Same here. This confirmed my worst fears.
A final price of upwards of 2200EUR is outrageous, IMHO. ;(

I wish good luck for the project and the Amiga in general, but this price is probably the final push for me to leave the scene.

It may be a Porsche in Amiga terms, but it won't perform like a Porsche. Or at least, keeping the metaphor, you won't find much gas it to run. ;(

Your assertion that "who wants it, shall buy it" is also wrong.
There may not a more interested person in buying it than me, but I won't buy it.
It's simply too much money, regardless of what it does or doesn't do.

This is really sad for me, I wouldn't want this very downbeat post to be confused with trolling.

Why? I can't afford the X1000 either, but it would never stop me enjoying my A1....?

Why? While the X1000 is top of the line (for AmigaOS 4.x) there are other options.

EDIT:
Bah! Beaten by a minute.

IIRC, his Eyetech A1 died.

@BrandonLee

As much as you may want an 'authentic' amiga experience, there are other options, and they are improving as time goes by.

Take the ~$3000 over time and put it towards bounties on more affordable platforms--this would equate to more progress overall in the amiga platform community.

@BrandonLee

Sorry to hear that your going to leave the scene. One comment, with the X1000 becoming available and the pricing being high, people will be selling off their current AmigaNG systems. This will make obtaining a used system a little bit more affordable.

I'll also say that the X1000 is not the end, it's just another step along the way...

Take care,
Bill

The problem with BrandonLee seems to be that his has no interest in any OS4 machine that has a slower CPU than his damaged A1 with a G4 cpu.
The only model faster at the moment is the Amigaone X1000 .
I wonder what he needs to do that he could not on a Sam 440ep 733mhz or 800mhz or a Sam460 ?

Hmmm ... SAM 460 (X500) doesn`t look that expensive now?

@MacSociety

I worry that at $2700, in this economy, sales may not be high enough to sustain it. Are they releasing two different models like a value model and a fully equiped model?

I know the $1000 price point is certainly a good number.

Of course, I did pay $3000 for my A3000 back in 1991... when PCs were at $500

I just reread... the price is basic without taxes, shipping, mouse and os... that makes it about $3700... As much as I like Amiga, that's far too steep, and with only 1GB RAM.... I am not sure where the cost is. The news release did nto speak to processor or other technology to account for the price. Video card, HDD and other devices are old enough that they don't cost much.

I might suggest that at that price, they clearly list what comes with it in an itemised breakdown IMHO...

Just don't get it, why leave the community because you can't afford the X1000?
Just sit and wait and hopefully people will start selling old A1's and sams for others to buy cheap.

There has been sam460 sold for about 450 euro. So just have some ice and focus on other things in life in the meantime.

You can use AROS or MorphOS . So you do not have to leave the scene:)

@BrandonLee

Back in 2005 I was waiting for the next Amga to come from several sources. I thought the AmigaOne might still be available, or that Amiga Inc might release one. I waited until 2007 and could nto wait to get a computer.

I ended up buying a Mac and running Amiga in emulator. I spent about 2k on the mac, which is still a lot. I left the hopes of owning modern amiga hardware for at least another 5 years until it was time to replace the mac.

I feel disapointed. I was hoping for a system around $1500. In order for the community to grow, it must sell hardware at an afforable price point.

Apple finally learned that with iPods, iPhones and iPads... I guess I will keep hunting for a resonable A4000T with PPC - my lifelong dream...

@A500

but because apple does not manage to produce expandable computer (MacPro) below 2400€, we should't try it either....

@A500

People keep missing the point of the Amigaone X1000 .

It was never intended to be a machine sold to a huge market.
It is a vehicle to bring SMP and high end graphics power to Amiga OS.
The proven CPU available to do this is very expensive and limited in supply.
Thus the limited machines made are going to be expensive and prized by
those who own them.
The next models made after the X1000 will be more affordable to normal Amigans.

"Amiga" doesn't need to be expensive. You may consider to give AROS or MorphOS a try, both much more bang for the buck.
Look, an AresONE starts at 199.99 (Vesalia, price incl. VAT & OS), MorphOS systems are also pretty cheap. Plus AROS and MorphOS offer laptop options.

@Spirantho

Why? Because my A1 broke down, unfortunately.
And all other options (SAMs,even the rare 2nd han A1s) are also pricey.

Please understand that I would like to stay, I love this machine.
But it seems I don't love it enough to spend 2400EUR to stay "relevant".
Or pay 800EUR to get something that is much inferior to said X1000.

I would stretch to about 1000EUR for the X1000. Good price for what the machine is.
I really can't see this selling to more than a fraction of the already small user base, sorry.

I don't "need" it for anything.
I'm just making a decision that I don't/can't pay for another machine that gives me about the same that myA1 gave me.
Basically, I'm not willing to pay "again" to get my A1.

As I said earlier, this is not a criticism, I don't doubt that this is the best price that can be achieved.
I just tink it's way too much.

I'm keeping an eye on used systems. But they are few and sometimes also pricey, for now.

People here tend to get personal when someone doesn't "blindly" support whatever comes out.
I've always been a supporter, since the A500 launch.
But it's getting more and more difficult to justify investing so much on a hobby machine.
And people ask "what do you do on it?". And I say "...not much...".
This has been enough for me, but isn't anymore.
