Good news for ACube - more market exposure.

Good news for MorphOS - a currently-available HW platform at last.

Good news for lots of people.

What do you mean? There are literally hundreds of currently-available MorphOS HW platforms out there.

Or did you mean "brand new, unused, with guarantee"? Then there's at least one available, since years.

Yes, Efika. But then Sam460ex is much more usable thanks to more memory, definitely faster processor and more up to date mass storage options. It is also much more expensive, but a choice is always good.

And I'm a bit sceptic about that "brand new" status. If these machines are only made on small batches (quote from other thread: "On the hardware side, a new batch a Sam460ex (with red PCB ), Minimig with 4MB RAM and the brand new ARM Controller are on sale and available."), how can one be sure they're available as new when official MorphOS version actually comes. It's very uncertain to have them as brand new in future I think? It's useless to say you can buy new machines if availability is on very small window... I'll rather have broad market for used stuff than limited amount of new stuff. But however... if we have both, it isn't worse at least :) It just isn't mandatory to have small custom newly available market...

@thread

this is splendid news. supporting the SAM460 may not make much sense when looked at from the perspective of price/performance against older power macintosh hardware, but it does offer access to more modern graphics cards via the PCIe x16 slot; is a brand-new system with warranty; and supports the amiga operating system as well. i have both amigaOS and MOS on my pegasos, and while i prefer amigaOS, i think SAM460 owners will enjoy the choice.

they'll also enjoy blazing-fast 3D support if they have a PCI-hosted graphics card installed. on my peg, the one use i do have for MOS is quake3, which is noticeably faster in MOS.

it's great to see acube continuing its tradition of funding third-party OS development for their products. my SAM440ep-flex runs tons of operating systems, and the SAM460 will soon have, in addition to amigaOS, options including AROS, haiku, linux, MOS and BSD. rock on, acube!

Good move. I Think this is a kick for us OS4 guys when "nothing happens".

Still waiting for my XE from repair... Years are passed in a while...

(Historical machine maybe when getting it to work well?)

I am not very surprised that Alan went underground as making such machines.

Still I hope him well. Redhouse I'm thinking.

Actually, it wasn't a joke Darrin.
Just an opinion, but I know I've got to keep those to myself.

I Think OS4 is fine and I'm drinking and fusking all the time.

A good machine would be a Sam x1200 that covers it all. Maybe they have some agreement because I don't see any reason to convert Morphos to such a small machine. Performance wise. We'll see.

Hoping the best for us.

Wouldn't want to do that.
Besides, since they announced that Warp3D drivers were being written for the Radeon HD video cards I've been kind of interested in exploring OS4.

And the SAM460 isn't that expensive (not when compared to the X1000).

This whole market may get even more interesting if A-eon's next machines support OS4 and MorphOS.

On the other hand, if I want to run Linux or AROS I'm going to do it on an X86 system.

The rationale to port MorphOS to the 460 is for sure not to provide access to high computing power (for taht we have the cheap and used G4s and soon G5s), but instead reach part of those ppl with a high probable interest in MorphOS (i.e. OS4 users) and to warrant supply of new non EOL machines for the MorphOS community. While I like my Mac mini and Powerbook pretty much there are actual reasons against used kit.
Sure a lesser price and bit more horsepower (and in particular Altivec) would be helpful, but most stuff will work rather nicely on the 460. Given the actual sitiation in Amigaland and PPCland I think it makes sense to add the 460 to the MorphOS hardware pool.

What is this about Haiku running on a SAM 460.

Further info on this would be nice.

@amigasociety

i replied to you briefly via PM as well, but basically francois revol has been working on porting haiku over to the sam460ex board for some months now. he recently described his work trying to get the haiku bootloader up and running on his board at the last begeistert in dusseldorf. it's one of the reasons there is a haiku table at pianeta amiga this weekend.

the acube guys rock!

@iggy & all

I did not want to use swear words;)

The idea could be good. Maybe more customers to A-Cube and faster machines.

We really need better new and with good drivers. Si? (Yes?)

My only hope (last one) is here that Morphos, AOS4 and Aros get a bit together because we will not survive. Not another Beos etc.

Get in touch together and have fun. I'll have fun with the oldies until there is some good compromission.

Waiting for a good surprise. Like Santa-Claus..
