@K-L

"How powerful will th Amiga A1222 be, will it be more powerful than my SAM460?"

That's a Yes/No question. If no one was to elaborate, this thread would only have 1 reply, "Yes" or "No". Everything else would be off-topic.

@tlosm: The question was not about "the real power" of the CPU, the question was "will it be more powerful than my SAM460?"". That´s because we talk about AOS4-systems here.

As I said before: RPI is a nice device, but not relevant in this case.

AOS4 emulated on a RPI3? Must be painful.

Compatibility? Maybe. Performance? What about quick Quake3 benchmark?

So the Tabor is around the same ballpark as a SAM460 which in turn isn't any faster than a Pegasos2 (give or take depending on which benchmark is used).

They do have the advantage of being able use newer video hardware which results in faster 2D compositing and 3D performance.

Quote:
Tabor will be priced not that different than the Pegasos2 which means no (or only very little) progress has been made in bang/buck for the past 13 years

It's good for Pegasos 2 owners that the hardware can keep up for newer systems in CPU grunt and have thus stayed relevant for OS4 up to now. It's a pity that when software starts coming through with support for Warp3D Nova the older systems will be left behind for no better reason than the BIOS not being able to recognise newer video hardware.

@Rob

currently it's only a bit faster with one core active but when or if two core comes available it will be. but it has a better pci-e and if i remember the ram should be faster too. so yes it's worth especial for me because i only have an amigaone micro... 32 mb of gfx mem. so it will be THE upgrade that i can erford. maybe in time i will find a used 5040

It runs existing software just fine. Yes, even stuff that uses the FPU (albeit with a performance penalty).

As for a Quake3 benchmark; it's best that we wait until Thomas is done with the improved FPU emulation. Test results obtained now won't reflect final performance.

Back to the original question:
Quote:

Yes, it will be more powerful than your Sam460, although we'll have to wait and see by how much. On paper it has more processing power, even with one core (2.4 DMIPS/MHz/core vs 2.0 for the 460ex) and faster RAM. Of course, a lot more affects performance than just those two numbers.

Daytona has already estimated that it's approx. 1.5x faster with integer code. For code that uses the FPU, we'll have to wait and see what the faster FPU emulation can deliver.

I personally like the A1222/Tabor. Enough so that I asked A-EON for one while skipping the X5000 (for now). The main reason is that it's small size and lower cost suits my laptop project.

My initial impression is that it feels snappier than the Sam460.** It also boots faster than my X1000 (never seen a machine load the kickstart that fast). I'm looking forward to seeing how the improved FPU emulation performs.

Hans

** NOTE: That's for general usage and running a few Warp3D Nova demos. I haven't tried anything that makes heavier use of the FPU.

@Hans

If I look f.ex to http://blog.hyperion-entertainment.biz/?p=1282 the speed penalty for no specially compiled FPU versions are rather steep.

Anyway as for OS4 there are only three current options, the Tabor is not the worst choice for OS4 users as the X5000 is überexepensive and emulation is , well, not everyone's cup of tea and performance wise a bit weak still.

Pegasos had a G4 (7447) with Altivec and a standard fpu, the Tabor comes with this non standard fpu and no Altivec. Does not sound too convincing to me.

Yes, with the current FPU emulator which emulates the FPU using the integer unit. Thomas is working on something faster...

So, let's wait and see what it'll be like when he's done.

Hans

smtp? for sure will be the fastest os4 machine but not the fastest ppc desktop machine or comparable with the slower crappy nowaday x64 machine with a N4200.

Sorry to ruin your parade, but Wii U uses three core 1.2 GHz G3 class CPU... (Source)

For sure, it would be good choice for OS4, but certainly not the fastest OS4 hardware available.

@Zylesea

Yes, but was the G4 Pegasos the equivalent to €400 in today's money?
The non-standard FPU is of course disappointing, but as a budget (in terms of OS4 hardware) system, it still looks interesting. FPU is becoming less important as GPU's take over much of the processing traditionally done by the FPU. So SPE optimized display drivers would go a long way in closing the gap.

Also, don't forget the Tabor is dual-core. This is irrelevant for now, and may never become relevant, but in theory it could perform much better. At this time I think software development, more than hardware development is keeping OS4 performance back. Enabling SMP support in AmigaOS 4 could potentially double the performance on the same hardware.

Agree, software development is holding back for now but A-Eon is doing good things with Radeon drivers to offload the cpu.

I have a G4 Peg2 with OS4 and Morphos and a AmigaONE 500: on the G4 the Radeon 9250 card is the bottleneck and on the A1-500 I notice the cpu is slower then the Peg2.

my big fault was sell my peggy 2 ... because if i know what i know today about pci->pcie and linux kernel i have the feeling that probably i will be able to run new radeon card on peggy 2 on linux.
