"Meanwhile, Nvidia said it is partnering with IBM to deliver GPU-accelerated versions of IBM enterprise applications on its Power Systems portfolio.
The collaboration aims to enable IBM customers to more rapidly process, secure and analyse massive volumes of streaming data, and builds on the firm’s announcement in August of the OpenPower Consortium to drive broader data centre adoption of its Power architecture.
“This partnership will bring supercomputer performance to the corporate data centre, expanding the use of GPU accelerators well beyond the traditional supercomputing and technical computing markets,” said Ian Buck, vice president of Accelerated Computing at Nvidia."
Hope we can expect Power based solution for GPU acceleration?
https://www.power.org/media-coverage/altera-brings-fpga-based-acceleration-to-ibm-power-systems-and-announces-support-for-openpower-consortium/
"Altera Brings FPGA-based Acceleration to IBM Power Systems and Announces Support for OpenPOWER Consortium"
"Additionally, Altera intends to join the OpenPOWER Consortium, an open development alliance which makes the IBM Power architecture available for open collaboration and development. Altera will work with IBM and other founding alliance members to develop advanced server, networking and storage applications that utilize Altera FPGA acceleration technologies and advanced design tools."
It's seems that the open consortium is growing up....

| so as alot of POWER heavy metal runs linux, does this mean we could possibly have open source nvidia gfx drivers? depending on the licence its released with. _________________ Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

This isn't about graphics, it about GPGPU OpenCL style processing. And p-Series primarily uses AIX.

Doesn't really make sense to make full blown GFX driver for cards which don't have any kind of output for monitors... |

To my understanding IBM recently announced that they invest USD 1 billion to open source development for Power architecture and AIX is outside of that scope.
And it's true that latest announcements about nvidia+power is about OpenCL stuff, but IBM also invests in Gallium 3D development and that is about GPU.
btw... I saw funny announcements of my favourite local computer shop. They sell dualhead quadcore nvidia GPU for EUR5000+, I presume it's main use would be 3D cad where also OpenCL is used.... So power8+Tesla = a lot of EUR. (they were also selling monitors that cost EUR 40 000, suddenly my hobbies look ultra cheap...) _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

Now when companies can buy (more easily?) other ISA (licences?) than just ARM or MIPS, the embedded industry might see some change again. (and it's nice to see that it's going well with the sales of QorIQ chips, 140% growth last year)
Perhaps freescale QorIQ chips see also new competition from some new PPC manufacturer. (hard to believe we see PPC in phones, though) Last edited by KimmoK on 20-Feb-2014 at 12:25 PM.

| @SKOLMAN_MWS,
I'm almost sold. SIMD unit? didn't see one. Then again, with that many cores who cares.
Hack one and port it!

Interesting. Monster of gaming device.
But: -Surprice if Nintendo starts to fight with performance. -Understandable for Power crew if they desided to fight back (gaming is a big market) -AMD/ATI vs Nvidia... interesting if the system has GPGPU from ATI ... as OpenPower is with Nvidia -The design so far would seems too expensive, like original PS4/xboxone rumors. -IIRC, Power8 has 12 threads on every core ... so I would expect this 8 core gaming CPU to appear with less multithreading (96 CPU threads used in game ??? no way.) -would be fun to see power8 based HW for us normal mortals, though.
What if nintendo would open their next design for any HW manufacturer to produce? Would it be possible?

| @KimmoK,
Would love to see some slots on there. Run the OS and Runin UAE on Hammer and use Jumpman for a graphics station with it own graphics card, add 2 monitors and you have a monster AmigaOS Graphics station. Maybe even get a modern Toaster to work in there.

Those specs are obviously made up from thin air...
Fusion DS sounds half beliavabke, but Fusion terminal... Too much power and heat for a console. _________________

| @WolfToTheMoon,
Info was in 2 different places. One can only wait and see. Maybe the other one is a console and this one is the size of a home theater receiver?

And another of those stories mentioned other as source...

True dat. GPU is literally faster than TITAN and with those specs we are in +300Watt territory. Not to mention that full blown Power CPU's are not known about being power efficient :)
If that actually happens it will be strong contender on market where customer is looking for console with ~$1500 price tag and acoustic properties of 747 on take off.
