The DRI drivers were not adapted for the A1 (the usual non cacheable memory problem) until recently and Linux also triggers a hardware bug due to how the drivers implement access to the graphics card hardware.
Actually I had DRI running for a short time, but it was very unstable due to the hardware bug.

I don't know, if they have a workaround for the problem. I guess they simply access the graphics card through PCI I/O instead of PCI MMIO as Linux does it.

I tried Blender on my A1. It also crashes on my A1, so there is no way currently to get it running under A1 Linux.

I'm afraid no. I'm not sure, if the X.org developers ever fixed the problem and I was too lazy to compile X.org by myself. I'm waiting for a new X.org release in Debian experimental to try it out again. At least the X.org fbdev driver is a working alternative (albeit very slow).

I tried now a dozen of times to install Etch with various UBoot settings and it always fails at the point when it is scanning the CD content (6%)

I disabled USB front, put my DVD into PIO4 (or UMA0), use or ignore memory limit (I have 512Mo)...

My OS HD is on sii0680 and the installation is planned on a1ide HD which already has a (rather old) Debian Sarge installation.

I also dont know how critical are the setup for linux arguments in Uboot, since the installer image boots with the defaults settings.

Maybe a netinstall would help but I did not see enough information on that topic to start.

someone (Hypex ?) said to use 2 PREP partitions : one for the kernel and the other one for the netinstall.
since I already have a working dual boot, I suppose I should just create an additional partition, format it as PREP, dd the netinstall iso probably from my already install Debian Sarge, and redirect the boot in a1boot.conf to this netinstall (and of course I should create another partition for Etch itself !).

does this make sense ?

EDIT: where do I find the netinstall boot image ? the only thing I got is the debian-40r9-powerpc-netinst.iso which is the one I am using for the installation ! or is it the same thing ?

I made a Lenny netinstall image a long time ago, which you could dump to a PReP partition (with a size of 20 MB or so) and run with "diskboot 0x00500000 device:partition controller; bootm". It comes with a 2.6.31 kernel, which isn't very stable here. Thus I propose to install the old 2.6.18 kernel, which you could install from the old Sarge system afterwards (so don't delete that first!).

got stuck when scanning the CD in order to install the base system.
it stalled at 6% but not always at the same package (mawhk one day, libc another day) and the only choice afterwards is a hard reboot !

I propose to update to Lenny, which seems to be a lot more stable. You could boot from your old Debian Sarge system and chroot into the new system to do the upgrade:

mount /dev/hdxy /mnt
chroot /mnt/ /bin/bash

I am trying to get a Debian install working on my micro A1. I set up a seperate empty 8 gig hard drive, disconnected my AmigaOne hard drive, just in case...so I have connected to the A1 internal IDE bus an 8 gig HD (0) and a DVD/rw (1).
I power on and in uboot do the following:

setenv autostart yes
setenv bootdevice 0:1
setenv bootcmd diskboot
setenv bootdelay 5
setenv bootargs "root=/dev/hda2 video=aty128fb:1024x768-8@70 l2cr=0x80000000"

setenv usb1_enable off

I have two CDs with debian. One is the bootable debian installer for linux 2.4.26 from Ross's AmigaOne Linux page. The other is from a MAC debian PPC .sit file for Debian 3 that had a basedebs.tar file on it.
I put the amigaone install CD for linux into the CD.
It is necessary by the way to disable the internal USB ports, otherwise when I boot from the debian bootable CD it locks up when it goes to scan the USB bus.
I have to do a IDE reset in uboot first, then diskboot 0:1
The Debian system begins to boot from the CD....all is well.
I go through all the steps, select drivers, etc.
Then I switch CDs and install the basedebs stuff. Again, no problems.
Then I get to the next stage where I install the boot system. Everything goes well.
Next, I reboot. Hurray! it boots!
The APT configuration that comes next fails. I skip it.
The Taskel fails. I skip it.
I then get these failures...

Problem parsing dependency Conflicts
Error occured parsing netbase (NewVersion1)
Problem with getlist /ver/lib/dpkg/states
The package lists or states file could not be opened.

I try to run install again, same problems. I exit and come up to the login page...

Okay...it never asked me to assign a password anywhere? I have no idea what it could be!
I try a few things..."password" "pwd" etc...no luck.

Power off the machine. Power it back on - boot into linux ... get errors that the drive is corrupted.

So, where can I actually find a useable boot iso AND a useable install that works for the Amigaone micro?

Just spotted this by accident.

First up, Forget Ross's installer. The kernel is too old and it's no wonder your USB isn't working. And most of all this thread is about my newer installer! So old installers not working are off topic!

Secondly, that Debian version is way too old. And that installer was made to install off a standard Debian PowerPC CD which it doesn't look like you have. So that could likely affect it. Also, the repositoriess it is referencing are quite likely to have been removed. That could explain your error. But the missing password is strange!

That said, I suggest you try the installer I made up which should work better on your machine with a newer kernel. It's still outdated but newer than Woody. So grab that off the original link in post one.

Third, this site has Debian ISOs for version 4:

I tracked it down after a few Googles. A CD 1 like debian-40r9-powerpc-CD-1.iso is what you need. It is built off that.

For booting your bootargs look okay. However, to boot directly from the SLB menu you could add it as a boot file, like so. Add a file to your Linux volume once working at:
/boot/a1boot.conf

Contents such as:
Debian /boot/uImageHD-2.6.18 root=/dev/hda2 video=aty128fb:1024x768-8@70 l2cr=0x80000000

It needs a return at the end. And you need to have the kernel installed and also eventually the modules.

Third. Burn the two ISOs to disc. CDRW or DVDRW also is fine. Follow my original instructions. But you don't need to save the UBoot settings for installer boorargs, just use. So you don't clobber your own! Or set the bootargs from UBoot CLI like you have done.

Hope this gets your Debian working!

I'm also working on a better installer for Debian 6 but it's not complete yet. Wished it was as it's way better than anything done before.

Downloaded the power-PC CD-1 iso file ....
When I go through the install process, I am always locking up at the point when I try to write the EXT3 filesystem to my root partition on my 8 gig hard drive. This happens whether I pick manual or automatic. It always locks up at 33%.
Can you tell me how to format / setup a linux drive in AmigaOS4?

Any other ideas?


Okay... little update...I was able to get past this by going to AmifaDOS and reformatting the 8 gig hard drive - both partitions - as SFS/00. This time the debian install got further - to the point where it is extracting the libdb file from the basedebs...and now is just sitting there for 10 minutes or more.

Okay..got even a little further. If I use partitoner to set my root to EXT2 instead of EXT3, I get 40% into the base system install before it locks up at unpacking tzdata.
Could it be because I have 512M RAM? Do I need to limit RAM somehow?
Do I need to set something to turn off IDE DMA for my sii0680?

Seems like something is causing corruption...and it is quit repeatable.

By any chance, does the debian etch businesscard iso work?

Early kernels had trouble over 768MB but you have less. DMA for 0680 should be fine. I've rever had a problem. Unless your cable is barkwards which I've done on drives. So master drive is on end, slave to middle and longest length to IDE port IIRC. And you got a UDMA IDE cable I assume?

IIRC adding ide=nodma will turn DMA off.

As to formatting, I've only shared Linux with AmigaOS and trusted it with my harddisk.

But I did set it up in Media Toolbox first just to be safe. I used LNX\00 for the main filesystem and SWP\00 for the swap one. Both should come up in the options. Then in Linux set it up manually. Of course this way it has an RDB.

8GB is small, so is your HD okay? How long to format whole thing and check for errors?

The businesscard could work. But the installer is built from a main CD so it needs to detect files on it. If it doesn't then it wants to know where the disc is!

With a businesscard iso it will probably point the net installation to Squeeze or later. If your kernel cant handle the later version you will have problems .I managed to take a Squeeze businesscard .iso and merge it with the boot files from a Lenny netinstall CD on a Sam440ep-flex. The older versions wont work with a net install as the files have moved or are no longer stored for net installs.
