@Spectre660

Many thanks! I uploaded the new initrd:
initrd-4.1.18-4.4.3_Lubuntu_16.04-ppc64-CD1.gz (I propose to download it with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)

PLEASE PLEASE test the new initrd.

Hi All,

Spectre660 has recently released an img for a USB pen drive with a Ubuntu 16.04 base installation. This img is for all AmigaONEs.

Download: Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img.7z

@Spectre660: Many thanks for this img. It's really small.

I will try it out today. First, I will install the Lubuntu desktop. After that I will try to install the ubuntu MATE desktop. I am looking forward to my installation party.

Have a nice day.

Cheers,

Christian

@Fogg_80

Here you are:

Installation instructions

1. Download the image from the following link: Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img.7z
2. Decompress the downloaded image with 7-Zip
3. Copy it with dd on Linux or with the USB image Tool on Windows to a USB flash drive.

For example with Linux:

Quote:
dd if=Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img of=disk drive ID

In my case /dev/sdh:

Quote:
dd if=Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img of=/dev/sdh

4. The ROOT partition is very small (1.8GB). You can increase it with GParted if you like. I have a 64GB USB flash drive. I increased the ROOT partition to 58.36GB.

5. Turn on the AmigaONE X1000 and press F to enter the CFE prompt. Insert the USB flash drive.

6. Next enter the following at the CFE> prompt (pressing enter after each line):

Quote:
setenv bootargs "root=the_ROOT_partition_on_your_usb_flash_drive quiet ro splash rootdelay=5"

I booted my X1000 with Debian before and I saw that the ROOT partition on the USB flash drive is /dev/sdd2.

In my case:

Quote:
setenv bootargs "root=/dev/sdd2 quiet ro splash rootdelay=5"

I use the stable longterm kernel 4.1.18 on my CF card to boot Ubuntu 16.04 on the USB flash drive. You can use an other kernel if you like.

Quote:
boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-4.1

Quote:

Ubuntu Xenial Xerus (development branch) Amigaone tty1

Amigaone login:

7. The login details are as follows:

Username of amigaone has the password amigaone

8. Please configure your network interface with DHCP with the following command:

Quote:
sudo dhclient network_device
You can figure out the correct network interface with /sbin/ifconfig -a.

In my case:

Quote:
sudo dhclient enp6s5

9. I installed the Lubuntu desktop with the following commands:

Quote:
sudo apt-get update

Quote:
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
- [this will take some time to complete depending on the speed of your internet connection]

10. After that shutdown your AmigaONE X1000 with:

Quote:
sudo halt

We need a xorg.conf on this system so we have to copy zappa2009's radeon xorg.conf file to /etc/X11 on the ROOT partition of the USB flash drive with an other system.

Quote:
cp X.org.conf/Xorg.conf.radeon /media/_your_username_/_disk_id_of_the_partition_on_the_USB_flash_drive_/etc/X11/xorg.conf

11. Turn on the AmigaONE X1000 and press F to enter the CFE prompt. Insert the USB flash drive.

12. Next enter the following at the CFE> prompt (pressing enter after each line):

Quote:
setenv bootargs "root=the_ROOT_partition_on_your_usb_flash_drive quiet ro splash rootdelay=5"

In my case:

Quote:
setenv bootargs "root=/dev/sdd2 quiet ro splash rootdelay=5"

Quote:
boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-4.1

13. The Lubuntu login screen appears. Please login.

Username of amigaone has the password amigaone

Here you are.

Why is it we still can't do these things with OS4? Shame.

This boots from USB on the Sam460ex for anyone who requested some kind of live option in the past.
Anyone want to try on a Sam440ep-flex or Sam440ep .

In order to boot the flash drive some Uboot variables have to be set.
These can be set from AmigaOS 4.1 with the nvsetvar command .
The variables for the Sam460ex are :

nvsetvar bootargs="console ttys0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/sdb2 rootdelay=10"
nvsetvar lboot="ext2load usb 0:3 1000000 uImage-460;ext2load usb 0:3 2000000 sam460.dtb;bootm 1000000 - 2000000"

The variables for the Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex should be :

nvsetvar bootargs="console ttys0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/sdb2 rootdelay=10"
nvsetvar lboot="ext2load usb 0:3 500000 cuImage-440;bootm"

to boot from the Uboot shell the command would be

run lboot

Hi All,

I have really good news for you. Spectre660 released two new ubuntu MATE 16.04 images for the AmigaONE X1000 yesterday.

I think I have to buy a PCIe USB3 card for my AmigaONE X1000.

Ubuntu-Mate_16.04-X1000-NI.img.7z

X1000 -Southern Island Graphics Cards (HD7000 ,R7 and R9):

Ubuntu-Mate_16.04-X1000-SI.img.7z

PLEASE test these images.

I tried this, took a long time to burn to a slow usb stick, but in the end, it booted my x1000 with the r9 270 gfx card, first time with 16.04 for me.
However, upon opening the amigaone icon, I get a system error warning. Mate seems to work after I cancel it, not sure if the "report" button would help you guys. I tried kernel 4.3.3 & 4.1.19, same error with both.

More testing, http://oi66.tinypic.com/30n9pxf.jpg

Of course you can do that with AOS4. Just use Utilities/RawDisk.

@tonyw & Hypex

Works perfectly from AmigaOS 4.1 .

Use 7za to extract .img from the .7z archive.
http://amiga.sourceforge.net/?showpackage=p7zip .
I had to use MediaToolbox to Install the USB thumbdrive before the rawdisk copy.

rawdisk from Data:Downloads/Amigaone_Ubuntu_16.04-Base-1.img to usb0:

@xeno74

I must be doing something seriously wrong. When trying to boot from my 16GB thumb
drive with Ubuntu-Mate_16.04-X1000.NI.img dd'ed on it didn't even come close to working,
I took a look at the thumb drive with GParted and found out it didn't recognize the file
system. So I reformatted it as Ext4 with Disk Utility, dd'ed the image file to it again, as
/dev/sdd1, and tried booting from it again. Strange error messages which I carefully wrote
down but can't find now.

Checking again now, GParted says, Partition: /dev/sde1 (what happened to /dev/ssd?),
exclamation point in a red circle, File System: [black square] unknown. (Those two items
are the same with AOS4 partitions.)

Disk Utility agrees that the file system of 15GB /dev/sde1 is unknown, with a partition
type of W95 FAT32(LBA)(0x0c), and a Partition Flag of Bootable.

/dev/sde is an ADATA USB Flash Drive with Master Boot Record (= ?) partitioning.

How can I make the drive work (hopefully as /dev/sdd)? I just tried to reformat the drive,
but no good: The daemon is being inhibited. Same with trying to format the volume which
was easy yesterday.

@sundown

This sound like your usb stick may have a hard error or there was an error on writing the image.
The Amigaone icon is just a small FAT16 partition with kernels and should just open to show them when clicked on.

I wouldn't be surprised if the stick had a problem. I have 2 new usb sticks coming next week & I will try again with one.

@xeno74
I've been testing Ubuntu-Mate_16.04-X1000-NI.img.7z with interesting results, although it doesn't work yet.

I recopied the uncompressed image to my flash drive partition /dev/sde2, which I had successfully reformatted
as ext4 (wondering what had become of the sdd1 partition I had previously used).

The subsequent boot had me a bit excited, until under the two penguins, I got this Kernel panic: "Unable to
mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)." There was a bit of core dump the first line of which was "[c00000007a...
(can't read my handwriting)] [c00000000009c0ba4] dump stack+0x9a/0xc8 (unreliable)," which I cite just in case
that "unreliable" is significant.

Another line that may or may not mean something: "CPU: 1 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted
4.1.18_A-EON_AmigaONE_X1000_Nemo #1."

Should I try to replace that kernel with the 4.1.17 version?

I tried again, just in case, and got the same results.

Next, I re-examined the drive with GParted and Disk Utility in my 12.04 install, and found that /dev/sde had
reverted to /dev/sdd! So I tried launching the MATE 16.04 image again from its proper address, but I still end up
with the same kernel panic. Anything obvious that I should try next?

By the way, something else that seems odd to me. /dev/sdd has three "Volumes" in use (plus 7.4 GB Free):
AMIGAONE 105 MB FAT, Ubuntu_16.04 7.5 GB ext4, and Sam4xx 105 MB ext2. I just took a look at AMIGAONE from
AOS4 desktop, and it contains:
Directory "AMIGAONE:" on Friday 18-Mar-16

@kilaueabart

The images has 3 partitions.
You would normally copy to the begining of USB device eg /dev/sdd.
In your case it looks like you have copied to the second partition /dev/sdd2 .
This would mean that the root partition on the USB thumb drive may now be /dev/sdd3
You would have set your bootrargs to boot from /dev/sdd3 or redo the copy and copy to /dev/sdd in which case you should have dev/sdd2 as the root partition.
