I dont understand why the OS4 team just doesnt use PPC Mac hardware like we get to use for MorphOS. Its made things so amazing with MorphOS, and we have lap tops that run awesome too now because of it.

Im about to get a key for this ibook I got for nearly free. ITs a 1.42Ghz model and it runs surprisingly well.

Back to the subject of the thread though. I dont think an emulator is a good option. A better one would be to start one that pays for x86 full conversion of the OS. Ive messed with AROS and it seems that its a perfectly viable option if it was done full on by both MOS and AOS teams.

Granted you run into the problems of countless hardware configurations to deal with, but picking some standard configurations and chipsets would be a start.

Emulation on x86 makes sense - eg. on portable devices with longer battery life than 8 years old iBooks/PowerBooks.

There are new batteries available. Running 5 hours on battery with aPowerbook/ibook is pretty possible. Not too easy to get more battery time with a new laptop and a cpu demanding emulator.

Generally I would welcome MorphOS on emulation.

@Zylesea

Where can I find a battery that lasts 5hrs on a PowerBook?

The only batteries for the A1138 on eBay UK are 6-cell 4400 mAh ones that give about 1.5 to 2hrs usage and start dying after a few months.

@A500Fan

I would only donate to a bounty that modified QEMU or Dolphin to fully emulate a Pegasos II with a JIT CPU core.

Alternatively, I like Kronos' idea of an Amithlon style emulation for MorphOS.

@Acill

I think they did the right thing for desktop Sam440/Sam460 and X1000 hardware. Do granite a future for future hardware designs.

But in retrospective I have to agree, that they should have supported mac laptops, as there does not same to be anyone make any new laptops, there is no competing laptop hardware market to hurt.

They don't use it now because it would damage Acube and A-EON. Why they didn't before Acube and A-EON started making PPC hardware I don't know.

neither of two produce laptops, though.

@A500Fan

I would donate to such a thing, but only if it DID run OS4. I have two reasons to be interested in such a thing.

1. Laptop for OS4. If they are not going to support old PPC iBooks/PowerBooks, then emulation is the likely only alternative to a portable Next-Gen Amiga.

2. Debugging. Similar to how some developers use WinUAE to get a very detailed view of what's happening. While I do have an old JTAG debugger for a 74xx series, and am trying to save up for a bdi3000, sometimes having a virtual rig can be more convenient that a pile of hardware tethered to a particular desk.

What exactly does AOS4 or MorphOS offer what couldn't be just ported over to x86?
I mean if you say seamless 68k compatibility for Workbench apps using RTG... hmm...
Maybe this can be just added to AROS. (build in, not like JanusUAE coherency - which has also custom chip emulation)

Anything else is can be just ported over. In last time i got the feeling that new open source ports where made first for AROS than MOS than AOS.

So long story short:
Port Ambient, help me to define this bounty:suggestion , and you are done.

There could be a AROS distro called AmigaOS, a AROS Distro called MorphOS
Each with its own charm but at least using the same base (so they are more or less forced to work together... while committing updates)

@phoenixkonsole

AROS needs too much work to be comparable with AmigaOS4 or MorphOS.

@pavlor
this is a lie!
MorphOS maybe, maybe not. I own a SAM so i may be allowed to moan as a customer of AmigaOS. It is no way better than a stable AROS build. No way.

EDIT:
It is the opposite:
3D is worse on AOS
Wifi is worse on AOS
general HW compatibility is worse (dedicated HW which isn't supported is not dedicated HW! )
and so on and so forth
Is sound supported if it crackles?

The most exiting time with AOS was the waiting time for my first "AOS4-machine"... excitement pure excitement .... really guys! powering it on the first time was a really good feeling... pure excitement and happiness BUT as i managed to crash it in the first minute because i ....wait.. i don't even know why it crashed.. my excitement is gone and i can't say that it is a benchmark for AROS in any way. Sorry.

Does AROS support Radion HD cards, don't lie.

Again the same drivers exists for AOS as the ones for AROS.

A-cube system has explained what was wrong any probably fix it for if you send it back for repair.
Some models did not have a 0 Ohm resistor, its documented you can fix it your self easily aslo.

Well did you read the grim repair?, you see what program that crashed, and get a stack trace, telling you where it crashed in program code, it easy to see what crashed and where it crashed.

If video crashes you get crash log on a serial cable. It not hard at all get a crash log, Its way easier to understand the crash then Guru mediation for example.

Yep. I replaced the ATI HD card with a 9250 to get 3D acceleration.

No but AOS4 doesn't either! I was talking about 3D support.
AROS has 3D with a lot of Nvidia cards. Which AOS doesn't do.
AROS AOS4 1:0

Sure done by a AROS dev and done on AROS first
AROS vs AOS4 2:0

Ok sound maybe fixed. How is sound on X1000? Does it crackle ; )

I appreciate your support but i you need to agree that if someone has a grim reaper AOS doesn't become the "bad unfinished OS" as AROS is called. Which is not true.

The truth is that AROS is also available as daily snapshots because it is under development. Some days they are stable at some days not.

As of right now, 3D on OS4 stops at Radeon9200 ......

If there would be demand we could have had them on AROS:
http://www.syntaxsociety.se/~bearsoft/

We have at least 2d and 3d acceleration with Nvidia ; )

Personally, I'd be happier with a PPC plugin for WinUAE. It would be great to run PowerUP/WarpOS software in a stable AmigaOS3 environment without the need to invest in failing 15 year old PPC accelerator H/W.
