@CodeSmith

And while I'm on my off-topic tirade... is this a picture of the motherboard we haven't seen yet? (except for the redacting over the CPU of course). It seems clearer (or maybe just bigger) than the ones in the old game site.

@CodeSmith

I saw that too. I had to click on the "knob" to make the "shaft" slide out, then click on one of the "balls" to get a view of it. It's the exact same picture that's been floating around for ever plus or minus a caption here and there. This is supposed to be "fun".

Ah, I see you're trying to bring the "humour" of koaftder from A.org here and claim it as your own. Hilarious!

Whats wrong with some of you guys?!

Seriously

I am a web developer for 5 years. I did not even need to peek inside the code to see some warnings, both design wise and code wise (site is so JQ heavy it locked up IE8 for 20 seconds f.e). I would not say the site is bad or crap though.

To a degree I can understand many here see all kinds of awesomeness when visiting the site, that is how we web developers impress our clients without actually delivering 100%

But it is just a f*n site, relax.

After all it's an Amiga - not a WIntel!

What i find the most hillarious in this thread is that now everybody, his sister and her pet is now a website developer! rofl as they say.

Kudos to the smart guy who noticed the os4 install screenshot could be os4 running on x1000, it is indeed.

I guess most people on here would be the more computer-savvy types, and as such will have built websites before. I've built several and continue to do so, but it's not my career and wouldn't consider myself a "web developer"...

Constructive critic wise, my biggest concern was not technical aspects of the site, but the usability side.

When I visited the site, first thing I noticed was the text "AmigaOne X1000. Coming Summer 2010. ", then a box under it "Click to register for updates". Since I visit Amiga-forums on regular basis I did not want to sign up. So I asumed that was it (Amiga fans must be really desperate to make so much noice of so little I told myself).

Human eye works from top left to right, last part human eye see is the bottom right part, so it is perhaps not the best idea to put the main menu on the right bottom part of the screen, and then hide it away with an animation.

Generally, a visitor to a site should be able to make out what the site is about and how to navigate it by scaning the front page in a couple of seconds. Those first seconds are so important, othervise you will loose the visitor if he gets lost.

Ok, so now I am just a pathetic analyser as everyone else lol (how important is this to amiga anyway), but at least you did not listen to Nielsen, otherwise we would have had times new roman on white background with blue links

@opi, @Other Malcontents

What amazes me about this thread, is people are critical of the darn color choices, navigation choices and other such non-sense.

Who cares! You miss the point!

If the first car rolled off the assembly line in 18 years (after years of bicycles only), would you critique its color!?

Or celebrate the fact that a V-6 engine is under the hood?

I swear, some people in this community are happiest when they can find something to complain about. And try to pass themselves off as "omniscient" because they were the first naysayer.

PEOPLE, stop criticizing over quibbles. We've waited decades for this time. It is finally here, because of the undying efforts of a few. Yet some seek to flog them... over what!? Because you'd prefer RSS over majordomo, or a different nav bar!

See the glass as half full. And don't miss the forest for the trees!

Nonsense?!

If it where not of the thread here I would never found the f"n navigation bar. And I am a f"n Amiga-nut, not some causal sufer coming in from Gizmodo on the lunch-break.

Its not really important in the long run, but a well thought out site can sell systems in the future (although its a complex formula).

Yes, total nonsense!

I'm sure before A-EON launches broadly, a more mainstream design will be taken with the website.

Meanwhile, expect them to challenge us "f'n Amiga-nuts" (on purpose), to dig a little.

@Shufflepuck

When I first read info about new a-eon pages, I used computer with IE6. I read muuuch criticism from blue and black (and etc) supporters and I wondered how bad must be that site. Now I´m using computer of my brother with modern web browser and my own comment is...

WOOOOOOW! Good and good and good! A-eon, your page is beautiful.

I don't know what you're implying but I am a web developer with 40 years of experience. OK only 5 years is web experience, still the truth is a valuable commodity so it is best to be economical with it, right?
That said a good website should be targeted for its audience and its purpose. Which IMNSHO this one was. The so called and self proclaimed web design "experts" seem to have missed this class of web design 101 and I doubt as a result they will have a huge amount of success in this field. Sure they may get some contract work from gullible people who know no better. But if they cannot come to a project with an open mind and the ability to produce a targeted website nobody who knows what they are doing will be interested. I certainly would not hire them and yes I am an R&D Manager and I have interviewed and rejected these "experts" who think they know everything.

@kadenaa

Here is my opinion, which is nowhere near as strong as other people's either way: I am not a web expert, although I have done web design and used to work as a web developer for a local firm (hi Bobson! ). Many clients actually liked designs that were truly atrocious and you are right that you have to serve them or not get paid.

This design is not atrocious, it's just overcomplicated for what it is, IMHO. People were asking for a simple website to present the information for quite some time and the answer was that it was under development and they couldn't quite understand how a simple website with some information could be taking this long. The result kinda clarified that question, instead of a simple website we got a WIMP interface. As I said before, it's cool for some things but I still think it's too complicated for the purpose.

Anyhow, if this design is to stay, I'd say the default size of the windows should be bigger, to better accommodate the content with no additional resizing. Also, considering Amiga users are the target audience, it might be a good idea to have a simple fallback page with, say, the subscribe box and the specs for users with older browsers.

You misunderstood. "How substantial the constructive part of statement is" does not mean my statement has no substance at all in regard to its constructivism.

No I did not misunderstand. I did not say that your comments lacked any substance now did I? Through our conversation though you made it clear you posted mainly for your personal amusement in a way that was not too constructive because you don't really like the companies involved.

Quote:
If you have a percentage of visitors who think your site is sub-standard (for whatever reason that opinion is formed) and that very percentage is not insignificant then you (as in the webmaster who makes the site) should consider improving it.

That obviously depends on why you are visiting it. If its because you already are pre-disposed to not liking the entity and want to look for flaws and know a place you can get away with being a -bleep- to them in public your concerns about the site are certainly a low priority.

Quote:
After all it's not a site of some hobby programmer, but a corporate [presentation] page trying to attract paying customers for a product, or am I wrong?

Presumably its a very small company currently trying to attract a very small hobby market with hopes in the future of attracting a larger nostalgic audience. For such a situation the site seems pretty good for a day 1 effort IMO. But sure, go ahead and compare it to a firm in an entirely different situation for your personal jollies right? To me thats just rather sad.

It does:- http://www.a-eon.com/oldbrowser.html

I've just tried in with IBrowse and it worked fine. It removes all the nice special effects that some people seem to object to and present a simple (but boring IMHO) page with all the information readily accessible.

However, under OWB the full website works fine.

TrevorD

Update: the fallback oldbrowser link also work in AWeb
