got upto 119 calcs open then 117 with full task manager then the computer went into convulsions, flashing the screen icons walppaer calcs and task manager alternating back and forth, It went on for 3 minutes until I closed on calc.
I even recorded it on my camera phone but I screwed up and forgot to press the save button before closing the phone:(
I can't seem to get the right combination again to get it to happen again. with 119 open you can't shutdown the computer or even close a simple ups monitor on the tray. It can't open another window to confirm the action.

3069 Calculators here. The mouse pointer is movable but trying to move a window takes age.

Wow!!

LOL!!
@elwood
Trying that right now.
Anyway, if we were talking about ~1300 different apps, does Amiga has that much apps at all?

I am running 726 Windows Calculators as I am typing this. According to Windows Task Manager my computer is running 1755 threads and 837 processes. The GUI is somewhat unresponsive.

Ok, now perform calculations on each one of the calculators before closing them. Oh, and I want to see a screenshot of different results.
This whole thing looks like more of a test of the OS' windowing system than its multitasking ability. With a poorGUI system, screen updates are going to be incredibly slow, regardless of how good the multitasking is.

| I got about 86 copies of DVPlayer open as well as a few tabs in Ibrowsebefore I ran out of RAM. I had to close a couple of copies down to load in a video, the video ran fine and I was able to use Ibrowse like normal, no slowdown etc.
Like someone said already It's all about memory and CPU. |

374 calculators at the same time is my limit!
I also have Snoopy,Ibrowse,Dir Opus and Transmission working at the same time.
On the Workbench bar it says 13 tasks with Ibrowse not iconified.
I am using a 1024x768 screen and my memory is 256 MB.
Apart from this at the end it opened a requester saying RAM Disk is full and after closing all the calculators my memory was only at 44%. _________________ AMIGA 500 1.5 MB ACA500/ACA1232 accelerators AMIGA 500 German CD32 unexpanded Amiga 1200 Tower on AmigaKit since years AMIGA 1300 030/50 Mhz/32 MB WB 3.9 with lots of games&demos AMIGA ONE XE G3 PPC 800 Mhz/1 GB RAM/RADEON 9250 128 MB/SATA CONTROLLER |

I agree this is completely pointless. However the loading pattern speed is interesting: of course at the begginning Calculators open very fast. At about 950 they open suddenly more slowly until about 1500 then faster. Then (don't remember the number), again slowly (1 per sec.) then faster then very very slowly until 3069. I stop watching at about 2600. The speed decrease is not linear.

Personally I do not see the point in that linux video, as it doesn't really prove anything. For example, I just ran 100 instances of "Clock". Along with the other programs that run as part of the boot up normally, this puts my Amiga running over 110-120 "applications". Sure it isn't particularly responsive at this point, but it doesn't prove anything other than I can run 120+ things at the same time - which is the point in a multitasking system isn't it?
|
Only 100?
Here's a screengrab with 301 clocks running on WB (A2000_ 060 with OS3.5)
I think its more impressive having five open requestors on-screen at once. At bottom is a "Format floppy" requestor (for df:2) with the 'Format' button, as yet, unpressed. Can Windows keep going, at all, with an un-started disk formatting?_________________ -vortexau, who's A1 XE-G4 remains at half-RAM ! At any given time, including when games worse than Quake 4 are running, both my PC and Mac are serving HTTP, FTP and files through SMB and sometimes NFS as well. I never close down my browsers so put at least 10 Firefox tabs into the equation. So, yes, of course you can run Quake 4 with a browser open, you can run Far Cry 2 with a browser open, you can run all these with a ton of other things running in the background, provided that you have enough RAM to avoid swapping out, which is the prime reason for things stuttering, not the CPU choking.
I have screenshots of my Mac G5 having more than 140 windows open on the same screen/desktop with real applications running, not instances of a calculator and OS X is the only OS I'm aware of where that many windows can actually be controlled in a reasonable manner, interface-wise, because of Expose. This is a pointless exercise, you are fighting against arbitrary safety measure limits the OS developers have put in the OSes, most of the time there is no technical reason for task limits, they are there for security and QoS purposes.Last edited by Zardoz on 15-Apr-2008 at 05:27 PM.

What is this "floppy disk" stuff you are talking about? Is it some kind of flexible USB stick?
ara (By coincidence I bought my first Intel PC in 1995 when Windows became able to format floppy disks in the background)

Well, I wouldn't call the responsivity Win9x had while formatting floppies as "formatting in the background"... _________________
