Screenshots look nice, but seem to confirm my fears that Firefox is a HUGE resource hog.
Look at the CPU meter in the dock, its pretty much pushing 100% cpu usage on all the shots and the graph is pure colour. |
That is because it is outputting about half a million lines of debug code (well, not quite but a lot) to the serial port. Also, a lot of areas need optimizations, for example when scrolling it will always redraw everything instead of scrolling the data and then redrawing only the part that got revealed.
Since rebuilding Firefox takes ages, we haven't done a non-debug version yet,
@Tuxedo Quote:
It actually is. There are mostly three serious issues remaining: * Local file access in some areas doesn't work (i.e. no bookmarks saving), It can access files in its PROGDIR: but not outside * Crashes. There are some crashes left, we'll have to find those. * Optimization: Right now, we're using plain vanilla image surfaces, mostly because we hadn't figured out how the image optimization works (it used to bomb when using hw accelerated surfaces). Since we have found out how that works now, we will try putting hardware acceleration in, which should certainly make a difference. But having said that, even a software only version is quite useable already in spite of the tons of debug output.
We are hoping to get an alpha or early beta out by the end of the year, maybe a bit earlier if progress continues like it does currently.

| @Fab and pecosbil Wanna bet Gnash is going to get integrated in Timberwolf? Did you read the Gnash bounty terms? The "Browser plug-in" is part of the bounty ie:no plug in, no money! (stop party pooping for no reason please...).

Of course Gnash plugin for firefox may be done, especially if it isn't done for OWB. But the point is it has nothing to do with firefox itself (except it has to implement plugin system, obviously). So, that claim that Timberwolf will bring Flash is just bogus. Flash plugin is a separate task, period. Last edited by Fab on 24-Nov-2009 at 12:09 AM.

| @Fab We are both right...
In a general "abstract" sense you are right, saying porting FF (to any platform) has nothing to do with Flash, is quite correct (as one is made by mozilla and the other is a different development by Adobe former Macromedia).
But in this specific "practical" case they are very much connected: Gnash port bounty needed a different browser in order to be completed, as the plug in was mandatory and OS4 OWB port did not allow it. That new browser IS Timberwolf so there is a direct correlation between these two major OS4 developments as one will allow the other to be completed (they mingle a lot at many different levels ).
What Pecosbil said was misleading to the causal forumer that doesn't know better. People here is not interested in pis*ing contests and needless nitpicking, all they want to know is if they will be able to have a web experience complete with flash in the future, and yes they will have it, and again yes, Timberwolf is the key piece that will allow it.
That is all they need know.

well even with Gnash or the software flash decoder (that Fab ported), you don't get Flash10 so many sites still won't work.
You also have the problem of performance. Even on a Mac Mini 1.5GHz it is slow trying to play back videos on websites. (now, having said that, I would like to see how AROS performs on my 3.0Ghz Core2Duo
What you really need is the current version of flash ported. But like that will happen soon.... :( _________________ AmigaOS 4.x Beta Tester - Classic Amiga enthusiast - http://www.hd-zone.com is my Amiga Blog, check it out! |

Actually, I'd consider that to be a feature. If the browser can't get to eg LIBS: without the user specifically browsing there, you can't have a drive-by infection.

Last time in another screenshot I saw Blender on his workbench, does this mean he has a working version of Blender for Amiga OS4?
|
Yes, Blender is being ported to OS4. I think that it was demonstrated at last Amiwest in a demo amchine with latest OS4.x for sam (along with new usb stack etc) and people could play with it. Blender, I think, for OS4.x, first time I heard about it was in 2007._________________

On AOS, CPU can indicate 100% load without the system showing any slow down. 2Ghz CPU is not enough for firefox on many web pages, but if the OS and browser GUI implementation is sane enough it can be very usable & responsive.
I hope Frieden bros manage to make "firefox" fly on Amiga. _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

| @QuBe I'm just a messenger here, I have nothing to do with the development of Timberwolf, thank the Frieden Bros!
@Gebrochen Yes Blender is coming, I had the chance to try a fully working version at Pianeta Amiga and it was pretty usable on the 667Mhz 440EP I tried it on (at 1280x1024).
Moreover, Broadblues said that the GL update speed was further improved and of course a huge update to Python is also in place.
Blender needs 4.1.1 to run so I believe we are going to be able to download it when we get our hands on this much anticipated update! Last edited by DAX on 24-Nov-2009 at 10:20 AM.

It isn't possible, the scrollbar is part of the web page's layout. It needs to be themeable, too. I appreciate that a lot of people have issues with the large border, and I tend to agree. We'll be looing into that. |
As long as the large border is there you should at least put it at the bottom of the window border, (WA_SizeBBottom, TRUE) where it does not look anywhere near as ugly as on the right side.
To get rid of it completely, open the window without size gadget and create your own invisible (no render) one:
sizegad = NewObject(NULL, BUTTONGCLASS, GA_SysGType, GTYP_SIZING, GA_RelRight, -16 + 1, GA_RelBottom, -16 + 1, GA_Width, 16, GA_Height, 16, TAG_DONE);
and attach it to the window.

Please add the following to the window flags specification: WFLG_SIZEBBOTTOM
