| While driving to work…
Was thinking about Linus Torwalds words against micro kernels (how they are futile)… and thought about MP and our experience about it at work…. So far I have not done work on/for embedded device that has MP on. In telecommunications it seems that the performance hit on message passing is too great, one would need to run most of telecom SW anyway in kernel space, negating all advantages of MP. Anyway… if MP is wanted, monolithing approach might be a must, when not using MP, microkernels work very nicely for hard realtime telecommunications systems.
(the product I work for now has monolithing OS and no MP on (as far I know), less than 2GB is not enough to boot up that 6core monster, with previous SW that was running on microkernel OS (we did experiments with MP), 64MB was enough, and before that when we had the AmigaOS like RTOS, 1MB was enough …. And the bloat is not just because of the OSs, but it plays some role anyway. Funny to know how hundreds of millions of people daily still use some SW without MP enabled in the OS.)
End conclusion? None. Just flow of my thoughts….

| btw...
There is Linux for 68000 Amigas without MMU, right? Does it somehow amnyway have memory protection? (I believe not)
Would be interesting to play with 68000 and 68030 versions of linux (in UAE) and observe the effects of MP in systems behaviour. Last edited by KimmoK on 12-Dec-2012 at 09:31 AM.

Don't give the man too much credit. All he did was create the kernel of a public domain Unix knock off.
I've used micro kernel OS' since the '80s, and i can assure you that they are clearly superior to a monolithic OS/kernel.
Could you point me toward the evidence that he uses to justify his opinion? Because frankly, its bull.... |

Linus actually admitted himself that microkernels are, in theory, finer designs.
The debate is moot today since most desktop OSes today incorporate some features of both micro and monolithic design.
Just like CISC vs RISC, really... _________________

his USENET debates with andrew tanenbaum on the subject were required reading for us back at university. a partial copy of the thread in question is available here.
