I think it's not a hack. Because they have got 64bit graphics card memory. _________________ I'm an antique. Don't light my fuse |

-- Explaining of how GPU can have more.
The graphic card is isolated system, (own processing unit GPU, own RAM) only when you lock a bitmap will memory be available where CPU can reach it. This is way you can use more memory on GPU, then on the CPU.
This is really old idea, back to days of paged memory

-- Explain how AmigaOS4.1 can have more.
AmigaOS4.1 has workaround for system memory above the 2GB barrier, this also closed system, you not access the memory directly, but you can access the memory indirectly, by moving the memory into 2GB barrier, and out of 2GB barrier when your done.
I believe this used by RAM disk, so you don't wast the precious address below 2GB barrier.
AmigaOS has had virtual memory sense the 4.0 days. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 22-Oct-2017 at 11:23 AM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 22-Oct-2017 at 11:20 AM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 22-Oct-2017 at 11:17 AM.

No I think you’re wrong. 256mb was the limit. This new driver fixes that. |

| @tlosm This is about bandwidth. How fast vram is. The fact that we will have 64bit ram, will mean that we can use more than 2GB ram on the amiga. Beyond 4 aswell. 32bit can only adress 4GB. And infact the new AMD Polaris gfx cards have 256bit ram bus... So you're falling behind. Quote:

it mean the amigaos kernel will be 64bit? _________________ I love Amiga and new hope by AmigaNG A 500 + ; CDTV; CD32; PowerMac G5 Quad 8GB,SSD,SSHD,7800gtx,Radeon R5 230 2GB; MacBook Pro Retina I7 2.3ghz; #nomorea-eoninmyhome |

| @Those talking About Gfx Memory.
You are getting confused because there are two different memory limits.
There is the PCI limit of 256Mb gfx mem visible to the CPU, this is what limits the current P96 to 256 (128 on some card depending on memory layout).
Then there is the signed 32bit pointer limit of 2gb
The new drivers will allow the graphcs card to manage it's own memory in 64bits and use a system similar in cncept to the extended memory being introduced in the man kernel , but seperate from that, and entorely managed by the driver, which enables the graphices card to excede both limits.
As far as I understand this extra memeory is only available to warp3D and Nova software (ie texture and shader memory) not P96 software *but* if the 3D software isn;t using the memory from the main 256 block then there is more of that available to p96 as an indirect efffect.

Your confusing memory width with address range.
There is nothing stopping the GPU (or CPU) to make use of a 64/128/256bit RAM while still retaining a 32bit address range.
While GFX cards with 4 or more GB might use 64bit addressing, you'll find that the number of bits it can actually use is somewhat lower. Just like the 68000/010/EC20 used 32bit addresses but could only address 24bit (16MB) of actual memory. Last edited by Kronos on 22-Oct-2017 at 01:07 PM.

I was at AmiWest and didn't hear Libre Office mentioned, however I did ask Trevor about it. Its being worked on by the Friedens, as a side project when they have spare time. So its still a work in progress. _________________ - BCP AmigaOne X1000 & Amiga 4000

thank you! I hope this becomes more than a side project soon, I think it would add a lot of value to the platform. Friedens are good guys to have working on this though. _________________ AmigaOne X1000 owner |

Actually it would be more like going from using Akiko to not using Akiko in the next product.
