@damocles

It's really a milestone for mind share to show binary compatibility, when people can see aros m68k boots up to a usable desktop with a standard Commodore Amiga workbench 3.1 disk or 1.3 disk (or image under emulation) or their old favorite Amiga commercial application software disks which often worked standalone in the days before inexpensive hard disks. Without it, the disks end somewhere in the bootshell without the ability to click on icons to start any apps....

If the new workbench program is written under the assumption it will be running often under Janus-UAE it could have support for integrating the x86 and m68k AROS desktops into one, for a better emulation experience.

Hard disk users can always boot the full AROS system, whatever that ends up being.

@damocles

Verry nice, several opportunities open, depending how fast it is:

a) If its optimized enough and A1200/030/A3000/A4000 user can run its good
b) Definite solution for Natami, now they need drivers for their CPU, SuperAGA
c) It would be super if it can be well run on Minimig 68 000 14Mhz 4MB and other FPGA
d) All WInUAE/U-EAE users can now have AROS In a box!

Some more screenshots - this time showing that some ORIGINAL AmigaOS 3.1 applications already run under AROS m68k :)

PS. If there are some Amiga m68k developers who are interested in working on upper level compatibility (Intuition, Zune/MUI) please get in touch with AROS Dev Team (http://aros.sourceforge.net/contact.php)

@damocles

Next you will need to support hardware accelerators and expedition cards

You might have missed that it is running on an accelerator. =] "Jan 11, 2011: AROS on Amiga 1200 + ACA 1230 "

And Toni is working on Z3 expansion right now. =]

@terminills

What's the projected minimum configuration to run AROS68K comfortably?

I was thinking of maybe upgrading to a more powerful 68K hardware should AROS68K prove to be a good thing for Classics. I'm thinking stock A1200 or A4000 with 8 MB RAM will not be enough?

@WolfToTheMoon

I'm not sure if by default the debug info is turned on or not. if it's on a stock A1200 would be dog slow. and Aros68K will be a good thing for classics and Aros in general.

It depends on what you want to run. They are making the ROMs compatible with old OS versions so you should be able to boot with OS 1.x/2.x/3.x boot disk. So you would only needs some more memory for the bigger ROM.

greets,
Staf.

Great news:

Verry nice, several opportunities open, depending how fast it is, so a, c and d are already granted. Will there be a Natami version?

@terminills

yeah i ve forgot that, still cant set workbench to rtg resolution, might be due to boot shell that opens ahead of wanderer. im running most stuff from dopus5 for now, funny enough, was able to accidentally start ppaint in 1280x1024x8bit and it worked very well except the menus got stuck for few seconds after each rmb press.. in the lower color depths as by default it is pretty fast now.

I had a quick look and it seems the input.device is very unstable and crashes after a few minutes (if not seconds).

C:Assign also hangs when called without arguments (it's supposed to list system assigns).

It seems (floppy) disks inserted after having booted from HD aren't detected as well.

But still, they are making great progress ! :)

Looking great

Is that under UAE or natively running, and if so, what configuration?
