Said to be written in 15% MC680x0-assembler and 75% Pascal, the source code of the popular paint package Photoshop has just been released for the general public as a 587 kb ZIP-archive. Interested AmigaOS developers may want to visit download the source code here.

@Petah

Did you even bother to read the licence before posting this ???

Sure I (*) could port it and use it for my personal needs but in no way could I distribute that binary.

Heck I couldn't even distribute the (modified) sources....

I might be able to create a big diff-patch were every interested user would than have to:

- download those sources
- apply the patch
- compile from modified sources

* _I_ could probraly port it if I gave myself several years for it.

@Kronos

License? Understanding licensing is complicated.
Understanding versioning is easier:
"1.0.1, 1990"

Sure Petah, let's get it ported!

@Petah
Kronos is right. The license is *extremely* restrictive. The source code may be released, but it is NOT "open source" as we know it. More like Microsoft's attempt at open source, which was "look but don't touch".

@ChrisH

It's an exhibit in a 'museum'.

Here's the proper article: http://www.computerhistory.org/adobe-ps-source/

It's value is historical, although as with any history you could surely learn things from it.

@Peta

I find you poll options rather annoying, maybe I'm just in grumpy mood this morning, but they seem deliberatly chosen to cause offense....

@Petah

I believe that SketchBlock is already more advanced than this first version of Photoshop.

Yes I believe SketchBlock is a great program that has a lot of potential to become the best ever Amiga graphics package

I also find the options offensive, due to as we have some very good software available to us!

@Yssing

would be great to get the sourcecode of the first version of final cut pro, before macromedia sold it to apple, now that would be usefull for our powerpc machines.

@Petah

I would be more interested if source code of Photogenics was available, would love an OS4 native updated version of this, my favourite all time Amiga graphics program

Update: But Sketchblock is getting close and with a few tutorials should think become greatest Amiga graphics package

Not interested in that bloated piece of SW....
Doubt it offers anything current Amiga available SW can not do for me.

(But I understand that mainstream worships photoshop beyond sanity, so it might be good for Amigas...)

btw... IIRC, ImageFX can use Photoshop filters etc... perhaps some people will adapt more filters/tools/whatever from photoshop to our native apps...

@KimmoK

you have no idea. you cant compare any amiga gfx package with photoshop whichever version. dpaint is nice for pixel gfx, but full depth image editing is another story believe me. there is a reason photoshop is established as standard.

Compared to THAT version here, that 1.0.1 version, ANY DeluxePaint or whatever Amiga paint package is pure gold, ah no, not gold, platinum it is. Actually, even MS Paint is not worse than that historical Photoshop here

Wonder why they restricted that licence that much. Any sane mind will instantly move that sourcecode to the trash were it belongs to anyway. Weird. As if it was some kind of treasure. It is not, it is crap.

Modern Photoshop is a different story, of course.

Oh really ? I suggest you check Photoshop's features before saying so...

Photoshop 1.0 already supported:

- numerous file formats (including GIF, TIFF and IFF/ILBM, up to 8bit just to name a few)
- edit larger than memory files
- true color editing/saving
- apply filters, like motion/gaussian blur

With that alone it's way more advanced than any version of DPaint, even the latest ones...

But as said by other people, it's not a pixel paint app, but rather a photo editing tool...

@Petah

I would find more interesting if ArtEffect was open sourced. Opensourcing Photoshop 1.0.1 is useless.

@Daytona675x

i ve never used photoshop1 and i have not used macs up till they had true color or grayscale at least, but with photoshop3 you could do a number of things you wasnt able to on amiga, just to name the famous stamp option. i have used some amiga gf software extensively and while its quite cool for certain tasks photoshop is state of the art. in comparison i had never an impression amiga imaging software was intended for professional use. im sorry, it lacked the workflow and the options necessary.

You forgot Art Effects (4), which is IMHO the easiest & most modern paint program available for the Amiga (but I haven't really tried Sketchblock).
