Wolfenstein 3D running on a 286 in a computer store |
Cinematic games like Wing Commander and then the cut scenes of C&C seemed far more of a threat to me. Cinemaware games were an Amiga thing and the PC was taking the premise and running with it for action and RTS games. Wolfenstein was simplistic but Doom was the nuclear torpedo IMHO. C= had just got Wing Commander ported to the CD32 (clumsily with Akiko c2p coding errors) and even a slow A500 version but they were not ready to convince ID to port Doom. They should have been courting them from the point Wolfenstein 3D was released i.e. by giving them free A3000s etc and some maybe even showing them the A3000+ with AGA and DSP prototype for feedback.Last edited by BigD on 22-Nov-2019 at 04:27 PM.

Wolfenstein's graphics and level geometry were simplistic, but it was the first game that allowed fluid motion through a 3D map. The player could actually run in Wolf instead of just creeping along. Doom had much more impressive graphics and level design, but of course it required a 386 to walk those BSP trees and texture map the floors and ceilings.

Traversing the BSP trees is one of the fastest part of the engine, the console and Apple ports of Wolfenstein 3D used it as well instead of raycasting. What is slow is rendering and drawing the wall segments and especially the floors/ceilings. _________________ This is just like television, only you can see much further. |

There was something about using BSP trees that could not be done (or done fast enough) on a 286, but I don't remember what it was. I don't remember if it was just overall processing power, or a missing processor feature. Do you recall? It was probably mentioned in one of John Carmack's .plan files.

Nah. There's nothing about the BSP trees you can't do on a 286, the SNES had a WDC 65C816 which is in the same ballpark (Wolf3D didn't have any special chips in the cart). It's a very simple data structure to handle, all the heavy lifting is done in the pre-processing phase on a different computer. It wasn't used in the DOS Wolf3D because Carmack "discovered" it when he had to solve the problem of concentric sectors for Doom, and the SNES port of Wolf3D was done after this, in parallel with Doom. TL;DR Carmack simply wasn't aware of it when the original DOS version Wolf3D was created.

Trevor mentions that he will be going to Amiga Ireland 2020 with Matthew. I'm considering going as well. Does anyone know what the attendance of Amiga Ireland has been over the years. Is it a big turn out of fans? I just don't want to allocate resources to attend a show in a different country than mine that has low attendance. _________________ Sent from my Quantum Computer. |

Cool. Maybe one day, we will (you know, we, the basic users, those that are not beta testers and who stay with older drivers and no new updates for months or years while beta testers enjoy using these news drivers and softwares) also be able to play 4k (or even full HD) nicely with the new A-EON's new video driver. _________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz |

| So there is an update to 4.1 coming soon? Hopefully it'll include Classic and not just modern hardware. |

| Wow. What an extremely long winded way to say nothing at all. Also, Tabor is getting funnier and funnier by the day. It needs to be a few hundred at most if it doesn't want to be the epitome of waste of money. Can only imagine those behind it are having severe regrets by now. They'd *HAVE* to be aware of this. They wont say it of course because admitting it was a terrible investment does nothing to help offload them, but unless impressively stupid they'd know. Severely outclasses by machines costing pocket change. The Amiga price to performance ratio has been terrible since the 90's, but if its even $500 it'd be the single worst machine ever in that regard yet for something "new". And before typical knee jerk reactions kick in,... no "classic" hardware isnt part of the equation. Collectables command a premium. Heck, even old pc gear is getting pricey.
