Sam460 is a nice machine. Just needs support for onboard SATA and PCIe 1x
Its a shame that after two years there is no support for all components.
Thats why I didn't sell ma SAM440.

After weighing it all up, the 460 seems just ahead of the 440. I've not much use for video playback *really*. It would be nice, but I can live without it. I have 3 other machines that can play back all the video I need. And while the SATA card is a crappy solution to the problem of missing DMA, at least it's a solution.

Hopefully 3D and decent video playback is not YEARS away....

Now if sound give me grief, then I will be unhappy....

Anyway, not got the thing yet. Hurry up AmigaKit

DO get a Peg2.. its the best platform for OS4 besides x1000 atm!

So don't get an A1 because of their age, but DO get a Peg2 which came out at the same time?

Makes no sense.

Pegasus II

* Better memory controller.
* Less hardware issues
* Less hardware support in OpenFirmware

Vs

AmigaONE-XE

* Horrible memory controller
* Missing pull down resistors on USB data pins.
* Crossed IRQ signal
* Uboot whit more hardware support, but has problems whit USB keyboard.

Maybe, but @realize's point was don't buy the A1 'cos it's old, but do buy the P2, but they're the same age. The A1XE and the Peg 2 both came out in 2004/5.

That's what doesn't make sense, if the A1 is "reaching end of expected life" then so is the Peg2, regardless of which one is more fully featured.

and what does actually make any sense when it comes to os4 hardware?
realize may actually have some point and i think his advise would be helpful for an os4 newcomer. peg2s despite their age are still dependable machines as it looks like. while a1 were broken to begin with, and now seem to die like flies. at least i dont remember any thread about a dead peg2, while i have seen plenty about x1s.

AmigaOne XE was launched in 2002. It ended around 2004 so they could be just same age, though.

Yes they saved some money on the poor quality CPU fan; it is usually the G4 that breaks (it runs hotter because of altivec), and some capacitors seem to be falling off too easily, and volt regulator also seems to be less than accurate, anyone that has AmigaONE-XE will sooner or later experience computer does not boot because the backup battery is dead.

It pretty amazing how usable the computer is; considering all this problems.

Typing this on my SAM460 machine. Will write a more detailed "report" later, but suffice to say I'm extremely happy. Going to be days just to learn it all again.

Am glad I went for the nice case!

Typing this on Timbrewolf.

Welcome to the AmigaNG experience! Seriously, it can be a lot of fun. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Also yes!

Let us know how you get on with your new toy, please, as I'm sure there are others in the same boat as yourself.

@Spirantho

I really need to collate these thoughts into one coherent place. Till then, these rough notes wll have to tell the tale.

I ordered, from AmigaKit, the SAM460 bundle with 2GB RAM, a 1TB SATA HDD, DVDROM, and AmigaKit branded keyboard.

It's not really possible to fault the service from AmigaKit. I've exchanged something like 20 odd PMs with the guys and always got a prompt answer, sometimes at "stupid o'clock" when they really shouldn't be here. Have only high-praise to say for there level of service.

AmigaKit sell the SAM460 in a fairly generic PC case. I had a look at a few reviews, and thought my Amiga deserves better. So I asked for my SAM460 to be put in a decent case, which AmigaKit sourced from ebuyer.com. Of course I had to pay a bit more for that.

Anyway, AmigaKit did a fine job of putting the machine together. It arrived nicely wrapped. Before powering the machine on I opened up the case and checked for loose cards etc; there was none. The machine was put together far better then I'd have done (I can build PCs but tend to be a bit slap-dash).

So anyway, after playing around with OS4.1 I'm quite taken a-back at how far things have come. The thing *looks* gorgeous. AmigaKit installed the OS themselves, which in some ways is a "shame" cos I can't comment on the initial install process. After I've learned my way around I might well run the install again so I can get everything "just right". Not sure yet.

I was suprised and happy to see some real printed materials to go over. The box containing the OS4 CD and manuals is nicely put together.

I did have some strange issue with getting the machine on my LAN. Not quite sure what was happening really, but in the end after changing some ports about on a switch it all just came to life. Odd, but nothing more....

The biggest problem I currently have (actually the only one, really) is with sound. It's really crackly. I've tried the newest drivers off os4depot, but it seems AmigaKit beet me too it (or else they are part of Update 5). I don't know how/if this can be solved, but it's quite a PITA. Have no idea how to diagnose the problem even.

I'm a little overwhelmbed by everything else. I've played with a few things; openssh seems to work just fine which is a "relief", as does smbfs. Can't get mplayer to play anything, but even if it could it would be crackly anyway....

I briefly tried to run a 68k prog, but that fails with a generic "can't run that" error? I'm unsure what I'm doing wrong there.

Disk, and network performance both looks great. So does the funky composite effects, and the general look on my Dell screen at 1080p is amazing.

I'm alittle puzzled if I have to register my copy with Hyperion?

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix the sound problem, I'm err all ears?

Lawrence

@Aslak3

I believe the archive for SM502 audio driver on OS4Depot came with installation instructions, just maybe they haven't been followed correctly.

PS. Have you installed Jack yet? Let me hear your feedback!

http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/workbench/jack.zip

If your into modern music you might like JackCharts as well.

http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=audio/play/jackcharts.lha

Congratulations and have fun with your new Amiga.

What app did you run. If it's system friendly then you could try black listing it so it against the 68k JIT by opening prefs/compatibility and draging and dropping the program executeable into the listl. If it requires ECS/AGA or just fails you could run it in UAE. AmigaKit may have installed RunInUAE for you already.

Create an account on the Hyperion website and you'll be able to enter your registration number there. I'm not sure if registration is automated or if there'll be a delay. You may also wish to register at the support forum too.

@Rob

I think I just got unlucky with the 68k app. Some others I've tried seem to work quite well. Haven't looked at actual emulation outside the OS yet (ie. games). Maybe tomorrow!

Where do I find the registration number? I'm guessing it's on some of the papers I "skipped through"....

@djrikki

I'm pretty sure I've followed all the instructions correctly. I'm running version 6.3, as confirmed in the AHI prefs program, and have adjusted all my volumes etc.

I'm running this:

http://os4depot.net/share/driver/audio/sm502_audio.lha

But after rebooting, and hitting the play test button I get a tone punctuated with crackles.

Any ideas, anyone?

Lawrence
