Really? Its a very good illustration of a G5 with a non-Apple video card. Of course I've never seen a GCN card being used in one of these.
And I'd kill for MorphOS in later G5s, since drivers for the 5000 and 6000 series cards are about to be introduced.
Again, if anyone is selling a SAM460 in preparation for an upgrade, I'd love to have one of those.
The only reason I'm hesitant to buy an X5000/20 is that I want an X5000/40, but I might have to just go for it. After all, Han has drivers for the 6000 cards that work under OS4, and with MorphOS support and Linux support for the same hardware, it would be a killer combo.
tlosm and I are on the same page here, its worth the price to buy a new X5000, as opposed to hoping older hardware will be supported one day. A bird in the hand... Last edited by iggy on 25-Jul-2017 at 04:16 PM.

I see that it's confirmed that MXM cards will be used for video. I recently found R9 270X cards for £179 at Zentrica so not too much of a premium over PCIe cards. The question is how likely to be as easily obtainable by the time the full design will be available. |

That card is R9 M270X. Your regular R9 270X is about 2.5 times faster. |

Thanks. I suppose I should have realised considering the differences in cooling and power requirements of desktop cards. |

Currently wont matter under Linux Powerpc as the Radeon SI cards only work with software rasterization . llvmpipe now works under Ubuntu 16.04 and Debian Sid so cpu power is a factor in graphics performance.

That is what I've run into while comparing Terascale 2 based video cards for the PowerMac G5. Using a Radeon HD 6870 does not make much more sense than an HD 6570 or HD 8470, as the cpu is doing most of the heavy lifting. |

With the X5000 the Terascale 2 based video card will give you full GPU support under Linux. So full 3D acceleration and GPU video decoding . So 1080p video playback works. One would expect the same on the PPC notebook with one of these video cards _________________ Sam460ex : Radeon Rx550 Single slot Video Card : SIL3112 SATA card |

Thanks, you know..., I've been a little, um 'rude?' in my posts with you, but you HAVE been a real asset in the community.
And while I have enjoyed playing around with Linux on my PCIe G5, what its really done is help me reaffirm that I need an X5000.
The system is available new, and it has more modern features. Its supported by OS4, will soon be supported by MorphOS (which the G5 may very well never be, after all the development team is spread thin, and they believe they are already supporting too many platforms), and then there's the support and active development of Linux distros specifically tailored to the X5000.
OK, it is a little more expensive than a PC, BUT its no where near as expensive as a Power9 system. And I already pay a fair amount for the Lenovo laptops I favor (so I'll pay a slight premium for hardware I prefer).
The only things I'm waffling on now are, first, do I buy an X5000/20 now, or hope the X5000/40 gets produced. And, second, which video card do I use. If I go with a Radeon HD 4890, I'll get acceleration and composting under MorphOS as the drivers that Mark "Bigfoot' Olsen has been working on support this, but the OS4 driver support for those cards isn't that good. A Radeon 6670, 6750. 6770, 6850, or 6870 would give me decent support under both PPC NG OS', but I've heard that some people have run into issues with the 6850/70 under OS4.
I have a Radeon HD 7770 sitting around, but GCN cards are not a priority for Mark yet (although he has a few and has mentioned that he did install an R7 260X, a GCN2 card, polling the bus to get info on it), so far I think he's only set up a GCN card as a framebuffer display.
Anyway...this all will be resolved in the coming months. I pulled my reserve funds out of Amiga On the Lake when they had their unfortunate falling out with AmigaKit. But I'm replacing that, and I am already actively looking for a video card.
I can buy a high end card used on eBay, or there are still a few Terascale2 based cards available new, I just have to decide (and considering how I tend to be indecisive, I'll probably end up with more than one). I'd also like to dig up an Envy 24 based audio card (the better solution for this platform, although both the VIA and CMI based cards are supposed to be supported under MorphOS 3.10).
Anyway, sorry for the extended post (y'all don't need such an extensive view into my thought processes). And again, thanks for your support of Linux for Aeon systems.
Edit - BTW - Where are the Linux distros available for download? That new version of Mate looks particularly interesting. Last edited by iggy on 29-Jul-2017 at 01:03 PM. Last edited by iggy on 29-Jul-2017 at 12:53 PM.

As far as I know the 6000 series cards are no better supported in OS4 than the 4000 series cards. My 4890 performed without issue and I only saw fit to replace it when Southern Islands cards got 3D acceleration via Warp3D. |

There was no question of that but there isn't better support for the 6000 series than there is for 4000 series cards, which was my point. |

I see your point, but that is now. When the X1000 was released, the driver for the 4000 series sucked.
Edit - BTW - I just bought a Radeon HD 6870 on eBay, I already have the memory needed, so I now need to look for the sound card. Last edited by iggy on 29-Jul-2017 at 09:20 PM.

I wasn't aware of this. And I bought a HD4890 new for my X1000 when I also bought it new. And bare.
The 4000 series was said to be well supported at the time. Right now it's on loan to another X1000 owner and I have a 5450 in its place. There may have been a problem with compositing but I think it was a driver issue I hadn't sorted out.
The only real issue I had was the X1000 firmware took 20 seconds to set the card up from power up. Although I have seen a G5 tower do the same thing. But the X1000 is known to have unusually slow firmware anyway. I hope UBoot is better on the X5000. The older UBoot certainly is faster on my AmigaOne-XE. |

Well, I've had others correct me on my opinion of OS4 R700 drivers, so it looks like a worthwhile option for the X5000. I would have preferred a 5000 series card though, they offer a nice jump in performance.
Still, HD 4890 cards are available at a good price right now, as the later versions of Windows don't support cards below the 5000s well. _________________ Amiga! "Our appeal has become more selective" |

FWIW, booting my X5000/20 takes 42 seconds from power on to AmiDock appearing on the Workbench. I think Trevor does a bit better with 41 sec on his machine.
That's with 2 GB memory, the system on an SSD running NGFileSystem and "hands-off" auto boot.
