@wawa

I guess the reason why the SAM460 is equipped with the Silicon Motion 502 chip is mainly for display purposes, but it is also able to produce the sound, handle the video decoding (MPEG-2) etc., so for whatever the main purpose of the board is (I doubt it was specifically built to run AOS4) the chip was chosen for those reasons.

Maybe Linux has already a driver for that chip, so no need to invest in additional programming there.

But just a guess.

Just curious, where have you seen any mention of that?

For example this product page doesn't have any mention of that (which I find weird, if it really can do that...)

@Jupp3

Reading the spec sheet properly I think you're correct, it has only interface for MPEG-2 decoder, but doesn't do the decoding itself.

I just briefly checked this spec sheet from Silicon Motion.

rossv : I don't own a Sam460 and there is still much work to do but what you did is a great achievement. Congrats ! I would be interested in seeing what this driver source looks like.

Works! Now some fresh (OpenGL accelerating) display driver and the 460 becomes useful to me

Noticed some cracks during playback though. Practically always there, for example when playing the OS4 startup sound or the AHI test pling.

Nevertheless, thanks! A huge step forward.

This card was supposed to be based on the same chip i believe, and it talks about mpeg decoding, tv etc.

@Shufflepuck

I think this was important step for Sam460 defiantly increased its value/usefulness factor.

"A ZV port is also included as an interface for external circuitry for MPEG decoding or TV input."
