1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?

Sure, and it will be even better (more potential & ideas to be expressed via the new harware).
The ideal would be to have such a software that can attract other people to buy the h/w (just like what happened with the A500 -and I'm not speaking for cutting edge h/w since everything is more or less standard, but attractive s/w: that's what made Amiga a winner over Archimedes- )

Quote:

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

To be used only for old kind of platforms/arcade games (like the UAE ones), or for some compatibility issues with older h/w (nice to see 68K & PPC bins of certain utils on AmiNet).

Quote:

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

Sure, that's what I'm waiting for!

Quote:

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

Popular game ports, and some innovating Amiga-only games maybe...

Quote:

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)

I'd prefer a new one, but I know that isn't an easy task. With a new OS and tools I think that should be easier to be "creative".

Quote:

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

An Amiga-only game should be 15-20% over the normal shelf PC-games (to be bought easyly and quickly).

Quote:

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

I always did .
Seriously, the "other side" should consider the Amiga as a competitor -in the market-, and what makes the money go round is the s/w: you get a computer once, but you have to buy more games/apps.

Quote:

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)

Depends on the OS4 copies sold... I think for a good start you buy a couple of titles just to test the system!

Initially, the market will - as everyone else has stated - be small; probably insufficient to entice all our favourite historic developers (Team 17, Psygnosis, etc.)
The market will only then grow if there are killer applications or games, which will only appear if the hardware is sold in large numbers. Vicious circle!
Back bedroom coders, and existing supporters (Hyperion, Nova Design, etc.) must get products to the market as soon as OS4 is available, and the products must be something special!

Quote:
2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

Absolutely - as a platform for using AOS4 (or 3.x) and the applications for them.
It may, however, come back into its own once DE is up and running properly, as its a small, low power, low heat, low sound, low profile solution that is probably powerful enough for many hand-held solutions.

Quote:
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

I haven't bought anything that's 68k only (except retro nostalgia games!) ever since I've owned a Blizzard PPC.
Once I've got an AmigaOne/OS4, I don't expect to even see software that supports the 68k

Quote:
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

Fun, widely-appealing software that can be played with multiple people around one TV, as well as across a network.
SWOS, Speedball 2, Stunt Car Racer, Alien Breed 3D, Superfrog, etc. all re-made for the new platform.
Perhaps a new Amiga-only character/mascot would help us along?

Quote:
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)

Tricky! I'd love to see ports of the big PC (and console!) hits - especially if the game is still being played online (e.g. some of the top FPS, or simulations, or RPGs) so that the awareness of the platform is spread - and people don't have to resort to a PC platform to play their favourite games.
New ideas are also extremely important - but how about looking way back to the 8-bit era, and re-making some of the real classics? Appeal to the nostalgic mid-30 age group, who usually have a significant disposable income...

Quote:
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Hmm - a port should probably command a premium to cover the conversion work, although it's likely that the cost of PC/console games has already been met by the original sales, and thus could be offered slightly cheaper.
Ideally, however, I'd like there to be no difference in price between a port and a new game - providing the software makes use of the hardware available to it (unlike a lot of the old CD32 ports, which were just a floppy disk copied onto the CD...)

Quote:
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

Killer applications that make the computer widely regarded and respected (e.g. if you could point to a TV program and say "That was done on an Amiga like mine" or "I could do that on my Amiga - look: ").

Catchy advertisements - the Honda ones are a good example (The cog one, and the "Isn't it nice when things just work") as is the Mac G5 blast-through-walls.

If there was a game that I could run that allowed multiple players around one screen, multiple online players, and is easy to pick up and play almost irrespective of age range...

Finally, if the computer works easily, intuitively, securely, doesn't crash or do strange unpredictable things, and lets me do what I want, when I want, how I want...!

Quote:
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)

Yes - but it must be something special that shows off the hardware.
There must be a large support/update community, and it must appeal to a wide audience.
Multiplayer online SWOS or Cannon Fodder, anyone?

1) Definitely - I would certainly envisage a good few thousand users
once OS 4 is released with
room to expand as the OS development program continues.
2) 68k is "classic" in the nicest sense - it was good for its time but is no longer enough to drive the market forward.

3) I will ONLY be buying software that works natively on PPC.

4) I would expect the release of OS 4 to more or less coincide with a few popular ports (from Hyperion etc) and improve from there.

5) Ideally I would like to see a limited number of top line PC ports coupled with native games that take new directions on what the PC has done or plough a new direction :) PC ports such as NWN, Morrowind, Deus Ex etc would be fantastic though most
likely difficult to realise due to
licensing fees. I remain optimistic for the long run though and expect to see native games that jostle with PC titles in terms of quality. Graphics aren't the be all and end all it is true - but we now have the hardware to move away from the ret
ro plus a few ports scene. 6) In theory pretty much the same (provided the quality of the gaming experience was in the same league) - in practice I might well pay that little extra for a good native effort. 7) Well I'm cert
ainly in the minority of a minority here being a new convert whose first proper hands on experience with AmigaOS will be on an AmigaOne with OS 4 - so I can't say I did any screaming in the past :) Some quality games, a port
of Mozilla and the pleasure of using a OS/GUI that doesn't fight you every step of the way will be enough to get me singing Amiga's praises ! :)

8) Personally I think so - I would be extremely surprised if several games were not purchased by most new AmigaOne/OS 4 owners thus making this target attainable for a quality product.

Best Regards
JohnB

1. Yep, but verry small to begin with.

2. 68k is definitely dead as far as the desktop is concerned.

3. Yes I would not bother with anything that is tied to the past.

4. Once the market is big enough, it would be nice to see A1/Os4 exclusive titles released with a few quality console ports. but i can wait for the games. in the meantime i have my console.

5. A new exclusive game would be preferable.

6. If the game isjust as good as the original, then full price but if it has new features added such as improved graphics, game modes, maps etc.. then i would pay more.

7. If OS4 is stable, fast allows me to play all my music and films, surf the web, use the odd aplication and generally remove all the frustration i have with mickysoft OSes then i will be shouting amiga rules.

8. like many i think 500, but i have a sneaky feeling there are more amigans out there than we realise waiting to rejoin the customer base.

Certainly. I can not say how big the market will be though.

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.
I do not think the 68k is going away but there is no real future for it. It is just to slow.
Quote:
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?
Yes. My goal is to use the PPC chip in my A1.
Quote:
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?
Hmm, what I want to see and what I expect to see are two different things. I like RPG's more than anything else but I expect I will see ports of less desirable games and jump and runs. I might actually buy a port or two but depends on the port.
Quote:
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)
New fresh games are better. I do understand that we need a market to support new games and thats the largest reason I might buy a port or two. Much the same reason I bought an A1 at this point - support for the platform.
Quote:
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?
30 US dollers for a port. 50-60 US dollers for a fresh new RPG.
Quote:
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).
A larger market with modern day software support.
Quote:
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)
My gut reaction says no. But it depends on the game. If it is interesting enough then yes. But everyone has different tastes. Make a jump and run and I will pass. Make a good RPG and others may pass.

1. I do not know. I hope so.
2. 68k is dead.
3. Yes.
4. I'm not a gamer.
5. See 4.
6. See 4.
7. I never stopped.

1) Yes, but a tiny one at first, then slowly growing.

2) No, I don't think the 68k has much of a future, not for ports anyway.

3) Indeed, I already committed to Pagestream for OS4. It's crucial to show the vendors that there's a market here.

4) Mostly ports, but there might come some nifty original games, who knows? I hope that all development hasn't stopped..

5) port or not doesn't matter much, it's the IDEA and game play that counts. if I got to choose from two equally good games, I'd still take an Amiga original.

6) I think the top is reached with 50-70 eur.. even that is a bit tight, I think. The lower the price, the more sales you're guaranteed to get. that's my opinion, atleast.

7) Hmm.. look at the classic applications, give me new ones like that.. hollywood is a good example, it's one step on the way.

8) 1000 copies isn't *that* much.. and people are bound to want software for their nice new machines, so it's not impossible imho :)

1. Sure there will but small to begin with. I belive it will start to grow once AOS 4 is released though, only slowly.

2. I think the 68k is more or less dead.

3. YES! Everything that I can afford and need.

4. Good quality games. I actually enjoyed playing Quake 2 a lot allthough it's an old game.

5. An new invention is good IF it is a good game, like Payback. That will make the Amiga special and draw new users. However I don't mind ports either a long as they're good games that I enjoy.

6. It depends. Nightlong was overpriced in my opinion. I wanted that game but I never baught it because of that. Still I would pay more for a good Amiga Only title.

7. Well the scream has been a little lowder everytime a new version of AOS has been released. Still nothing will be like AOS 4 so I guess that will match my scream from 1987 when I got my A500

8. I really hope so but it depends on many things so it's hard to answer that question. I know that I will buy pretty much anything that is released, as long as it isn't something silly like a 24-bit Yatzy-game for 60$

I'm using 1.3.3, so not even I am a potential customer. Don't know. (BUT, I expect to be using an Amiga AGA emulator on my A1 (when I get it).)

YES.

Quote:
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?
RPGs, 2D side scrolling games (Shadow of the Beast IV), puzzle, adventure (King's Quest, Space Quest), turn based Civilization like games (space, (control solar system, galaxy), world war), and I REALLY would love to see some kind of mmorpg. (Just MAYBE there a few AWers I'd like to kick butt on (JUST KIDDDING!!!!!! ))

From scratch, RPG, 2D side scroller .... (see 4)

Quote:

Ported $35, fresh $60 (Can.).

Quote:

Game boots off CD (small file on HD, made on first usage, can set machine up to run properly with the game you use), can be installed on HD, B U T, it makes sense, and can be installed manually, BUT (this is bigger)
if it checks how much RAM you have, and loads into it!!!!
So that I don't have to do it!
Not many games did this, but remember Lemmings used to, if you had enough ram, keep every level completed in ram, in case you had to start back at the first level. (I will put 2 gigs in my machine, ONE if...then statement is all you need! (Okay, a few.))

Quote:

Yes, yes, yes I do.

AmigaOne! AOS4.0! Games sell computers, so lets buy some games.

1. Yes, i do. Not a big one, but it should be enough to sustain some developments.
2. As for new 68k stuff, it is dead. Retro stuff will probably remain cool tough.
3. Yes, i will buy PPC software. Both apps and games.
4. I expect some ports, mainly from Hyperion.
5. I would not mind a port of a PC hit, but the problem with them are that they are usually old and i am sure a well made Amiga game would sell better within the community than a port would.
6. 400 SEK is the limit i have placed on standard PC games, perhaps 450-500 SEK for an amiga port. As for a pure Amiga games title (a good one) i would be willing to stretch to 750 SEK.
8. In the game world that would be a mix between homeworld and elite. Large space and hyperspace jumps, neat gfx, trading and combat and played online with fellow amigans, just sweet.
8. Depends on the title really, but sure.

@Toaks

1. Yes. It will probably be quite small to begin with, but if there are ppl who make apps and games that are good, then the market will grow.

2. 68k just can't supply the kind of power required these days. I think there is more chance of Coldfire having a desktop market than 68k TBH.

3. I will buy ANYTHING for OS4 that I can afford. Period.

4. I would like to see games like "The Settlers", "Lemmings", "Homeworld 2", "Empires", "Darkseed" and "Monkey Island". Puzzle / Strategy mainly.

5. Ideally if the Amiga wants to get a foothold in a big market, they need to have something other platforms don't. Ports are not as useful in getting new ppl into the market, as they could have the same elsewhere. However, ports are good things for those that are already in the market, because they keep them there. Both are highly useful in their own right, but we need the 'killer app' or 'unique game' more ATM.

6. For a ported game, probably about 75-120% depending on the original cost, any advantages that may be had (extra features, level editors, etc.) for owning an Amiga copy, and the 'lure' of the game itself.

7. My PC owning friends would tell you that I have never really stopped - Windows certainly gives you enough opertunities, even today.

8. If OS4 comes out before June, then there is a (small) chance. If I thought enough of the app I might buy two copies if I knew I would be supporting an Amiga developer.

I don't think a new game of sufficent quality can be produced/released beore 2005, and even if so, I doubt there are 1000 amigans attracted by a specific (or any) game(category) to reach 1000 copies sold. 1) Yes, I certainly hope so. I will probably spend a fair amount of $ on new Amiga software / games as they come out anyway if even for nothing more then to do my part to help try to revitalize the market.

2) 68k is dead and should not even be considered for development going forward.

3) Yes.

4) Something which starts on the Amiga, even if it's a revitalized and updated classic. I'd be happy with something like Speedball 2k5, or Turrican 2k5 etc..

5) I would prefer original, but ports are ok too.

6) I would pay $40-$50 U.S. for a port and up to $60 for an great original.

7) Hmm. Tough one. How about I would scream Amiga rules when I can play a multiplayer-internet FPS game on my Amiga against PC/MAC users without getting my arse kicked because their framerate moves at 10x the speed of mine!

8) If everyone who buys an AmigaONE commits to buying a few games or other pieces of software, yes. If the minimum spec of the game met a PPC 160mhz even probably even more likely so.

Ok get your arse coding Toaks! BTW, is your Amiga fixed yet?

No. I don't think a port that most people already have on their PC's will sell 1000 ex. I don't think a new game of sufficent quality can be produced/released beore 2005, and even if so, I doubt there are 1000 amigans attracted by a specific (or any) game(category) to reach 1000 copies sold. But I hope I'm wrong...

I'm sure a PPC version of Babeanoid would sell more than 1000 copies! Easily

@Toaks

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?

Lets hope so, otherwise why would Hyperion take on the task?

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

No 68k should be left to be a memory now!

3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?

Absolutely, can't wait for more apps/games to appear on the horizon.

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

I would expect ports of decent PC games first, then hopefully "Amiga" titles appearing when (hopefully) more coders take the mantle!

5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)

Both! Would mostly like to see a port of a flight sim or something different from 1st person shoot ups for a change.

6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Quite happy to lay out £30 or so for anything worth playing on my AmigaOne.

7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

Anything that was good, fast and not bloatware.

8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)

Thats a tough one isn't it, from what Alan said there have been around 1000 AmigaOnes sold to date (pre OS4 release). How many of those to date are gamers who knows. Lets see how many AmigaOnes sell when OS4 is released before we can speculate what software sales will be like!

Without a doubt, and it will grow, the only question is by how much.

Yes.

That is all I will buy.

Full colour full speed isometric, first person perspective 3d and 2d scrolling games the way we always wanted them to look and feel. Strategy to arcade.

We need a mix. I would prefer new ideas or older ideas brought up to date. A few ports would be good, but mostly for online gaming - advertising through clans.

Port? Less than a fresh Amiga Only title.

Something that makes me say "Damn, thats an Amiga game, and look at the ####er go!"

Yes, given that condition. It would have to be a good game though as I think initially the market will not grow beyond 3k units in 2k4, and beyond that depends on what hardware is released, the takeup, how much positive noise we can make and how much fun it looks like we are all having.

Dave.

@Toaks (hadn't seen this before now)

Seeing that the MorphOs sees new/updated/ported software appear for it at least moderately regularly, I see no reason why AOS4 will not inspire an even bigger production. If that "market" is economically viable for professional developers is another question alltogether though. I can only say "I hope".

No, I don't think it has any future. I for one knows I will not go back to use my classic hardware after the switch to PPC is over and AOS4 is out. I will use the non-ported stuff under 68k emulation and maybe play a game on the A1200 from time to time. But I will try to replace old stuff with equivalent PPC versions as soon as I can. I feel no sentimentality towards 68k just because it's "68k". 68k software is already a dead-end market and will soon become even more dead, in my opinion.

Yes I will. Not that I will boycott mixed 68k/PPC programs mind you. But if I was given a choice I wouldn't pay extra for classic-compatability.

What I would WANT to see on the AmigaOS4 gaming platform are original natively developed games that focus more on excellent control/gameplay and great story-telling rather than flashy graphics (Ok, what I would really want would be for those games to have breathtaking graphics too.) Games that makes the Amiga stand out again.

What I EXPECT however is ports of older games from other platforms and a few original smaller production games from bedroom coders. At the maximum one original, Amiga-produced professional-quality game a year. Eventually this may change. But realistically this is how I see the future for quite some time to come. Small steps.

Despite what I just said in the question above, I would prefer a mix, at least in the interim. It takes so long time to develop an original game that those would be far apart indeed (as I said, a professional caliber original game would be come about once a year maximum, IMO). So good-quality ports are needed too. Regardless of what one may think of the x86 platforms, there are a lot of very - objectively - good games out there. Games are games. And no matter if they are ports or not, all programs released mean an influx of money into the market that is Amiga.Sure, I too would prefer all games to be ported from Amiga not to it. But I'm a realist.

That would have to depend on the title. I would probably be willing to pay more for a native title. But not much. Given that ported (less expensive to develop? I don't know, but I suspect they are, compared to a title developed from scratch) games today are already some four to six times more expensive for Amiga than the (by the time the Amiga version is released) low budget PC version, there is not much leeway for the original title if you want to leave any buying incentive at all.

I already do; to the great amusement of my peers.

I must admit I'm sceptical. But then I'm having difficulties getting a proper estimate of the size of the Amiga community. My impression is that slightly more than 1000 people have bought an AmigaOne. Even if we are optimistic and say that a total of 3000 users will sit with AOS4 +AmigaOne once the OS is released, I'd say it's overly optimistic to think a third of them will buy a certain game. I'd say that's unrealistic in any community. Given the (lack of) inertia in this community, I'd say it's close to impossible. Perhaps later on, but not in 2004.

I would likely buy it though.
