You name it, it's total overkill for just a KB-connection. And the rest is of no use to me. So this is no alternative.

| Well, if that's the keyboard that comes with the X1000, it's better than shipping it with a Windows-logoed keyboard. However, I can't see many people buying it for their SAMs, Minimigs, upgraded classics, etc.
I think there's a big potential market for a good quality Amiga branded keyboard. It wouldn't need to be completely custom. You can still use a standard 104 key layout but copy the traditional Amiga key layout as much as possible. Put the Amiga keys in the right spot, make the top of the numberpad the same, replace the "End" key with the "Help" key, etc. So the new Amiga keyboard has a few more keys than a traditional keyboard... just make sure all the old keys are there and in the traditional locations.
Also, as much as I like the "boingball" logo, I don't think it should replace the Amiga keys. All the software says "press R-Amiga" or "press L-Amiga", it doesn't say "press R-boing" or "press L-boing". Menu shortcuts show the appropriate "A" keycap, not a boingball.
But most importantly, I think the keyboard should be a something that's a good enough quality that Amiga users would want to buy even if it wasn't Amiga-branded. It should be something they would have bought at a local computer store but they'll buy it from Amigakit (or another Amiga distributor) instead (even if it costs a bit more), because of it's "Amiganess" |

No please, I need the End key, IMHO better replace the Scroll/lock, Pause, or PrintScrn... Last edited by marko on 08-Jun-2010 at 07:25 PM.

That's easy to change. It's only a single picture in your GUI theme.
@all Actually I'm not sure if I want to learn two different keyboard layouts again. The most of us have been using these common keyboards many years already.
But I second removing Scroll/lock, Pause, and PrintScrn.

We can provide the Boing Ball keys next to the Space bar or next to the ALT key - you can decide when ordering.
We can look into modifying the keymap to accomodate the change of position of the Boing Ball keys.

| I'm more than a little disappointed to see a generic PC keyboard with some stickers even if it is a Cherry Keyboard rated for 10 million keystrokes. In my opinion this customised Amiga version looks amateurish. It looks like there was little or no thought put into the aesthetics. The AmigaONE logo is only placed where it is to hide the Cherry logo and (in my opinion) the boing balls on the key caps are not a good look, the italic A is much better Having the AmigaONE logo to one side would look far better. Having it engraved, screen printed or with the sticker in it's own recessed area would have looked far better.
I think that the community should have been consulted over possible designs like Loriano is doing with his X500 case. In fact they should have commissioned Loriano to come up a custom shell for this Cherry keyboard and if it shared design cues with the X500 case that wouldn't be a bad thing.
Sorry Matthew, it's not my intention to cause offence, but I think we deserve better than this. |

Agree on your "two layouts" point.
Also, I think this thread proves that whichever route A-Eon takes on any given matter, some people will complain.
When the specs were announced and the price hinted at, a lot of people went, "What's the point of clinging to outdated, over-priced, non-standard hardware? Why can't we port AmigaOS to the same hardware that everything else runs on, so it can all be standard and cheap and mass-produced?"
Then when they unveil a keyboard which is basically the same keyboard everyone else uses, and therefore competitively priced, a (I hope completely different) bunch of detractors derides them for that too.
Poor A-Eon. _________________ My new blog |

Coincidence is a strange thing, I was talking to amigakit about X1000 keyboards only today... No mention was made of this.
I must admit to being a huge Amigakit fan and I advocate them to everyone.
BUT it saddens me to say that this $10 keyboard looks very cheap and amateurish. I would even go so far as to say that it reduces the attraction of the X1000 package.
Can you imagine THAT next to the work of art that is the X1000 case??? Last edited by ddni on 08-Jun-2010 at 07:58 PM. Last edited by ddni on 08-Jun-2010 at 07:58 PM. Last edited by ddni on 08-Jun-2010 at 07:56 PM.

| I was having a look at the close-up shots of the Amiga keys and the AmigaONE badge just now and they look like high quality custom doo-dahs. It's not like they're just stickers. Plus, I agree with the guy above who said that all the keyboard really needed to do was wear some Amiga styling and not have a Windows key. I wouldn't call this amateurish, I'd call it simple yet adequate. Just my humble opinion.
As for stuff about consulting someone to produce an attractive custom case, I think that's way beyond the scope of what is realistic for this project. The case and keyboard are just a side dish to the main meal, which is the computer itself. Sticking boing balls and the word Amiga on some otherwise generic PC peripherals, to make it clear that they house a unique, Amiga-branded computer, seems like a healthy but manageable step in the right direction (compared to running AmigaOS 4 on non-Amiga branded boards in uncustomised cases with Windows keys on the keyboards). _________________ My new blog |

| As mentioned before it is a plain sweet keyboard but sweet means not beautiful enough to make it gorgeous. Let's face it guys, there are two possibilities regarding this average keyboard that doesn't serve at all the amiga design: a) either it's just another try to cash on the community's lust for anything amiga branded no matter what the design is, b) or the guys behind this don't have good taste and lack design skills. All we need isn't yet another MS keyboard in "amiga disguise" BUT a nice, ergonomic and originally designed keyboard that will be "boinged" also. Like it or not, design is important today. I would fancy sth similar to the Apple slim keyboard but amiga branded. _________________ Vanilla A500 NOS A1200 (Powered by V1200, CoffinOS r.58) PowerMac beast, MorphOS 3.15 (registered) |

But that seems insanely ambitious. Since A-Eon are already trying to crack the "no powerful hardware" question, it seems unrealistic that they'd fix the "no awesome retro-styled peripherals" problem too. You might as well say they should be making some exclusive Amiga software to bundle with it!
I actually think it's a good effort on their part covering up the Windows keys so neatly and putting an embossed boing ball on the case. The overall effect is nice, even if I can imagine a better X1000 of my dreams. _________________ My new blog |

I actually use a CDTV keyboard with my A1 via catweasel mk 3. I wouldn't swap it for anything. I like that an amiga-themed keyboard is available, though, even if its clearly based on a budget model. _________________ Playstation Network ID: xeron6 |

Well for the cost of your entire system, you could always just get one of these
Aside from that though, I do have a rather nice Logitech G-19

| Sorry, but the amigakit keyboard looks dated and cheap and is definately not worth £20 + delivery, with or without boing ball stickers. Should have Amiga-A symbols on those keys anyway not boing balls. Last edited by Daniel on 08-Jun-2010 at 10:00 PM.

Agree with that, NumLock is a complete waste of space when all the functions you gain by switching it off, are available as separate keys anyway.
I don't like this keyboard. Sure, it's an improvement over a standard Windows one, but it isn't an Amiga keyboard per se.
The boing balls on the keys look out of place, and could potentially cause confusion as the menus show the italic A. There's a menu key which is doing nothing, and the key which will operate as Help isn't labelled as such.
I'll stick with my Mac keyboard, which has a nice layout, a light on the caps lock key itself, a key labelled help and no Windows keys (the Apple logo keys are in the right place). It's still not perfect, but it is better and more asthetically pleasing than a Windows keyboard or this minimally-altered version.
Modifying a Mac keyboard by changing keycaps would be a good starting point. The USB keyboard drivers need fixing as some of the keycodes don't get picked up though.
