| Nobody ever talks about OS 4.2. Is it dead? People have given up trying to get any information. The longer it takes to deliver it the more irrelevant it becomes. Soon it won't matter to anybody. _________________ X5000 / microA1(OS4.1 FE U2) / CodeBench / Imagine / Blender Lightwave 2019 / Microsoft Visual C++ |

Like it make any sense to wait for 4.2 ? I mean, you can call 4.1 as 4.2 now, it will be the same. Or you probably think 4.2 will have "SMP" support ?:) Then of course no. Even if they will say so, all it can be, just some crappy kind-of-smp, which only specially compiled programms can use => no much sense. Or you wait gallium ?:) But it also make no sense anymore , there is w3_nova.
I mean, even if 4.2 will be released ever (if), it will give you nothing which can so much radically change anything :)

No, it just hasn't been born yet. It's conceived, but is growing through a long pregnancy. Let's hope when it's time for OS4.2 to be delivered that it isn't stillborn and the parents are still alive. I still hope it's born. Last edited by Hypex on 07-May-2017 at 03:34 PM.

Honestly, how long did you wait for OS4 to be finalized? 4.2's goal are set quite a bit higher than a basic PPC port of OS3.X.
So, will it ever happen? Its probably more likely than an OS5.0. |

Priest: Let AOS4.2 your servant be born again from the Tripos, as you were. Bless him with Stability, bless him with Speed, bless him with SMP.
Response: What is dead may never die. Priest: What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger.

"R.I.P"?
I don't think it's that easy. If it were possible to kill this OS, it would have happened long ago, and many times between then and now.
This is the OS that simply won't die.
And about release dates, why worry? I'd much rather spend my time enjoying the OS that is in front of me today than to feel loss over what isn't here yet.
I get no value from what is not ready yet. I get LOTS from what I have here in front of me.
Sure, I could make a list of things I'd like to have, or that were expected to arrive by now, but what is there to gain in that? What I have already is a pretty incredible system. It's fun to work with, it's fun to play with, and it just "feels right", which I can't seem to get from Windows in any flavor.
So I'll take my value in using what we have. Others will probably rather make lists of what we don't have. I hope they have as much fun as I do.

Because more and more things cost money these days - driver updates, Multiview updates, updates of Multiview updates...
Those who are still considering purchases like that might need some reassurance that the whole thing is not completely dead yet. Hyperion's bankruptcy, A-EON distributing their own (wannabe) OS updates and the lack of any real progress in the last decade 'might' give even the most die-hard fan reason to worry.

Define 'use'? Developing software might be a fun way of 'using' AmigaOS, but getting actual work done with an Amiga was already quite hard a decade ago - those of us who were willing to put up with that were in big part motivated by the feeling that AmigaOS was moving again and the expectation that the many problematic areas would be addressed in the foreseeable future. Which, in turn, means there's reason to worry when there are ni visible signs of actual progress, no? |
