them? I don't believe AWNPipe is simpler than RxMUI...

Yes. I also tried and did with Triton. In decreasing difficulty, I put MUI/Triton/AWNPipe. I switched to AWNPipe long ago.

Bye,

Thanks for your interest. I didn't think I would generate any comments at all.

I'm not an advanced programmer. I do what I need for fun and learn as I go. Most of my stuff is very simple, display a file (or selected portion of a file) in a text window, accept text input or instructions from the user, append text to the file, etc. Right now I use ARexx for the program, CON: or KCON: for an interactive window, and MicroRexx for a floating menu bar. I don't know how to open a scrollable window with MicroRexx, so that is why I use KCON: for scrollable interactive windows.

I know that AWNPipe can provide interactive windows, menus and most of the things I currently do using MicroRexx, CON: and KCON:. I'm not there yet. Some of the concepts in AWNPipe are harder for me to understand, but I am tinkering and learning as I go. (So far I have learned how to add a floating menu bar for my program similar to what I did with MicroRexx.)

I haven't tried RxMUI yet.
