Perhaps they are working on a SAM emulator for AMDx64...once you have that, then you can have your OS4 on x64...and sell more copies of OS4.1...

How many more times do we have to keep to get it through your heads? There will never be an X86 port of AmigaOs4.1 period.

Quote:
Hyperionmp In addition to that, and the issue has been discussed to death already, a move to x86 would be prohibitively costly. So far OS 4.x has cost well over 2 M euro to develop. That's 2.75 million USD. A move to x86 would halt all existing OS 4 development (i.e. complete feature freeze) and subsequently nearly all development time would be spent on dealing with the wide variety of x86 based hardware. In essence, Amiga OS 4.x development would grind to a complete halt and all this on the fairly far-fetched notion that tens of thousands of existing x86 owners would be willing to pay for a copy of OS 4.1 rather than just downloading a copy somewhere. No thank you, we have taken a look at the PowerPC roadmap and there is plenty of life in it including 8 core designs under 30 W. One of the main benefits of Amiga OS 4.1 is the fact that the geared entirely towards the PowerPC architecture as one of the very few operating systems around. Linux runs fine on PPC but it certainly is not optimised for this architecture in any way.

Allright, here's a new possibillity to fuss over. One that has been mentioned in the past, never attracted much attention, but one that will be highly welcomed as the current situation leaves much to be desired and is seriously lacking in capabillities: an upgraded printing system, maybe even a port of cups, the Common Unix Printing System.

I, for one, would be very pleased!

He just hinted at a PPC emulator, not at an x86 port... calm down...

And btw who believed OS4 would appear on Pegasos before ? guess it appeared so...

If this much hype just leads up to new printing system I will be shocked.

This better be something super-duper big (ie something really ambitious)

But they could write it for AMD64, or they will use something like PearPC8 that will enable AOS4 to run on Windows7

Look at how fast (or rather how slow) AROS runs under a non-virtualised x86 emulator on Windows, and now tell me you think people would seriously want to use OS4 like that? It would make OS4 look worse not better I suspect.

@Tomppeli

I think you are correct:

"I wouldn't call it a sandbox, rather a virtual environment. The old system will run in its own address space as a separate task. It's not like a UAE or anything like that. It might or might not be able to become aware of the outside world, we still need to clear up the details."

4.2? You are close, but not quite right. Hyperion are working to get AmigaOS5 out before Amiga Inc. can deliver its OS5; thus, Hyperion will be able to declare that they had OS5 before Amiga Inc. in any further court proceedings.

Yes he did, and so did I. His response was appropriate.
Your post was just an excuse to promote the "x86" platform.

uh i believe he said x64 NOT x86. besides this belongs just as well in this thread as anything else since most of this is hogwash till we are told what it actually is.
