On OCS it was just 16 per color component. |
16 yes but made up of 4-bits per gun or color hence LoadRGB4().

But that was hardware limitation not a software limitation. |
Well I wasn't getting into palette sizes, just colour resolution per gun. And on AGA there were only 8-bits per gun. So a LoadRGB8() would have made more sense.
Instead they uses 32-bits which meant software had to left shift the colour value by 24-bits or do it properly and put the 8-bit value all together in each long word byte, to which the OS then would shift back down to the right 24-bits for the hardware! It didn't make sense and wasted memory and CPU cycles!
The hardware was limited to 8-bits and it was quite standard across all platforms, not a problem. The software should have been limited to what the hardware supported or let the programmer pass a resoltution to support their wacky 32-bit colour system. |

Reckon myself that's probably the main reason why we ended up with the 30 char limit and was it really so bad, can't say it ever really caused any major headaches in the everyday use of the Amiga to me... |
The limit really only should have come into place when selecting files from a list. A program simply opening a file name should have had a large string buffer dedicated to the name as it had a file path as well.
Of course it probably limited the file name anyway. |

Another case of a thread title that doesn't reflect this posting, but....
It is an instance of talk about Greg Donner and people might not be aware that he updated his site as recently as last month:
http://www.gregdonner.org/workbench/index.html
In addition, just yesterday he made an appeal:
http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=1266338&postcount=1
In case anyone wishes to help him out.
