The first review of "ANY" AmigaNG computer from an international PC/Tech magazine/webzine is up

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/05/the-a-eon-amiga-x5000-reviewed-the-beloved-amiga-meets-2017/

We sent an X5000 to the author some time ago and it up :)

@apsturk

Was a great read. Am saving up my pennies to get a fully configured system when they become available in the UK.

Come on AmigaKit before I spend it on the wife and kid!

@Amiboy

I will wait for the inevitable cries of "the OS only supports one core" and " the OS doesn't really have memory protection".

Actually, no I won't.

Omitting both things IMO makes the review misleading. Its a fine board for running OS4, I'm sure, assuming it lacks the driver problems in the SAM460.

Talking of the SAM I wonder where my/your old board has ended up? :)

@Aslak3

Have often wondered where it is, a small part of me misses it.

Me too. I would probably have kept hold of it if it wasn't for the USB/NIC problems. I just hope the current owner is giving it lots of love. :)

@Aslak3

I probably would have kept hold of it too if I hadn't have had a cash flow problem

I am pretty sure whomever has it now is looking after it well.

@eliyahu

Did you read the comments? They pretty much mirrored the daily opinions of many here....
"Too expensive", "Too underpowered", etc.

Point being, judging by the comments not one person was really interested in buying one, so Id be surprised if the review bought in any new users.
On the plus side, lots of people seemed to think it was cool, just not something they'd buy.
On the downside, a lot of the praise it received was based on the fact it has an inbuilt fpga, which it doesnt, so most of the interest was based on features it doesnt have :)

Bit of a sidebar, but there was quite a bit of inaccurate stuff in the review too.

Well i am happy i upgraded my Sam 460 to the X5000, its a really nice machine to use. I would most definitely advise anyone sitting on the fence to seriously consider going for it.

@fishy_fis

"Too underpowered",

Well it does not have AltiVec, but it not under powered its maybe faster then AmigaONE-X1000, as I understand it the X5000 has faster PCI express bus, that helps a lot, I believe it has faster memory too.

Even A1222 is not as slow as we expected, it looks like even this computer can play videos, and run emulators not too slowly.

AmigaONE X5000 videos can be found here.

@fishy_fis

trust me this machine is anything but underpowered Yes it wont compare to a current PC but given the type of software that is out there for Amiga OS at this present time, it doesnt need the high specs.

Using Odyssey on the X5000 is like using a completely different browser compared to the Sam 460

@NutsAboutAmiga

My guess remains that they don't need to emulate all FPU instructions with the A1222. The SPE can be used for most instructions, not all.

So some things might slow down a little bit, but the CPU has more raw power then for example, the SAM 440 and 460.

@WolfpackN64

It might be that emotion video player has some optimized code for it too, I have no idea, but it looks like it plays game well to, So I guess the it's not as bad we expected.

@NutsAboutAmiga

According to EntwicklerX in the comment section of the video, since Emotion mainly used fixpoints, it's no a problem (and the app has no SPE optimizations).

@fishy_fis

yup, i did. i remember seeing the same negative comments in the SAM review as well. but for me that didn't matter. i don't imagine it's going to bring in a bunch of new blood. but you never know, maybe one. or two. it did last time.

@Topic

" Now that everything is in HTML5, these videos (=youtube videos) are playable. Similarly, I was able to use Google Docs with no problems, and I could run the full version of Gmail as long as I set the browser to spoof as Safari for Macintosh."

Sounds very interesting. It sounds like something that I could maybe use as a everyday computer as my demands arent that much for it, basically working browser with support to most important modern stuffs (youtube, google docs, gmail) would already make me go long way.

I might give it a try at some point to try if it would become my everyday usage computer. Its been already too long since I had an Amiga as that.
