Cool. I really should try that some time.

Btw. I'm writing this post on my Sam460 with OWB. Very first Amigapost since 1998. :)

Even though I'm using the built in Silicon Motion chip the responsetivety in AmigaOS 4 is great.
My other machine is Corei7 and it is starting to lag since it was more than 3 month since I last reinstalled Windows 7. And my 1.5GHz laptop havent been reinstalled in 2 years. It performs slower than my classic A4000 33Mhz.

This feels great and the 460 is worth every penny I have spent.
Now I will start coding Amiga again.

Glad you like "Currently most powerful Amiga" (until X1000 is out)
and we are all glad to have skilled users back.

As well as this user feeling, not related to big numbers, just sounds great!

Glad to hear it, but I am intersted in speed comparison to a real hard drive or DVD ROM? My experience with cell phone SD Cards is that they are quite slow even with USB 2.0 connection (e.g. 3 time slower then HDD).

Off course, its good to have it as option, as well as it proves that with some downscaling and PPC chips in phones, OS4 could be a cell phone OS / nettop OS just like special versions of LInux, Windows and ChromeOS/Androi) are.

Hope OS4 will grow to be a real AmigaOS 5

As with so many things, you get what you pay for. Buy the cheapest SD card, and you're likely to get a slow one. The SD card standard has different speeds, just like IDE does. Right at the bottom is 1-bit SPI mode (nice and easy to use, but slow), and goes right up to 4-bit modes with a theoretical max throughput of 312 MB/s. Of course, it also depends on the speed of the flash RAM, and the SD card slot hardware.

When getting an SD-card, it's worth checking what its transfer rate is.

@Hans
and make sure they are "original".
Seems weird I know, but a while back I got (from a HK seller over at ebay) a SanDisk Ultra2 card which had the same transfer speed of the normal one I already had.
Turns out they made a batch of "fakes".
Better to pay more at a trusted store...

I saw the SAM460 booting from SD at Amiga show in Essen, it was way slower (2 times slower I guess) than my SAM440 booting from HD. Please keep in mind this was before release of SAM460 and probably some BetaBeta AOS...

Sorry for beeing a bit of Topic here

@vox

I have used a standard 2GB Sandisk SD card which has a low transfer rate.
Of course it's slower than a SATA HDD, but I found it booting time very acceptable.
It was like 2 times slower than HDD which is not bad for a standard SD Card

I think SD card booting is great as a back-up system when something goes wrong with your HDD setup.

You should compare SD-CD, not SD-HDD

SD Card uses usbdisk.device on AmigaOS. I have partitioned and installed SD card using this device. It is mounted as DH3:

However booting directly from SD card, I choose USB HD from UBoot as 1st boot device and Sam460 boots from there...

I have been trying to boot from an sd card on a sam 440epflex.
I can get it to load the kickstart from the card but it boots OS4.1 from the hard drive.
only devices attached to sii3114ide.device show up in the early startup menu
does the usbdisk.device have to be set up in diskboot config or something for non sam 460 machines?

@Spectre660

Did Sam440Ep have a built-in SD card slot ?
Or are you trying to boot from an external sd card reader ?

Trying from an external SDCard reader.
What I am wondering is if the Sam 460 version of OS4.1 has something enabled for the built in SD Card that the other versions dont have.

in the System:Kickstart/diskboot.config

; $VER: diskboot.config 53.1 (21.6.2008)
;
; device units flags (1 = mount HD, 2 = mount CD/DVD, 3 = both, +4 = support LUNs)
it8212ide.device 16 3
lsi53c8xx.device 64 3
cybppc.device 16 7
scsi.device 8 2
2nd.scsi.device 8 2
a1ide.device 4 3
sii0680ide.device 16 3
sii3112ide.device 8 3
sii3114ide.device 16 3
sii3512ide.device 8 3

current version is like this. I guess Sam440 doesn't recognize external card reader during boot-scan fast enough for booting. Since Sam460 sd card slot is on board, maybe it is scanned before harddrives ?

; $VER: diskboot.config 53.3 (22.12.2010)

Not sure. Kickstart loads ok from the SDcard but OS4.1 does not find the card at boot time.
It may be that external readers are not supported as there may be many different ones.
The onboard ones are of a specific type.

I am going to try with a flash drive instead.
Will report back.

I think there are newer kickstart components on the Sam460 ISO.

@elwood

Good news .
I have just booted ok from a usb flash drive .
SFS formated and copied the the contents of the Amiga OS 4.1 Update 1 for Sam440 CD.
The problem may be with my External SDCArd reader which is a combo SimCard reader .
still experimenting.
