guruman: Thanks for the report ! I really appreciate it and ... its content, I feel good seeing that people from various parts came, discussed and shared this week-end together.
Too bad it was not possible for me to attend.

Secondly, MorphOS drivers are faster than Gallium so Gallium is not optimal for underpowered Sam460 or slow G4 based machines.

Source for such claim?

Is there a proof that Gallium 3D driver is faster than MorphOS driver?

Actually, r300 drivers in Gallium are only experimental. Of course, in the future we can perhaps benchmark Gallium 3D drivers vs MorphOS 3D drivers on ACube's hardware =P

@itix

I would look forward to the Gallium3D, become available to the vertex and pixel shaders!

Then I'll take #13 and #14 and possibly move this part of the conversation to http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=38301&forum=33#723720

If I could get the r300 3D driver to work in Linux I'd compare Gallium vs MorphOS on my PowerBook or G5.

@TheDaddy
You are welcome.
As for pictures, I'll take it on hold for the "final report".

@Kyle
Credits given to you as well. Sorry, my bad.
I hope next time we can go together. I personally think Pianeta Amiga should be hosted inside "Lucca Comics&Games" next time. This year we had over 200.000 attendances!!!

That is a great idea...you should suggest it to ACube (Enrico).
And Lucca is one of my favourite Italian cities...although Bologna is pretty cool too.

Source for such claim?

This "claim" is what Frank Mariak and Mark Olsen told us already more than 3 years ago at the Amiga Meeting Nord in Bad Bramstedt. They were asked because at that time Gallium had been integrated in AROS and was announced for AmigaOS 4.x, and they said that they keep an eye on it but as long as it doesn't perform better than their own drivers, it is a no-go. I don't know how they do their comparisons, though.
To elaborate a bit, I have been told during last Pianeta Amiga that a full driver takes a bunch of full days of work, not a lot more than adapting existing drivers/stacks, and now that a new infrastructure has been rewritten for MorphOS 3.x, adding newer families after R300 is not so difficult. The main problem being that the programmers do not have full days to dedicate to MorphOS, except during holidays...

As an additional information, rzookol is a MorphOS team member, so I think his sources are the same I have. He is also responsible of the integration of CUPS drivers support in MorphOS (via Reggae encoders/decoders), so I would say he is not at all against nice integration of technologies coming from the open source world. But only if they add something to the OS, in terms of performance, features, experience.

Kind regards,
Andrea

By the way, I have added a few pics here.
Nothing breathtaking, actually "more of the same". Still, I hope you enjoy them if you chose to take a look.

Kind regards,
Andrea

I did my own research about Gallium3D R300 driver and it seems rzookol was right. Even last version didn´t reach above 1/3 of Catalyst performance.

However, R600 driver is much more mature. 85 % of Catalyst speed with support for OpenGL 2.x/3.x features. Worth to consider.

I guess we already did. I spent almost 2 entire days in Lucca this time together with Davide (os4games.it and Bitplane) and we shared the same feeling.

Bologna of course is a very cool town but we were thinking about the outrageous number of people that Lucca Comics hosts from all over the world. It's a matter of spreading the word.

@guruman
Thanks m8! Appreciate it.
