1 Yes
2 Yes (it has no future, way to slow for more modern types of software, unless you want more text editors )
3 Yes
4 New 3D games (racing and flight sims with more realism)
5 Dont mind so long it plays well
6 Ported game (a good one that is) £30, original A1 (again its got to be good) £35
7 Having something to show others (other than Linux or a basic OS4 with no apps to take advantage of the new power available)
8 I doubt it (being realistic), but I would hope more people will by A1s when we have OS4, so you never know till then.

Yes, though it be small.

I think there will be a small market for everything Amiga.

YES. I would liike Open Office or similar on the Amiga. I would pay hundreds of dollers to able to do business with my A1. Thousonds if the programs are good enough. Something like Quickbooks Pro would be very welcome.

4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?

I would like to see adventure games. RPG types.

I would prefer a new game from scratch but I would buy a port if I liked it.
Quote:
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

The amount is not determined on whethere or not its a port. I think a good game can be worth $50 US. I would prefer to pay more like $30 US but I do understand the creator/porter has to eat.

I am still screaming it! Get me some business software so I can show it to my employees. They think I cam cracked where computers are concerned.

If there can be 1000 Amiga Club members then you bet a good program can sell 1000 copies. Unfortunately, games have a better chance of selling that kind of number but I am hoping some business software will come around.

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?
Yes, but a small one at least at the start.
2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.
Yes and no. Commercial and some of the non-commercial software will no doubt be PPC specific, but I think that there will also be a number of "bedroom" programmers still tinkering away with 68K projects.
Ultimately though, PPC is the way forward and unless we see the software coming out for it (and enough people buying it) the Amiga will fail as a mainstream computing platform.
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?
Of course!
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?
I would like to see games being of the highest quality in terms of originality and playability. It was this that made the Amiga such a great gaming platform in the 80s and early 90s.
I don't know about anyone else, but these days I find the selection of games in the shops for the PC, PS2 or whatever just all variations on a theme with little or no originality in them. In short, there is little out there which would make me go "I've got to have that game!".
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)
I think both are important. New games and original ideas are important to distinguish the Amiga from the rest of the herd. Games (ideally the latest ones) ported from other platforms will at the very least let those with PS2s and PCs see that the Amiga is a viable games platform that can play the same titles as well as any other platform (or better ).
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?
It would depend on what the game was, but somewhere in the region of £20-£40 (same as most new PC titles really).
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).
How says I still don't?
Amigas will need to start appearing in high street shops and have a presence in the media (TV adverts and their own magazines on newsagents' shelves). I also feel that a big step forward will be when companies like nVidia, ATI, etc. start supporting Amiga by developing their own drivers for their latest products rather than relying on third party drivers which may or may not appear.
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)
No, I'm afraid I'm not that optimistic. Maybe by the end of 2005 perhaps?
Kind regards,
Francis. _________________

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?
I think there will be a small one with a user base of about 3000 initially.
2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.
Yes, none.
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?
Amiga speaking, yes.
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?
Mostly FPS clones and a few ports to start with.
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)
I would like to see a few ports like UT, UT2004 and other genre's plus some new original games. The A1 won't be able to compete in terms of polygon pushing so it gives the programmer more of an excuse to concentrate on gameplay. I would like to see an A1 game become known in the mainstream simply because it is innotive, original and fun. Something the mainstream PC, PS2, XBOX brigade developers have forgotten about.
The big software houses tend to copy everyone else as they are too scared financially to experiment with something new. The A1 programmer would not have the same restriction of men in suits dictating gameplay and such.
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?
The same (£35).
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).
1. It was sold in main retail outlets. 2. It had PS3 performance. 3. It had dozens of Amiga magazines.
This of course won't happen. I would settle for a user base of 50,000 which I think is do-able. I have had platforms with a user base as small as that, and that did not stop it of having some great games.
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)
If the Micro A1 and OS4 comes out by early summer. _________________

Does that include the occasional MacOS X** (PowerPC) user? **Sheep PPC emulated and/or Apple's HW boxes.
> 1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released? Hardware cost that runs AmigaOS 4.0 could be an issue.
>2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps. Well, 68K could be use as a virtual processor?
>3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ? After procurement of AOS4/PPC hardware for specfic AOS4.0 titles.
>4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4? I rather see MONO .NET framework to be ported on AOS4.0 i.e. I'm not interested in ?yet another? Linux/MONO .NET setup since one could obtain relatively cheap and cool running (Athlon XP-M/Pentium M) Lintel based solutions.
>5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from >scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title) New invention.

Note that Warcraft 3 runs reasonably fine on G4 @1Ghz PowerMac/Geforce4MX i.e. it only needs 400Mhz PowerPC CPU and 16MB NVIDIA/ATI graphics card. MicroA1 or A1-XE +G3@800/ATI7500/AOS4.0 wouldn't have any problems running such titles.
Nintendo Game Cube titles ports would be welcome addition i.e. Micro-A1/G3@600Mhz/ATI-Radeon7500/128MB RAM should be able to beat Nintendo's Game Cube with ease. _________________

Note that Windows NT doesn't apply memory protection for video drivers i.e. IF your ATI driver has "issues" then Windows NT would not shield you from BSOD.
Refer to MS Windows XP Media Center?s certified based solutions. I wouldn?t comment on your ATI 8500DV but I have successfully built MCE style PCs from Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 and Albatron Geforce FX 5x00 (e.g. 5900 PV) VIVO. _________________

1. do "YOU" think there will be an market once os4 is released?
a very small one
2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.
I think they do have a future in the form of a 68K PDA. But even in Classic Amigas if they were continualy upgraded down the 68k path (68090 anyone?) Personally I would definitely buy 68K apps, like a new version of SCALA, or Brilliance........or a new Lightwave................any new games like a version of Tomb Raider for 68K or Resident Evil............Jak and Daxter (it all has to be 68K with NO RTG required...........but can support it if available). I gaurantee you, that if someone created a 68K handheld Amiga PDA, that was fully CD32, AGA, ECS compatible, and had MP3 and DivX that at least 80% of Amiga users would buy it and support it.
3. Will "YOU" buy new software which will be ONLY for PPC ?
If I considered the A1 to be a REAL Amiga, then Yes..............but since I don't, No
4. What do "YOU" expect to see on the gameing front on a1 with os4?
Pure crap! as usual
5. Would "YOU" prefer an PORT of an PC HIT? or an New invention(?) (a game from scratch , new ideas and a non hyped title)
I prefer a PORT of a PC HIT, but only if it was much improved over the PC version...............only so I can feel good about it, and tell my PC owning friends "As you can See, Amiga still RULES!"
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?
I would pay up t $40.00 for a ported game if it was a PORT of a Brand new game and was enhanced for Amiga................If the Amiga Only Title was something special that no PC or X-Box has ever seen, then I would pay up to $40.00 also.
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).
NOTHING! unless it was a consistent BOMBARDMENT of continuous excellent applications that would make saying "AMIGA ROOLZ" a worthy and Justified saying
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)
Absolutley NOT, there are no New Young Amigans or Teenagers that have invested in, or even know what an Amiga ONE is! unless your like me, who even though I am a full grown man, I still play Amiga games, simply to Try to justify the past.of what could have been!

If your only reason for playing old games is an attempt at justifying some previous action, you have a problem. I haven't played ANY games lately, but when it comes to platform games, the old Amiga classics are still THE best. In NO way am I playing Amiga games if I don't really enjoy it

I honestly don't know. Because this is one of them self-fulfilling-prophecy kinda situation. By that, I mean that if enough people in the community predict the death of our beloved platform, it will die. Because once a person has predicted something, he will (even if only on a subconcius(sp?) level) start looking for ways to make it so. I seriously WANT to see a market, so I will do what I can to make it reality. First step: buy the OS4 version of PageStream.

2. Do "YOU" think 68k has no future for new games/apps.

Depends on the game/app, doesn't it? If you create something that looks at LEAST as good as SuperFrog/insert-game-title-with-excellent-graphics-here and plays well, then I see no reason why it couldn't sell a few copies. The trick would be to write in C so you could release for ALL derivative platforms once you're ready.
But the 68k is much more useful for nostalgia these days

I prefer a good game. I don't care whether or not it is new or old, if it is good fun and I'm not fed up with it, I don't mind if it's a port of an older PC game. For reference, this year I bought Diablo II + the Lord of Destruction expansion. Old, but still one of the very best, because of the huge community (100000 players online at all times isn't BAD, you know ) Quote:
6. How Much would "YOU" pay for an Ported game compared to an fresh Amiga Only title?

Impossible to answer directly. I expect to pay the same for a ported game as I pay for the original release. If Diablo II for PC and Mac costs me 150NOK, I don't expect to pay 350NOK for an Amiga port. Some overhead is ok, because it would mean one less reason to boot into Windows Lets say 200NOK unless there is added value in there somewhere. Fresh Amiga Only title? Depends on the game. Again, I think you will need to compete with similar games on the PC, unfortunately. But hardly ANY game EVER has been worth more than 400NOK. Multiplayer game, internet based: Start high, work yourself down over a period of about two years. It sucks to be the last person on the planet playing some online game If it's a single player game: Start a bit lower, don't start dropping the price until you a: have scraped in what you needed to make ends meet (cost of producing, including wages) or b: see that you're never going to reach that goal anyway.
Set up a system where it's possible to purchase older releases through your website (secure download thingie). It Truly Sucks (tm) not to be able to buy some game you missed out on just because there's not going to be another production run of the CD. Quote:
7. What would make "YOU" scream AMIGA ROOLZ again? , like you did in the past(?).

I still do Seriously, though: I use Linux for 100% of all my work, the only reason I keep Windows around is for games (aka Wintendo). If I could migrate that last bit over to AmigaOS, I can actually start thinking about removing Windows from my setup. Quote:
8. Do "YOU" think an Amiga One Game can pass 1000 copies sold By the End 2004 (IF we have OS4 Before the End Of the Year ofcourse)
|
Do you mean OS4 game or AmigaOne game? I think a couple of hundred CSPPC and BPPC would help in reaching that goal, so assuming a game that can scale down CPU and graphics requirements to AT LEAST run on CSPPC, my answer is: Yes. Iff (if and only if) the game is of sufficient quality for its price point, AND it is something that all Amigans can relate to (some don't like 1PS, some don't like soccer games, some don't like adventures, etc), AND it and OS4 is released FAIRLY soon. OS4 _well_ before the summer and the game is out at least 2-3 months before christmas, you have a CHANCE. But don't put all your eggs in one basket. Say something like: At 300 this year, we break even, at 500 we can fund a sequel/expansion (something that only needs bugfixes and whatever extra functionality that can be added without a major rewrite, some new graphics/sound, some new levels/missions etc and costs about 1/2 the price of the original if it's an expansion and about the same if it's a sequel), at 800 we can halve the development of our next title and so on. You set the numbers, you decide whether to go public with them, and you see
Any game which consists of an engine, plus a mission/level/PC/NPC/object editor (be it RPG, 1PS or whatever) where people can create mods for release and/or inclusion into a sequel/expansion will automatically have increased life span and has a hope of selling VERY well over a time period of 2-3 years, even with a moderate price drop over time. Therefore it might not be very smart to focus on quick sales. If it's an original title, the possibility to make a port to other systems is also important, and if it's possible for external companies to license the engine to sell derivatives might be a good idea. Or maybe let them create a really good mod and distribute it for them at a cost.
This is of course just SOME of my ideas on a Monday morning, feel free to contact me for more later in the week Quote:

1. Yes, but as others have said how big is a different matter.
2. No future really.
3. Yes definately
4. I expect to see a lot of FPS ports, I would like to see some RPG's, platformers etc.
5. It depends on the game , not whether its a port really (ie i'd take an RPG over an FPS be they port or new).
6. Depends on the game, I wouldnt want to pay much more than the standard PC/PS2 game price no matter if its a port or a new game. (so say £30-£40).
7. Dunno really, its a computer....
8. Depends on the game, if you come up with some thing original that appeals to a wide audience (much like lemmings did) then maybe, it also depends when the game is released and when OS4 is released as well of course.

| hello , nice to see this thread woke up again and just to make it clear , this is an AMIGA site so all i discuss here is about AMIGA , hence its not MACOS or linux.
to the guys who get upset over others comments , dont respond to anyone as this is an OPINION poll , i want opinions on what people think here and not what theyre forced to say.
also if you want to respond to someone else's post then do it in another thread because i want it as clean as possible and as readable as possible and its not a joke poll.
to everyone who wondered about my Amiga , no Sorry my ppc is not arrived yet , it was sent back a few days ago and i am still waiting for it.

umm i dont know why u posted this but ok i will answer em quick.
(as an developer in the market)

Yes , but an amiga game budget is low and new creations cost ALOT of money and most of all innovation and creation of new things is something other consoles/computer markets wont allow unless its bullet proof!
Also , supporting bppc/csppc will degrade the total of the game making it only half of the real potential.

| 1. I am pessimistic so I say NO even if I would really love there is one and I even bought an amigaone/linux box
2. No future for 68k. I own 2 A1200s but do not know really until when they will last.
3. Yes I will if there is something released and worth the money (gorky17 looks good), bought Quake2, Heretic2, Freespace and Majesty (linuxppc)
4. 68k games are simply the best which show that a game does not only consist in 3D. I do not have a pc nor a console at home (I am 100% and truely amiga only) so I am not up to date with all these new games. Do not know exactly what i am waiting for maybe something different. I was a true strike commander fan, used to play to a friends house having a pc and I like the idea of playing a kind of simulation with a bit a management and adventure. Indy3 is also a good example : adventure with some arcade/action phases just so that you are not getting bored with point and click.
5. Well as I said I do not really know the latests games around but gorky17 looks good so I am probably here for pc ports but really original games would be better as others plateforms may want to play these and buy amigaones.
6. A port should be less than 30euros since you could get the pc version for 3 euros. A real new and innovative game : well I say more than 30 euros but less than 50.
7. Do things people do on the pc : browsing, file sharing, printing, word processing. well i do it on the amiga but with much more pain than people do on pc or mac.
8. NO because we are all different so if there is only 1000 amigaones sold I dont think you can sell 1000 copies of a RPG clone.
Thanks for reading Lio

| 1. Don't know. If yes, very small. Growth of this market will, INMHO, depend of the "WOW!(tm)" effect... People like me (not primarily interested in gaming) will come back to Amiga IF there's the minimal "productivity" package available, the 1200's Magic Pack is quite sufficient to do that (OpenOffice is not welcomed on my future hardrive, but (ex) Digita's products or other 'light' solutions are welcome, if refreshed a bit !)
2. 68k = dead...
3. I will primarily buy software designed (and optimised) for PPC !
4. I'm not a gamer at all ! In fact, i was playing a lot on my A500 and A1200 (Lemmings, Turrican 2, SOTB, platform games and shoot'em up), but 3D worlds of the todays PC games don't interst me at all ! What i expect is see suite of great Amiga title, refreshed with today hardware potential and technologie. My favorite games are platform and shoot'em up. See also my post in this thread.
5. New invention... Refer also to 4.
6. Ported games don't interest me, but i think that a port would be cheaper than a scratch development ! 55EUR is the max that i accept to pay for a game, if it's a good game.
7. Ehrm... Please come back on earth... What would make me sceam "Amiga is Fantastic" would be simple yet powerfull apps and beautiful/artistic/original games. I often make a parallel of the PC art (photoshop and it's filters, photoretouching capabilities), and the Amiga art (hand made graphics like saw in demos). I prefer the second !
8. If the game is very good, and i mean VERY GOOD, then it might ! But really, i don't know the real state of the Amiga market of today to project it in the near future. |
