Hi All,
Spectre660 has recently released an img for a USB pen drive with a Ubuntu 16.04 base installation. This img is for all AmigaONEs.
Download: Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img.7z
@Spectre660: Many thanks for this img. It's really small.
I will try it out today. First, I will install the Lubuntu desktop. After that I will try to install the ubuntu MATE desktop. I am looking forward to my installation party.
Have a nice day.
Cheers,
Christian

I can't get it to work on my XE. Does it work on the 500?

Copy it with dd on Linux or with the USB image Tool on Windows to a USB flash drive. |
Why is it we still can't do these things with OS4? Shame. |

| This boots from USB on the Sam460ex for anyone who requested some kind of live option in the past. Anyone want to try on a Sam440ep-flex or Sam440ep .
In order to boot the flash drive some Uboot variables have to be set. These can be set from AmigaOS 4.1 with the nvsetvar command . The variables for the Sam460ex are :
nvsetvar bootargs="console ttys0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/sdb2 rootdelay=10" nvsetvar lboot="ext2load usb 0:3 1000000 uImage-460;ext2load usb 0:3 2000000 sam460.dtb;bootm 1000000 - 2000000"
The variables for the Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex should be :
nvsetvar bootargs="console ttys0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/sdb2 rootdelay=10" nvsetvar lboot="ext2load usb 0:3 500000 cuImage-440;bootm"
to boot from the Uboot shell the command would be
run lboot

I tried this, took a long time to burn to a slow usb stick, but in the end, it booted my x1000 with the r9 270 gfx card, first time with 16.04 for me. However, upon opening the amigaone icon, I get a system error warning. Mate seems to work after I cancel it, not sure if the "report" button would help you guys. I tried kernel 4.3.3 & 4.1.19, same error with both.

Of course you can do that with AOS4. Just use Utilities/RawDisk.

Works perfectly from AmigaOS 4.1 .
Use 7za to extract .img from the .7z archive. http://amiga.sourceforge.net/?showpackage=p7zip . I had to use MediaToolbox to Install the USB thumbdrive before the rawdisk copy.
rawdisk from Data:Downloads/Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img to usb0:

I must be doing something seriously wrong. When trying to boot from my 16GB thumb drive with Ubuntu-Mate_16.04-X1000.NI.img dd'ed on it didn't even come close to working, I took a look at the thumb drive with GParted and found out it didn't recognize the file system. So I reformatted it as Ext4 with Disk Utility, dd'ed the image file to it again, as /dev/sdd1, and tried booting from it again. Strange error messages which I carefully wrote down but can't find now.
Checking again now, GParted says, Partition: /dev/sde1 (what happened to /dev/ssd?), exclamation point in a red circle, File System: [black square] unknown. (Those two items are the same with AOS4 partitions.)
Disk Utility agrees that the file system of 15GB /dev/sde1 is unknown, with a partition type of W95 FAT32(LBA)(0x0c), and a Partition Flag of Bootable.
/dev/sde is an ADATA USB Flash Drive with Master Boot Record (= ?) partitioning.
How can I make the drive work (hopefully as /dev/sdd)? I just tried to reformat the drive, but no good: The daemon is being inhibited. Same with trying to format the volume which was easy yesterday. Last edited by kilaueabart on 18-Mar-2016 at 03:02 AM.

This sound like your usb stick may have a hard error or there was an error on writing the image. The Amigaone icon is just a small FAT16 partition with kernels and should just open to show them when clicked on.

I wouldn't be surprised if the stick had a problem. I have 2 new usb sticks coming next week & I will try again with one. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

| @xeno74 I've been testing Ubuntu-Mate_16.04-X1000-NI.img.7z with interesting results, although it doesn't work yet.
I recopied the uncompressed image to my flash drive partition /dev/sde2, which I had successfully reformatted as ext4 (wondering what had become of the sdd1 partition I had previously used).
The subsequent boot had me a bit excited, until under the two penguins, I got this Kernel panic: "Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)." There was a bit of core dump the first line of which was "[c00000007a... (can't read my handwriting)] [c00000000009c0ba4] dump stack+0x9a/0xc8 (unreliable)," which I cite just in case that "unreliable" is significant.
Another line that may or may not mean something: "CPU: 1 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 4.1.18_A-EON_AmigaONE_X1000_Nemo #1."
Should I try to replace that kernel with the 4.1.17 version?
I tried again, just in case, and got the same results.
Next, I re-examined the drive with GParted and Disk Utility in my 12.04 install, and found that /dev/sde had reverted to /dev/sdd! So I tried launching the MATE 16.04 image again from its proper address, but I still end up with the same kernel panic. Anything obvious that I should try next?
By the way, something else that seems odd to me. /dev/sdd has three "Volumes" in use (plus 7.4 GB Free): AMIGAONE 105 MB FAT, Ubuntu_16.04 7.5 GB ext4, and Sam4xx 105 MB ext2. I just took a look at AMIGAONE from AOS4 desktop, and it contains: Directory "AMIGAONE:" on Friday 18-Mar-16 cyrus-4.4.4-jm.config 116285 ----rwed 04-Mar-16 09:47:08 uImage-tabor_onboard_video 6757036 ----rwed 07-Mar-16 11:22:44 cyrus_5020.dtb 30072 ----rwed 10-Feb-16 20:33:40 tabor-4.1.19-JM.config 105872 ----rwed 07-Mar-16 11:29:30 tabor2.dtb 13124 ----rwed 23-May-15 18:10:10 .Trash-1000 Dir ---arwed 09-Mar-16 20:38:50 uImage-tabor 6752003 ----rwed 07-Mar-16 11:30:28 uImage-cyrus 8259763 ----rwed 04-Mar-16 06:11:52 vmlinux-nemo 17847312 ----rwed 05-Mar-16 16:37:28 tabor-4.1.19-JM.onboard_video.config 105861 ----rwed 07-Mar-16 11:21:22 nemo_4.4.4-jm-1.config 99365 ----rwed 05-Mar-16 16:28:56 10 files - 38M bytes - 1 directory - 78341 blocks used
I have no idea what that stuff is or how it got there. Last edited by kilaueabart on 19-Mar-2016 at 01:31 AM.

The images has 3 partitions. You would normally copy to the begining of USB device eg /dev/sdd. In your case it looks like you have copied to the second partition /dev/sdd2 . This would mean that the root partition on the USB thumb drive may now be /dev/sdd3 You would have set your bootrargs to boot from /dev/sdd3 or redo the copy and copy to /dev/sdd in which case you should have dev/sdd2 as the root partition.
