@Gebrochen
I repeat, Blender is basically almost finished and fully working (on os 4.1.1 that is) the build present at Pianeta Amiga (now outdated) already had the majority of features implemented. You could load demo scenes, play them (in full solid shaded GL) and manipulate stuff as you would expect.

In anticipation of this release I'm playing a lot with Blender (on the PC) these days, and all I can say is I am mesmerized.

At work we use 3DSMax2009 (and some plug ins) but Blender is more elegant and more fully featured as it incorporates all those plug ins features from the get go. It even sports fluids simulation and (gasp!) a 3D Game engine!

There are a lot of softwares in the open source world that do well against commercial apps, but this is ridiculous (how can such incredible software be free is beyond me, they could charge $2000 for it and people would buy it!).

Last time in another screenshot I saw Blender on his workbench, does this mean he has a working version of Blender for Amiga OS4?

Entil'Zha started working on one port, but then development seems to have slowed, and another guy independently decided to port Blender. Not sure if they have combined their efforts or not, but it sounds like Blender is very close to being perfected!

You mean for OS4.1.1? Awesome! That should mean Quake 3 will run even better.

@Georg
It seems kind of silly to tell one of the main authors of OS4 how to write programs for their OS...

(edit: Replaced "Rogue" with "Entil'Zha".)

And they could release them free and yet people would still buy commercial software... oh wait, this already happens...

@DAX

Wow, you use 3dstudio max reguarly.

Man, you could be doing a whole heap of object graphics in this 3d modelling package, and allowing amiga coders out there the opportunity to code some nice games for the rest of the userbase?

As for blender, yeah ok

so how long do us sam users have to wait again until OS4.1.1 ?

Cheers

@Georg

I know how this works, it doesn't solve the problem though, just makes it different for one single application which is not how that should be handled.

We're discussing possibilities for a revised window sizing.

Why, actually? You usually have much more horizontal screen estate than vertical, and there is already the title bar and screen title bar subtracting from that. I think the real issue is that usually the space (either right or bottom) is not usable as a client area.

@Gebrochen (ok Blender OT in genral )
I used LW on Amiga and PC before 3DSMAX (the latter I was basically "forced" to learn for work reasons).

I still didn't try 2010 but I found 2009 and earlier to be more of a HUB for the exclusive (excellent) plug-ins it has. Taken alone it would not be very up to date (the standard pipe-line generally also includes Z-Brush/Mudbox for modeling, CAT or MotionBuilder for animating and your choice of VRay-Brazil-Maxwell Render for rendering not to mention Real-Flow for fluids, it would be great to have features of that quality built in).

As for making 3D stuff for Amiga projects sure why not, it should be a "definite" project though.

Talking about big studios still not adopting Blender it isn't a matter of features anymore. 1st they cannot change a pipeline in the middle of a project, secondly their workforce is probably skilled in other softwares.
But there are many studios integrating Blender in their pipelins as it offers a free way to gain access to excellent Fluids simulation and Unbiased Renedering, moreover, there are new start-ups using Blender as their main software (and they all hire skilled Blender artists!).
So rest assured that we will hear of many more Blender commercial productions in the future.

Yes, true, but with it on the righthand side the way it is, one thing usually happens; it looks crap!

That's right. Not only does it become a cosmetic nonsense, it becomes useless. Unless you have gadgets in the "size" bar.

DOpus has a minimaml size gadget. Don't know how it works, but it doesn't have a normal one there; only window borders. Yet you can drag the corner. Not as easy as it looks being smaller.

IMHO the size gagget should "appear" when the mouse moves over the window corner. to be dragged. And then dissapper for everything else unless it is needed to fill the available space as normal.

@NovaCoder
They have always said that an ALPHA demo *might* be possible this year, but we will have to wait-and-see! Let's keep a space in our Xmas stockings, just in case Santa Claus (perhaps Rogue dressed in a red outfit & a dodgy white beard?) has a surprise :)

I think Hypex means (like I do) that an empty thick bottom is better looking than an empty
thick righthand side.. Anyway until you guys make a revised popup resize gadget then this
subject will be an issue for many.

This blender stuff is a bit off topic but there are a couple of points that need clarifying to avoid "disapointment"

This is a definite case of chinese wispers going on here! Starting from

"the file requesters in blender are appalingly slow"
then
"the file requesters have been speeded dramaticaly" (using gfx lib text BTW)
then
"the GL update speed was further improved" (nope never said that)
arriving at
"That should mean Quake 3 will run even better"

That last is an inference too far...

We've not shared source at the blender level, but Entil'Zha made improvements to minigl for his port which naturally work for my port too. Further improvements have been made since then, both by myself and Hans De Ruiter. Also Rogue and Entil,Zha gave me some very useful 'techelp' to resolve a couple of issues recently, for which I am very grateful.

Blender is almost done, subject to another suprise bug poping out of the woodwork (there are an awful lot of features for bugs to hide in) it will require the latest minigl amd the latest python, so effectively depends on 4.1 update 1.

What an exciting off topic

Which version of Blender, 2.4x or 2.5?

@broadblues
Thanks for the clarification. Will a newer version of Mini-GL ship with 4.1 update 1?

BTW, can't wait to get it! I'm playing with it on evenings (and week ends too) on the PC and I am quite surprised so far (truly powerful and "modern", not just feature wise but the whole philosophy behind it!).

I started 3D on Amiga, can't wait to get back at doing it once more!

@mr2
2.5 is in Alpha stage, the version available not only misses an installer but also many features of 2.49 (as the entire 2.49 feature list is not implemented yet) at this stage it is only for testing purposes.

Of course when it will be finished we will be very glad to have it on Amiga (right?)

Aside from the fact that it would be pointless to get an incomplete pre-alpha version as our first Blender, I wouldn't be very exited to get a buggy software that doesn't even posses all the features of the current version.

I will happily let others be 2.5's guinea pigs...
