Unexpected good news. Maybe there's a future after all. Congratulations to Hyperion and good luck on future products. More hardware... can't beleive I'm actually saying that.

One confusing point for me though... Hyperion owns AOS4 but only has a license to for AOS3.1? I wonder how that all exactly works out in legal terms? Will A.I. still get a fee for each copy sold or some thing like that?

About bloody time. Well done Hyperion.

Is this agreement going to open up the possibility of cheaper, better hardware?

The current platforms that Amiga OS runs on are prohibitively expensive, underpowered (for the price) and definitely holding back development.

I'm a software engineer with over 10 years experience, and I'd love to get back into the Amiga again, I might even write some new software for it, but there's no way that's going to happen on the current list of over-priced and underpowered hardware.

No offence intended to anybody whose perfectly happy with their current set up, but I've been out of the Amiga game for long enough to have a different perspective on the current situation.

Cheers,
Gaz.

@GazSP
The general consensus is that, Yes this is a development that could lead to new HW too.

I would be content with "powerful" for now though, as "inexpensive" does not match well with Powerful in a niche market like this (it works for mainstream, but alas, we are not mainstream anymore).

Amiga inc has no money to pay for lawyers, no money to pay for taxes, ..

That is exactly the reason why Amiga Inc. could not gave away the AOS4.1 rights for free. But selling Amiga IP was exactly the business Amiga Inc. wanted to do ... so we will see if Hyperion will survive this victory ( of Amiga Inc. ?) long enough for an AOS4.2 ... they are not a VOF any more, so bankruptcy could just mean a new beginning.

Remember that the last time they had Pentti for that new beginning otherwise they would be dead meat by now. Today they are broke and alone...

I very much doubt that Amiga Inc wants to have *anything* to do with OS4 anymore. That means no OS4 hardware from them.

You are probably right!
To determine the most certainly have to read the agreement first.

Quote:

If AI still hopes to be a viable business (I have strong doubts) then they need to concentrate on whatever sellable products they have. That means AA2 or bust.

If Amiga Inc. has money or not is crucial for the future. If they have money so it is unlikely that they leave the AmigaOS without having anything else. I think so, because they are imminent, to show a product that they think are stronger in a broader market than AmigaOS. I guessed before, and not entirely without longer need, on a new OS with a name skillt from AmigaOS, why not "Workbench"?

If they do not have money, it may be, as I said earlier, they save AmigaOS by allowing Hyperion have all rights and then dissolve the business.

If the latter is true, then perhaps it is also included in the agreement that corporate actors named "Amiga" released for Hyperion.

But as Jamie said contradicts the last two paragraphs.

Soon we may know!

Given that today's "Current openings" at Amiga Developments India are exactly the same as the "Current openings" back in November 2006, I would say it's either a shell company (OMG NO WAY!), or they have a real recruitment problem!

I called them once and the guy on the other end did not seem to know who I was asking for at first when I asked "is this Amiga Development India" or something like that. May have been a language barrier thing, but I don't think so.

One could speculate (and you know how much people hate to do THAT)...
An amount in excess of what AI needed to clear up their case with their landlord.

I don't even think they would have needed to pay that much, in fact probably nothing at all, after all AInc would need to have a significant amount of money to be able to go through with the lawsuits they started, so they probably just didn't have a choice but come to an agreement, to be able to keep what little they have left.

Any new line of "AmigaONE" machines that Hyperion chooses to support,
could be just about anything. Personally whatever they do support
next I hope it will be powerful, reasonably priced and easily
available worldwide.

So please, Hyperion - go and support this beast ASAP - at least one core initially!

@Hyperionmp

Thanks for the updates on this thread.

As the legal issues fade to black, I believe you must work hard to provide an image of stability, consistency and most of all, sanity.

This will help alleviate many fears that have held back commitments, both on the part of developers (hardware and software) and end-users.

Now is the time to start presenting some leadership, direction and purpose. The market needs a boost and the ball is in your court.

No pressure or anything...

Wow, great news!! Looks like Hyperion's bullish tactics of releasing OS4.1 on the Sam paid off. They always treated Amiga Inc (KMOS) like a completely new company from 'Amiga Inc- Washington State' (which they were) and in the end they have been victorious and with a settlement rather than a legal fight to the death like we all expected!
