Tried downloading and using those files: they are only 32k long each. Something is wrong somewhere. Do you have that problem when you try to download the mol.deb files from that directory?

I already had mol files as follows:
mol_0.9.72-2_powerpc.deb
mol-kmods_0.9.72-2_powerpc.deb

and did a dpkg --install on them from my root Lenny partition booting from kernel 2.6.18

next, I ran molvconfig and set the screen modes...no problem there

But, when I run startmol --test I get the following

Mac-on-Linux 0.9.72 [Jän 25 2008 22:55]
Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Samuel Rydh

Loading Mac-on-Linux kernel module:

insmod: error inserting '/usr/lib/mol/0.9.72/modules/2.6.18/mol.ko': -1 Invalid module format
====================================================================
Failed to load the module - try recompiling the MOL kernel
module. Instructions (and information about common problems)
are available at .
====================================================================

This is all frighteningly familiar. Didn't I have to recompile the mol kernel modules to get it working last time.....oh why didn't I save all that stuff?

What do I do next then?

Just tried it for the mol* files and it works fine! The mol package with the kernel modules is indeed only ~32k in size.

Make sure you use both the v2.6.18 kernel and the mol files from the link above. I explicitly recompiled kernel and mol for you last time.

PS: please fix your quoting.

Well done on the CD. One thing to beware of. I tested a 10.4 DVD and Disk Utility exits after reading the disks. With OSX 10.3 CD1 I had no problem. Your setup may be okay.

Sounds right to me. Is this for a bare system? I also installed the MOL files on the desktop with a double click.

Also read here for my story on getting MoL installed and working. Also includes info on compiling but I may have given up on that by the looks of it. IIRC you have to locate and purge all MoL kernel modules from the system when installing a new version.

By the end of the 3rd page you may be amused at how frustrated I got.

Hi All,

I have compiled Mac-on-Linux with KVM support. And it works with the new 3.14.1 KVM A1-X1000 kernel.

I have tried to boot the install CD/DVD of Panther and Tiger. Unfortunately I see only the blue penguin and the activity indicator below.

Do you have any tips for me, please?

Console messages (Mac OS X Panther start):

@Geri

Okay, got my AmigaOne set up after my move and ready to start trying to get MOL working.

IIRC (and I may be wrong) I had to recompile the 2.6.18 kernel modules to get them to work with MOL last year when I did this. I am having the same problem now.....

I downloaded your 2.6.18 kernel and the two MOL .deb files and did a dpkg --install on my LENNY partition.
I boot up using kernel 2.6.18 and open a shell and type: startmol --test

Mac-on-Linux 0.9.73-SVN [Apr 24 2013 23:57]
Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Samuel Rydh
Starting MOL session 0
====================================================================
No mol-0.9.73 kernel modules corresponding to the running
2.6.18 kernel were found ('startmol --list' displays
installed version). Recompile the mol kernel modules (recommended)
or try starting MOL as root using the '-a' switch. The '-a'
flag can be made default by the 'allow_kver_mismatch: yes' setting.
====================================================================

So next I try this:

startmol --test -a
Mac-on-Linux 0.9.73-SVN [Apr 24 2013 23:57]
Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Samuel Rydh
Starting MOL session 0
Loading Mac-on-Linux kernel module:
/usr/lib/mol/0.9.73/modules/2.6.18-6-book3s-amigaone/mol.ko
insmod: error inserting '/usr/lib/mol/0.9.73/modules/2.6.18-6-book3s-amigaone/mol.ko': -1 Invalid module format
====================================================================
Failed to load the module - try recompiling the MOL kernel
module. Instructions (and information about common problems)
are available at .
====================================================================

So, yes, I will need to download the compiler and the compiler tools again and recompile the 2.6.18 kernel for MOL. As I recall, Geri you could not do it for me last year because you did not have easy access to an A1 machine at the time. I did all of that last year and got it working, but did not have a MAC OSX Tiger DVD at the time. Since then my 80 Gig drive with those Debian partitions got trashed, so now I need to start all over from scratch.

So, lets see if I remember: download the compiler, then the tools, then all the 2.6.18 source files...oh my.....

Scott

startmol --list

gives the following....

Available modules:
2.6.18-6-book3s-amigaone in /usr/lib/mol/0.9.73

@Geri

I have also tried installing the following:

linux-image-2.6.18-6-book3s-amigaone_2.6.18_powerpc.deb
gspca-modules-2.6.18-6-book3s-amigaone_01.00.04-2+2.6.18_powerpc.deb
unionfs-modules-2.6.18-6-book3s-amigaone_1.4+debian-4+2.6.18_powerpc.deb

and still get the same problems.

@Geri / Hypex

Okay, getting somewhere now. It turns out that there are several different 2.6.18 kernels, and I was booting using the old one named simply uImage-2.6.18 instead of the MOL one named uImage-2.6.18-book3s-amigaone
So I changed my a1boot.conf to use the uImage-2.6.18-boook3s-amigaone file to boot from and rebooted into Lenny.
Now, when I go to boot MOL from the CD using: startmol -X --cdboot (with my MAC DVD installed in the drive), I get the following:

startmol -X --cdboot

What do I need to do now?

okay, getting a little further...sort of....

I changed the molrc.osx file to comment out hda,hdb and sdb drives, since they are not used on my machine.
I then change the /dev/sda to /dev/sda14 -rw -force this is the partition I want MOL to use to install my OSX on.

When I run startmol, I get the following:

..then I wait for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then OSX will start to install. But I have not yet seen any destination devices to install OSX to! So the installer exits with a failure.

Any ideas?

@scabit

Hi. I've skimmed this thread a few notes.

1. From your last post error do you have the mac osx partition in the first 8gb of the HD? This is necessary iirc

2. As you found it compiling kernel mods are a major pain in the ass. Dont bother there are prepacked MOL files for Amiga 1. Botht he Pegxmac project had an A1 cd and Kurt Grach made a really nice package for A1 machines for "Mr Hardware" in Long Island when they were selling A1s look for those.

Any other questions let me know. I installed MOL on both peg 1, peg 2, and A1xeg4.

The best part of peg2 is that Altivec is supported.

Yes, 10.4 is much better than 10.3.

To people postulating on the speed of MOL its quite fast on G4 with altivec. I was surprised photoshop is totally usable and online is fast. windows move quick and things all in all not bad.

Wow! That's the first time I recall hearing about that! No, my sda14 partition that I intend to use for OSX is about 120G from the start of the drive.

Each time I try to install, the installer degrades a little, almost makes me think the DVD thinks it is pirated, although it is a "legal" valid Apple Inc DVD.

I have gotten to the point of selecting language, formatting a partition (as I said, sda14 is quite a ways up on the drive chain), accepting the licensing agreement from Apple, having the installer show me my formatted OSX partition (sda14), selecting it as my install device....then...nothing. After a while the installer just stops and exits.

Here is the only error I see....

Still getting nowhere trying to install OSX 10.4.6 Tiger from the original Apple DVD.

Can anyone else confirm that the MAC OSX partition needs to be in the first 8 gig of hard disk space for this to work? It will take me quite some effort to move all of my partitions around to make that happen, especially when it required 4.8 Gig to install, so I'll need a large partition.
I am wondering if the installer is trying to access the network to very the validity of the DVD before allowing me to install, and maybe that's where the first 20-30 minutes are spent each time I try it. Understand, once I get the penguin holding an apple screen. nothing happens for literally 20 minutes or more, then I get some DVD access and the little round animated progress indicator underneath the penguin, then after maybe 5 more minutes of that, I get a blue screen for several seconds, then the installer menu asking to select language comes up.
This is what happens every time. It takes FOREVER to try to get this installed, only to have it bail out for no apparent reason (see previous post) except SCSI memory errors....which are what the DVD drive uses - the "SCSI" bus. But the fact that it is loading and booting from the DVD shows it works....it is just failing at some point.
I have cleaned the DVD ... no change.
I have cleaned the DVD drive ... no change.
I have tried memory of both 128 and 256 as my molrc.osx default .... no change

any other ideas?

Scott

Good job. Did you have to patch together the source or other needed files? Last time I compiled it or rather tried I had to svn the code as the sf code was out of date and had to hack a png header as well IIRC. Not clean.

So, stating the obvious, but did you use movconfig and edit the /etc/mol config files before starting it?

AFAIK, MOL did't like G4 mode, so try switching AltiVec off in config. Another thing is that I don't think the author had MOL working on G5 or compiled for it. So if you can try compiling it for 32-bit only. Okay that may be hard.

@scabit

I have the same problem. I have waited 2 hours but Mac OS X didn't boot. I saw only the penguin and the activity indicator below.

I have tested it with Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger. I installed Jaguar with PearPC (Windows PC) in a img file last week. And it works on QEMU without KVM.

But it doesnt boot with KVM on QEMU. Linux-PPC works very well on QEMU with KVM enabled.

I think, Mac OS X don't like KVM.

@Hypex

I didn't need to patch Mac-on-Linux. I downloaded it via svn and compiled it with KVM support. I switched AltiVec off in config but without any success. MOL is a 32-bit binary. But, what does "32-bit only" mean?

file /usr/local/bin/mol*

Quote:

/usr/local/bin/mol-img: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or cisco 4500, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, BuildID[sha1]=26fec38beb93ac3deb500ad3d8f08bde78d5512a, not stripped
/usr/local/bin/molrcget: symbolic link to `/usr/local/lib/mol/0.9.73/bin/molrcget'
/usr/local/bin/molvconfig: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or cisco 4500, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, BuildID[sha1]=cfe14810b52a6de07365646e8b77ca3ab3fbcdd8, stripped

@scabit

It looks like when I jump on at night there is already one post and four others following it before I've had the chance to see it.

First, the 8GB limit. This is an old one. My Mac volume sits 40GB into the drive. It's only 5GB big, 10GB is best, like Linux.

Next, did you run molvconfig? Looks like you have edited your /etc/mol config files now.

This guide may help. Looks like you found how to specify OSX volume.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacOnLinuxHowto

I set the OSX RAM to half my memory, 1GB in my case. Leave space for Linux.

Turn off AltiVec in config. Never seen this work on A1.

The delay at start is not good. MOL should load OSX off DVD once it starts reading it straight away.

I found I had trouble trying to install OSX 10.4 off DVD as it would read my disk and then shut down Disk Utility. Perhaps you are getting similar error. You could try setting up a HD parttion and image the DVD onto it using OS4 RawDisk.

Check my thread for all the preblems I had! Expecially my last post.

It means, the X1000 is a 64-bit computer running a 64-bit kernel, so I thought that may affect the build. Or even the running of the program. Given it is quite technical, possibly remaps memory and uses ASM in parts.

If it can be made to work on a G5 Mac Under the same build of Ubuntu, that can be crossed out. Subject to the Mac and X1000 kernel being similar enough. With regards to KVM also.

I have compiled MOL with KVM support on Lubuntu 12.04.4. But Mac OS X Jaguar doesn't boot. :(
