Spectre660 updated the ubuntu MATE 16.04 PowerPC ramdisk for the 4.4.3 kernel as well as the 4.1.18 Kernel.

Download: initrd-4.1.18_ubuntu-mate_16.04-ppc64-2.gz (I propose to download it with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)

This ramdisk is for the AmigaONE X1000.

@xeno74

Does this new ramdisk require a new install or is there an easier way?

I did remove my r9 270 & replaced it with my 4850, but that didn't help with 16.04, still hangs on the low gfx error, my 12.04 CD did boot again. Searching the web, I see this is a common problem on Intel systems as well.

@sundown

Yes, this ramdisk is only for installing ubuntu MATE 16.04. You could try it with your Radeon HD4850 if you like.

Didn't see any advantage to leaving it in, so put the 270 back in. If I can't get 16 working, I might put the 4850 back in & re-install 12 onto the new drive. For the moment I'll just keep the 16 install in case you guys figure out a way to get me going. Are other r9 270 users having booting problems? If that new ramdisk installed the xorg.conf file, I'd try it.

I do appreciate any & all help so far

@sundown

It would appear that most other users who attempted to install before the last two ramdisks managed to manually install an xorg.conf. Thus no feedback from any X1000 user thus far.
There should be no problem with the R9-270 and the 4.4.3 kernel . An X5000 owner has installed ok using the X5000 version of the ramdisk and an R7-265 which uses the same chipset as the R9-270. Note that the 4.4.3 kernel is configured for video cards from HD7000 and up so wont work with your HD4850 . The 4.1.18 kernel will though .

@Spectre660

What's the issue with XCore not being able to configure the card itself?

@Spectre660 & xeno74

I tried a new install with the new ramdisk, but it failed to boot. I gave up on 16.04 & re-installed 12.04 on the new drive. Took 30 min vs vs 90-180 min & it boots with my 270 card & kernel 4.4.3-jm.

I would like to thank both of you for supporting me all the same. This is the way the Amiga community should always be here, helping each other, not fighting each other.

@sundown

Nevertheless many thanks for testing.

Did you install Ubuntu 12.04 with the A-EON Live Remix DVD and the kernel 4.4.3?

@All

New week, new RC.

New:

- Linux 4.5-rc6 Kernel Released -- phoronix
- Linux Git log
- New Nemo patch 4.5-8

Download: vmlinux-4.5-rc6-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz

Today, I tested QEMU/KVM with the RC6 on ubuntu MATE 16.04 PowerPC. I successfully booted the Beta 1 of Lubuntu 16.04 PowerPC on a virtual Power Mac G3.

I did use the a-eon live dvd, but it only boots with the 4850. After the install, I put the r9 270 back in & 12 boots fine with the 4.4.3 kernel. I did copy the 12.04 live dvd to a partition & copied over a working 4.x kernel, then burned another disk, but no joy with the 270 card. Its not that I just gave up on 16.04, I spent a good 2 weeks trying different things, but it was much easier to get 12.04 on a non-failing HD.

I know another with the same card in an x1000 that might try the 16.04 install, be nice to know if it works for him or not.

I also noticed that with the 4850, 12 booted quietly, but with the 270, CFE was very vebose with startup info.

@sundown

The problem with Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 and the X1000 may be that the Xorg.conf needs to be configured differently for the HD7000, R7 and R9 Series . Still trying to investigate.

@tlosm

With all do respects, I don't need 16.04, it was an interesting experiment. Its been deleted & I'm back to 12.04, which does everything I need. If you guys ever get it working on a dvd like 12.04, I might try it again. Two hour net installs are not fun if it doesn't boot after.

@all

I don't want to discourage anyone from supporting this effort, its my h/w thats the problem with booting 16.04, not to mention that I'm a linux dummy.

Spectre660 has released a new installation initrd for testing.

Download: initrd-4.1.18-4.4.3_ubuntu-mate_16.04-ppc64-3.gz (I propose to download it with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)

This new installation initrd also works only with the 4.4.3 kernel as well as the 4.1.18 kernel.

@All

Please test the new installation initrd with Radeons HD7xxx and newer.

Does this mean someone with a 5450 shouldn't try?

@sundown

i can say for sure one thing. lasted distros on ppc increase much more the performance in xorg
about 45% more in video rendering 2d and in 3D and for users with 7xxx oldest distro will be a bottle neck.
in any way it is a personal choice
i dont think with last kernels only you will fix the 7xxxx issues on 12.04.
for sure with fbdev only you will be able to have x up and running.

L.

Of course you can try it with your Radeon HD5450. You can get hardware 3D acceleration with this graphics card.

FYI: There is an issue with the downloaded components while the installation of ubuntu MATE with the initrds. Spectre660 will release some installation ISOs. These ISOs will have the correct working components for installing ubuntu MATE 16.04.

@xeno74

Due to changes in the net installer for now we need to install the base system from DVD.

New installer and installation method with this Lubuntu DVD installer ramdisk.
Only install the base system and the default software selection of Standard system utilities .
The installer should also install the xorg.conf .
Alternately you can install Lubuntu desktop as well from the software options to test if the xorg.conf issue
is resolved for you. It will install Lubuntu Desktop from the DVD.
Ubuntu-Mate Desktop can be installed after with the method below .

http://www.xenosoft.de/initrd-4.1.18-4.4.3_Lubuntu_16.04-ppc64-CD1.gz

Works with 4.1.18 and 4.4.3-jm kernels

You need to download and burn the lubuntu alternate installer iso . will have to burn to DVD
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily/current/xenial-alternate-powerpc.iso

once you reboot into the newly installed the base system install the Ubuntu-Mate from a terminal .
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-core ubuntu-mate-desktop
the Ubuntu-Mate will be installed via the internet.
once installed reboot .
