SMBFS 2.1 Posted on 26-Nov-2018 18:18:59

| The incredible Hul...err, Olaf Barthel has released a new version of SMBFS.
Two years of hard work went into it and it has received a lot of love and new features.
Get it here while it's hot and juicy.
Also, if you're into technical stuff, feast your eyes on the mighty changelog
Quote:
This is the first new major release of the file system, which in the previous two years has been thoroughly rewritten to provide for better compatibility and to follow the available SMBv1/CIFS specification where possible.
New features include (but are not limited to) support for Unicode, large files (> 4 GB) and reconnecting to the server if a connection has broken down/timed out.
|
Thank you, Olaf
Edit: I won't cross-post, but there is a 68k version as well |

| Thanks very much Olaf for your hard work. This release seems more stable than 1.74. I am using it with Synology NAS.

You're welcome
The www.a1k.org forum testers were very kind to put smbfs through the wringer on most of the mainstream NAS hardware available in the past 1-2 years, and even more exotic gear such as the Drobo.
Question is: has anybody experienced compatibility or performance issues with smbfs 2.1 which need looking into? It's been awfully quiet, and I'm not what you would call an optimist when it comes to consider something as complex as an SMBv1/CIFS file system "good enough"... |

No issues here, but I´m using quite "mainstream" hardware, Fritz!Box 7560 (1&1 edition) with some 64GB USB stick as mass storage media.
Works VERY well, I was a bit surprised how fast it is, now |

I'm using a FritzBox 6490 Cable (unbranded) here.
They enhanced the NAS access speed with firmware 7 (NTFS) and yes, it's pretty good and sufficient for music and even HD videos (*if* the players would support hardware rendering/acceleration)
...and of course, olsen squeezed every little bit out of the line... Last edited by Raziel on 02-Dec-2018 at 05:27 PM.

But at least it has performed fine there.
I'm connecting to our WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra NAS over the LAN on startup (using SMBMounter). I have a feeling that the new version is better at getting a connection than the old one was.
I have also tried (once) connecting to a Samba share on my Linux machine, that also seemed to work fine.
I haven't yet had an opportunity to make any speed tests, nor to try writing data to a share (of any relevant size, at least).
Best regards,
Niels

| I've been finally able to connect my modem/HD, but, using SMBMounter it works only on the direct option imputing the IP address/diskname it requires the password and connect it straight away. Filling the data on above boxes to have a permanent link does not work.

This is the result of major changes in the file system. Prior to version 2.1 the file system built and processed the server message blocks which give the protocol its name (SMB) with no regard to performance.
If you were reading data from a remote file, the server message block would be unpacked and its "payload" copied to the file read buffer, which was then returned to the Amiga program which prompted the read operation. The same process, in reverse, happened when writing data to a remote file.
Reviewing the old code I noticed that reading/writing remote file data involves an unnecessary memory copy operation. Removing this copy operation, replacing it with a simple call to send()/recv(), respectively, reduced the overhead and improved overall performance. |

If I remember correctly, SMBmounter may still need to be updated to support what smbfs 2.1 can deliver. Not all the new command line parameters were supported when the testing on the www.a1k.org forum concluded.
For now you might want to try using smbfs directly without SMBmounter to help it along. I managed to cut back the number of options which were necessary to get something out of smbfs. For example, smbfs can now be used with a plain IPv4 address (e.g. //192.168.0.1/share) and does not require that the server name is provided. You no longer need a workgroup name either.
Unless your setup is very peculiar, all that should be needed would be the user name, the password and the combined server/share name (e.g. //server/share) to mount. If you do not need a user name and password, all that's required is the combined server/share name.

I haven't yet had a chance to try out the new SMBFS release, but when I do I'll check out what changes need to be made to SMBMounter and sort them out._________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

Oh, yes, please. I'm using SMBMounter with the 1.74 release of SMBFS atm. A 2.1 compatible version would be very much appreciated! _________________ X1000|II/G4|440ep|2000/060|2000/040|1000 |

| I fired up my XE for the first time in ages to try this, but get the dreaded grim reaper on first start attempt. It did mount a drive on second attempt after ignoring dsi errors, but I’m not happy that it won’t crash during a file transfer. I have gone back to the one on OS4Depot which doesn’t have this issue. Why does OS4Depot not have the latest versions of software now days has it been abandoned? |

Since some time nom, I can't get speeds higher than 400KB from my server and 500 KB to my server. Way to slow to be usable.
I don't understand why it has suddenly dropped in performance. My Mac Mini G4 with MorphOS has no trouble with SMBFS.
I cannot pass arguments to improve anything since when I use more than one of them I get "wrong number of arguments".
Is there a new version coming soon ? Is there something to configure ? Is it possible that using a 1Gbs card could lead to this behaviour only with SMBFS (no problem with FTP, curl, Odyssey or Wget) ?
I'm still using the latest release (2.1). _________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz |

Yes I am. Unless you can point me to the executable and not the source code. Last edited by K-L on 21-Aug-2019 at 12:25 AM.
