@System-log

I've been in contact with Greg Perry about an open source solution which I hope they can accept. And with this community, I think we can raise a bounty for both release the source and "hire" a good programmer todo the job for a cleanup (hi itix) ;)

from the interview :
We made a number of attempts to work with developers continuing with Amiga development to further develop Directory Opus for the Amiga line. Initially we signed a contract with Hyperion for licensing and development but they proved to be, well to be blunt, dishonest and untrustworthy, not what one expected in the Amiga world:). Even after repeated requests and discussions over six months after they signed the contract they refused to honour the deal and make payments for the licence as agreed.

Ouch!

Quote from answer from Dr.Greg Perry in that interview: Quote:
We have discussed the concept of an Open Source but there are some copyright and trademark issues. We would consider allowing this if a company or group purchased a licence as discussed above.

So now everybody who's still interested in Magellan2 start a bounty and license it and start developing it further. Do anybody know is Magellan2 fully or mostly 68k assembler ? Are there any chance to use deassembler-to-C tools ?

No. In fact Andreas Long commented specifically on that. One of the stumbling blocks were parts in assembler, however.

Getting it bougth as open sourced would probably be the best solution. Then it wouldn't be lost for yet another years for some incompetent developer and further development wouldn't be restricted to only some certain platform. If there will be some bounty or similar, I'll donate for sure.

I was/am a huge DOpus Magellan fan. I never liked DOpus 4.x mainly because I was a SID fan and also because I jumped straight to GFX card based big-box Amigas (A2000/A4000) from my A500 ditching the AGA based A1200. The multi-windows DOpus Magellan WB replacement mode served me right for years. I really miss it in OS4 and would happily buy it if it was available.

I'd certainly contribute to a bounty that would bring Dopus Magellan II to AmigaOS4!

@nexus

I've think we should broader the perspective and not only narrow it down to OS4 since there is a lot of money for a licence in the first place.
Best option is to make it open source, and by doing that AROS people can contribute to such initiative. This would probably be the bigges bounty in Amigaland and we need all interested to coolaborate for it IMO.

@Develin

sure, i have no complains about open source or Dopus5 for AROS & MorphOS.
Give it to all as long as indeed some people are going to work on it.
I just wanna have it ready as soon as possible

Good inrerview .

This part roxx :

And not forgetting 68k version either. I think it would be the best to upgrade existing 68k version on some parts at first, before going to do bigger ports anywhere. Maybe just iron out the issues which stops it working on OS4, fixing some >4GB filesize calculations, some cosmetic changes for today's needs, make it available etc. Just to get it going and extend the features with time later.

low initial licence fee

I'm wondering how much is that license fee and who to ask ? Maybe somebody who's running bounties already could ask and set up a bounty. Troels ?

Maybe good idea.

I would DEFINATELY contribute to an open source DOpus Magellan II bounty. It's sad to hear that Hyperion realy bungled the deal there. They missed a great opportunity to officially replace Workbench with something SO much better.

No need to convert that block into PPC. You can embed 68k asm into PPC code and call it using EmulCall68k() and similar calls.

Can someone from Hyperion comment on that?
