68060 is too slow for anything and old aging hardware is not making it
any better.

When I switched to PPC system I thought I would support 68k systems
still but I could not bother to install 68k cross compiler... And I
guess never will. I could not care less for old 040/25MHz system which
could not decode even MP3s correctly.

If you overclock 68060 to 1000MHz maybe then there is new software for
68k. I could make this 68k bashing thread but I vanish now

No. Eventually. Hopefully. But I don't think a market will "magically appear" once OS4 hits the stores. Though I am convinced that it WILL raise quite some interest, and awareness, that there's a "new" kid in town.

By 4.1, I think we might start to see the potential of what the Amiga brand will bring in the future. And then, I think there's a fair chance that said market actually will appear from out of nowhere, quite magically.

Of course, having apps and games out by then already would help create a larger market, OS4 alone won't do it.

I think 68k is about to draw its final breath. If it hasn't already.

Quote:
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

Depends on the software and the price tag. If it's something I might find usable, that I can afford, then sure, absolutely. I don't own a PC and don't really intend to if I can help it, my only computers are Amigas, and my main Miggy is the AOne. I'm doing everything I need right now with Debian, I hope to be able to move over completely to OS4 as soon as possible.

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

I really don't expect anything. I'd guess that a few ports of "older" games and a few shareware-projects might appear. To begin with.
Though releases of new ports alongside PS2/GC/PC releases would be super-cool. And Amiga-specific games would be even cooler!

As the market expands, however, I don't think it's entirely impossible that we'll be "going back in time," hopefully all the way back to 87-93'ish.

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)

Anything that's really good, that I'll enjoy playing. For now, I wouldn't mind seeing the last two Monkey Islands ported, with a future sequel(??) appearing simultaneously on the Amiga.

Personally, I'm not much of a gamer these days. More of a Tetris-person (though I didn't give my little brother the Monkey Island games just for his amusement, I must admit ). Though Lucas Arts would be something I'd probably buy.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Reasonable game rates. Within the +-10% range of a PC game. Maybe I'd be prepared to shell out a few bucks more for an Amiga Only title to support the cause, if it was indeed a game I'd thoroughly enjoy. Again, I'm not much of a gamer these days..

Quote:
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

I never did scream that, don't today, never will. I have however rambled quietly something along those lines ever since I started to realize what the Amiga was all about all those years ago. I still do. And I'll keep doing it! Of course, these days you can just go on about the superiour OS, back then you could list a bunch of cool Amiga uses that couldn't reasonably be done with almost anything else..

Hopefully we'll reclaim that argument within the not too distant future.

Quote:
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)

That depends on when OS4 is actually released. You'd have a hard time convincing me that one single game will sell 1000+ copies this year, unless OS4 is released pretty much tomorrow and said game hit the shelves the day after.
However, give us OS4 early q2 and half a dozen really decent titles before q3, and I think there's a fair chance total sales might reach a few thousand.

Of cousre, if the "Smaller-A1" (was it micro or mini again? ) manages to reach beyond us "die-hard fanatics" during the first half of the year, and sales by far exceed any realistical (i.e. slightly pessimistic) assumptions based on the current community size, then I'll have to revise some of my above replies.

Let's hope I'll stand corrected!

1) There is a market for AO4. Size of the market is another matter.

2) 68K has no future, ColdFire possibly might for some applications but PPC is the road ahead.

3) Yes AOS4 PPC only software will be great!

4) New Amiga only games and ports from other platforms.

5) Prefer a port or new game? Why not both?

6) Game pricing should be the same no matter the platform.

7) Not only a new OS but getting G5 to run the hardware on. It'll kick the Mac in the ass!

8) Possibly, depends when the game and AOS4 come out. If they both come out NOW then yes. If they both come out in Nov 2004, then probably not.

Well, "a market" is a bit general, I think there is already a market, but the size of the market is pretty small. I do however think the market will now start to grow, but how much it will grow before it starts to dwindle again is decided by too many factors to post here.

Quote:
2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

Yes. Except in cases where 68k has been chosen as it allows software to run on "Classic", OS4, MorphOS, Amithlon etc.

Quote:
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

Yes.

Quote:
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

I expect to see ports of games, and maybe freeware/shareware new titles.

Quote:
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)

New invention, but ports of good games are welcome too.

Quote:
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Whether it is a port or not is irrelevant, only the quality of the title in question can determine how much I would be willing to pay.

Quote:
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

I'd wait until some companies start writing software for it again.

I think there will be around 3000 AmigaOne XE/SE owners shortly after OS4 full release. If the MicroA1 appears at a good price, then 10000 AmigaOnes is achieveable (more if it reaches the High Street). 1000 game sales is 10% of the market if that happens, which is plausible but I'm going to sit on the fence and not give a yes/no answer.

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?

Yes

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

Yes

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

I will only buy new software for my PPC Amiga (not for my 68k one)

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

Not sure. Im looking forward to some of the ports that Hyperion etc. have started.

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)

Not at all bothered where the game originates, so long as it plays well on the A1.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Depends on the quality of the game. If its good enough to warrent 40 UKP then Im willing to pay 40UKP. If its only worth a fiver....

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? ,

We need an original game, not just to the Amiga world, but new to the whole computer industry. If its last years news to the rest ofthe industry then people will look at the machine as last years news.

like you did in the past(?).

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)

No idea. I certainly hope so, it will depend on the quality of the games being produced.

I will not just buy every game going, just to support the industry. I will continue to be selective in the games I buy for MY A1. If we get some good titles (conversions and original) I think there is no reason why we couldnt have sales in the thousands for an microA1 based games machine in the future.

1) The Market (small as it is) already exists. It may expand.

2) Yes I do think 68k has no future (only retro appeal)

3) Definately

4) A few ports as well as some interesting original titles.

5) I will probably buy both ports and interesting new stuff.

6) I would pay more for an original title only if it was good enough.

7) A minimum six figure userbase (using the figure 9 of course)

8) If it apeals to the current userbase it might just be possible. Difficult to say though without knowing the size of the market.

1. I think there will be a market, i don't know if it will be a big market or which niche it fill.

2. i don't see 68k doing anything anymore in the commercial field. if i had a company i would not invest in it anymore.

3. sure thing, what is the use of a PPC if you just use it for running 68k emulation all the time. native ppc rocks!

the other questions about games don't matter much to me.

Already is a small market. Apart from dying out completely I can only imagine it will grow!

I'd have to agree with you there!

Yes indeedy! All I can get my hands on!

At the very least OS4 native versions of all the ppc stuff available now.
Quote:
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)
Have to prefer a native Amiga app here seeing as most stuff today is crap anyway!
Quote:
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?
Ported stuff is always older stuff so it would have to be cheaper than the original.

OS4 on my desktop today!

I would expect at least one game sold for every A1 on the market. Everyone who has an A1 would want to see what it can do, for themselves!

1. Yes, some of the fence squatters, and the "I'm not buying until OS4 is out" brigade for a start...

2. I think the 040 and 060 machines still have a bit of a future, nothing wrong with them for servers etc. I shall keep my 060 A4k going for as long as it lives...

3. Of course, silly question really... bit like asking "does a windows user buy only x86 software?"

4. No idea, I'm not a gamer, probably a few fps converstions, what I would like to see is some rpg/adventure stuff coming out again :)

5. Don't really care either way (See 4)

6. Not a lot. I don't play games that much, the ones I've bought have been second hand or on sale etc...

7. I've never stopped!

8. No but feel free to prove me wrong...

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?
Yes. Within the existing and old time previous amiga users, and specially in some applications like kiosks and stuff where a real time responsive OS is needed in embeeded applications..

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.
No. Despite the lack of brute force processing power there are still many uses that don't need it. Of course the 68k community is not that big, but I think most of remaining users like the Classic and will continue to use it. If the applications are written in an easily portable way, then developers will be able to target both 68k and PPC without any problems.

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?
Of course those would be my favourites;) My reason is simply the simpathy for PPC, because of the relation it has had with the Amiga in it's history. But look at the fact that PPC seems to really have a future. Seems that the three main future game consoles will be PPC for example.

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?
Not much in the beggining but I think that it has a big potential to grow. Some old game companies have a fond memory of the Amiga and would like to give their contribution for it's rebirth. In the current community there are also some talented people that would do their own stuff, though at a slow pace given obvious limitations. And there will be ports of course.

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)
A new invention. Current games mostly suck, there are a lot of ideas that are not implemented because of the control big companies have over the market.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?
Depends on the game, but I'd pay more or less the same. You have to take notice that current big game companies could sell their games for a much lower price. That would even lower piracy and to some extent raise sales.

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).
The completion of AOS4, and if it meets the expectations of course. I don't think the success in market terms has anything to do with quality of the product itself, wich itself has different aspects depending on the needs of the users. AOS with the power of PPC will fly;)

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)
Depends on he nr. of Amiga1's sold.
If the A1 lite comes out with a more appealing price, I think yes, many people, specially old time Amigga users, would buy it.
But there has to be also motivation to them. A good excuse to buy an A1 lite would be it's use as a videorecording/DVD multimedia system for the living room, for wich AOS4 is perfectly suited.
Unfortunately there hasn't been anything made to purse this, and you have to reming that some of the stuff that could be done to apply to that market doesn't need that much resoursces, yet there hasn't been nothing done! There is a good oportunity now, and they don't take it. A website, wich is viewed by millions of people would be an exmaple.

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released? Maybe, maybe not. People are fed up with Windows. So you can score a few more users there. But there is competition with Macs. These guys offer a good total solution for consumers that has not been beat till this day. IMO Amiga can score a few in those who like to build their own PCs.

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps. 68k is dead and gone. It had it's reign, now let's move on.

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ? Not that much to buy. Most software we bought in the pre-Internet era (dark ages) is now freely developped. And now with the huge popularity of open source, we purchase less and less software. What I intend to purchase will be AmigaOne and AmigaDE games.

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4? Not much. I don't foresee Hyperion porting Blizzard, DOOM 3 or any Valve games to the AmigaOne platform. I'm not gonna purchase Quake 2 or Heretic 2 for AmigaOne. Maybe at 10$ us but not at full price.

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title) Port. I wanna play with as many players as possible.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title? Same price as the Windows/Mac equivalent and only if it's a current game. Not something from a decade ago.

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?). Never see the GURU message?

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse) YES! Be Inc sold 1500 BeBox machines in half that time. And Be Inc was not as popular as Amiga so...

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps. I have no 68k, it has no future for me.

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ? Yes, and all of it I can get.

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4? Nothing much to start, ports and old games made to work on A1. Later, the good stuff. The development tools and the OS have to be out for a while before the games will appear.

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title) I would prefer an origianl, but I'll buy whatever there is.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title? If the game is priced around the cost of a PC game or a PS2 game, I'll buy it without regard for its origin.

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?). A good RPG with a Plot, story development, music, artwork, gameplay...

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse) Yes, a well made game, in a market that has little native software should sell well.

Ooooh, a test...

> 1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?

Yes. Not a huge one, but with some luck we might be able to get back some of the more recent defectors.

> 2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

I think there will be more 68k software made, although not much more.

> 3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

Certainly.

> 4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

First-person shooters, and patches for the current Hyperion lineup. I also hope there will be something from Pagan, Titan and from ZeoNeo. Epic is the big unknown here. They have aquired a number of licences for Amiga, but doesn't seem to be planning to use them right now.

Depends on which games we're talking about. I would love to see something original like Spacestation 3000, Explorer 2260, or Dafel: Bloodline finally finished and released. I'd also love to see something Alpha Centauri, or Sierra's citybuilding games (Caesar3, Pharaoh, etc.) ported, as these are masterpieces which are hard to develop on a limited budget. But I guess most of all, I'd like to see the game I've been designing implemented...but that won't happen for a while, though.

> 6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Well...the same actually. How much I'd pay depends on the quality of the product.

> 7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

I don't remember doing that...

I'll just guess yes.

So, when will you be done grading the test?

1. Yes - but it will need a steady stream of new and worthy products.

2. The PowerPC is the new 68K. Let's hope that it can be as successful for the New Amiga.

3. Absolutely. I have already made a promise to purchase every Hyperion OS4 game as soon as OS4 has been released! The New Amiga will not be short of support from this Amigan.

4. A small but healthy selection of popular PC games from the past 12-24 months. Maybe the odd original title - but as there are none in development (AFAIK) this will be at least 12 months away.

5. I would always prefer the next Shadow Of The Beast Amiga exclusive title over a port. The New Amiga needs head-turning software. I would like to see both ports and original titles.

6. The same price as the PC equivalent. The New Amiga has to remain competitive.

7. OS4.

- and, if I'm allowed to be greedy, that Shadow Of The Beast replacement I was talking about earlier.

8. If OS4 is released before the end of March then I would say that is a viable target.

Hope this helps!

Please keep in mind that I am "part-owner" of a PPC.

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released? - Yes

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps. - I believe there will be a future, as long as the hardware is servicable

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ? - Not for personal use

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4? - Hopefully more games, native or otherwise

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title) - Nothing wrong with ports, a Call of Duty port would be most welcome. Would love to see more games of the genre that made Amiga famous though, i.e. Native versions which are original in terms of gameplay, plot etc.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title? - Not more than a standard PC or XBox game, preferably cheaper.

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?). - Software of all kinds, especially great games with excellent 3D gfx, orginal gameplay, and of a quality equal to PC gaming stature.

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse) - Can't see any reason why not. But I would be somewhat sceptical.
