What "Elite" games can be run on AOS4.1 machines?

And what is the latest patched/re-make/whatever Elite available for AOS machines?

I know there are some waiting for the port, like:
http://oolite.org/index.shtml
http://capnhack.com/hosting/oolite/Oolite/OoSat.html

GLFrontier (runs already on PSP)
http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Hires/hiresfe2.html

Shareware downloads:
http://www.eliteclub.co.uk/download/

some Elite links: http://www.sslmit.unibo.it/zat/frontier.htm
http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/links.htm
http://www.frontier.co.uk/ (surely Hyperion is interested in porting Elite4 ASAP after it appears(hopefully it does))
http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/sixty8K/index.htm
http://www.bodar.com/dan/elite/
Elite inspired: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/

And IIRC, Finnish Pelit magazine mentioned that arcElite was the best version of the original Elite.
Is there Acorn emulator for AOS4.1 that enables playing arcElite?
http://www.jades.org/arc/elite/dcdex.htm
http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/arc/index.htm

@DiscreetFX

I haven't quite understood why David Braben hasn't revamped Elite. It has so much potential.

@The_Editor

It's a long story, but apparently Frontier Developments have started and canned Elite 4 a few times due to the technology they want to use in it not being available. The current word from Braben is that the technology is now ready, and Elite 4 will resume development after the game they are currently working on (The Outsider) is done.

Take that with a pinch of salt, as always.

@Gleng

I'm just hoping The Outsider sells well. It has the potential to be an amazing game.

As for Elite 4... this really needs to be a persistant online world.

@amipal

That would be nice, but I think they game world/universe is far too big. For example, the time skipping device (stardreamer?) couldn't work in multiplayer, so travel times between planets would take literally weeks.

Surely. They can't wait because they don't have anything else to do.

Then you will be disappointed. Braben has said that (this most recent incarnation of) Elite 4 will first be Single Player, and then later add LAN-only Multi-Player (i.e. never *Massively* Multi Player).

If you want an Elite/Frontier-like MMO, then you need to wait for Infinity: The Quest For Earth to be finished.

This has already been solved for Infinity (which is as large as Frontier). Time permanently runs at 50x speed (may be adjusted a bit once the game is in alpha testing).

@ChrisH

I've not played myself, but isn't Eve Online essentially Elite in MMORG mode?

@broadblues
Maybe Elite 1 (where you can't land on planets, planets/etc are not realistic sizes, and non-Newtonian physics), but IMHO there is a lot more interest in Elite 2 aka Frontier (where you CAN land on planets, everything is astronomically correct, Newtonian physics, etc).

I've played X3: Reunion a little bit on the PC. It needs a monstrous PC to get good framerates, but it's quite a good game in the Frontier mould. The Frontier gameplay with X3 visuals would be an incredible piece of work!!

Though I remember, back in the day, that Frontier was criticised by a few people for being too focussed on astronomical accuracy. I can see the point, but it was one of the reasons I liked Frontier in the first place...

It would be really great if someone made a PPC native port of "Illuminatus", wouldn't it?

@Daedalus

The X series on the PC is definately Elite 2: Frontier inspired if not cloned and polished.
I've never seen Elite 3 unless that's Frontier 2....

@Jupp3

Sure! Atari ST users have had too much fun with it already.

Release date 1.Apr.2009, perhaps.

I always preferred Elite to Frontier because of the flight controls. OK, Frontier was correct, but it was a pain in the #### for space combat unless you had a turret mounted laser.

I recently got re-hooked on Elite after testing the write enabled core on my Minimig. I've been blasting hell out of Thargoids on a 42" plasma display with the sound cranked up. Great fun!

Ah, I was talking about X3... I guess you could call Frontier First Encounters Elite 3 but I never really saw it that way...

@Daedalus
David Braben saw Frontier First Encounters as Elite 3, while Ian Bell felt it was Elite 2.5, and that lead to their falling out in a major way, because David had agreed with Ian to stop giving him a share of the profits from Elite 3 onwards.

@ChrisH

I just got (Elite3 / Frontier: First Encounters) running on wine on Linux.

Has anyone got it running at playable speed on a x86 emulator on PPCAmiga (AOS4/MOS2).

It "should" run, right?
"System requirements (PC version)
* 386 DX-33 (a 486 processor is recommended)
* 4MB of RAM
* 5MB hard-disk space
* 500KB free base memory
* MS-DOS 5.0 or higher
* Standard VGA graphics"
