Very interesting interview.
Sadly inside lines I understand Tabor will not be released in next few months and it will continue to have with same cpu with SPE instead a more common FPU.
It could not be problem until GCC dropped PowerPC SPE support.

A good and positive read! More excited about the Tabor now! The 'Trampoline' code sounds like a great endeavour from Thomas Frieden and should make up for most of the FPU shortcomings:

Quote:
As Daniel Mussener reported when he used SPE code to speed up his Tower57 port,
"if you check out the fps counter you'll notice that it runs pretty fast, actually quite a lot faster than on a sam460ex". He later posted, "The "normal" Tower57 FPU build works too on the Tabor btw. In that case, as with all other FPU-using programs, the OS' current compatibility backend kicks in (Thomas' unique 'trampoline' code) and "translates" each and every FPU-opcode into something the Tabor likes. Interesting enough: even then the Tabor is so powerful that it's still playable (about 20fps where the sam460 reaches about 30fps)."

I understand slow progress on Os4 by Hyperion for their financial issues. What really I do not understand the slowness of the tabor driver development. Aeon seems not having financial issues and they should be really interested in returning the investment done for the tarbor development. This slowness seems something contagious in the Amiga world

@ilbarbax

Trevor openly identifies drivers as an ongoing problem and I'm sure he prioritises A-EON resources accordingly.

Compare this to Troika, Adam 'Ack' Kowalczyk, and even Mick Tinker's endeavours and the A-EON effort is set apart in terms of community interaction, delivery on promises and most importantly professionalism.

I for one can forgive them some tardiness on the delivery of the Tabor because of the financial and design constraints that they are operating under. I fail to see how anyone could do a better or faster job on delivering on the AmigaOne vision of AmigaNG. Tabor was a vision that they WILL deliver on come what may at a lower price point then current OS4.x systems. That is impressive in Amigaland ...period.

Considering the alternative strategy:

x86 / opensource etc hasn't significantly boosted Haiku or AROS IMHO!

Edit: Mick not Mike Tinker

So compared to scam-artists, jokers and fools, Trevor is doing o.k.?

Way to set the bar low....

Or you could compare him to companies/individuals that actually delivered.

@Kronos

The bar is very low in Amigaland, so yes Trevor is set apart as a real businessman with a passion for the Amiga. We are lucky to have him. I will not compare A-EON to Microsoft or Apple and the fairest comparison is the RiscOS resurgence on RPi machines. Are the Raspberry Pi peeps billionaires or do they too do it out of love and passion for the community?

For the record Mick Tinker was not a scam artist but he wasn't a realist and over promised and didn't deliver. Just like a lot of people before him and you can add Alive Mediasoft to that list

Who said you should?

Compare him to companies that did deliver into our market.

bPlan/Genesi, Eyetech and ACube or even some of the 68k stuff.

No, I won't because none of them are active anymore. ACube may still be of interest to us as they are helping to design a PPC laptop which might be a potential porting destination for OS4.x but the others... dead!

The Apollo Team / Vampire project might as well be in hibernation compared to the community engagement that Trevor does! The Vampire V4 has extreme potential but it's almost as if the Apollo Team don't want it to ever be a mass produced product. At least A-EON have ordered 1000 CPUs for the Tabor and that shows intent to sell at least 1000 boards.

@Kronos

I gather only newly produced h/w counts?
Otherwise I believe some credit is due to those who ported to existing h/w.

I believe Mac somewhat allowed the expansion of the MorphOS market, no?
BPPC, CSPPC, port to Pegasos on the Amiga side....not as great an effect, but worth a mention.

Oh yeah forgot this is Amiga were there is no crime bigger than learning from past!!

But lets just see how professional Trevor looks just in this interview:

"After the development of the 'AmigaOne X1000' and problems with supply and eventual cancellation of the (expensive) PA6T-1682M CPU following P.A. Semi's acquisition by Apple,"

Ermmmmm, Apple bought PASemi before the P6T existed in silicon and canceled it the next day.

But they had to provide some based on existing (military) contracts.

Limited number of surplus chips ended with brokers and some time LATER Trevor had the X1000 designed based those few units.

But somehow he makes it sound like the X1000 has been backstabbed by Apple...

"As the FPU was non standard we checked with the core AmigaOS 4 developers on the suitability of the CPU and after we were given the green light"

That would have been the same people who at that time were seriously behind in support for both the X1000/5000 but somehow a 2nd opinion wasn't needed and decision was rushed without any need.

-> Trevor ain't no "pro" he is a fan boy with deep pockets who doesn't understand/care about "dead end" signs on the way.

Well, the story and the impression one might get certainly depends on "which" telling of the story you focus on.

the Amiga Future article certainly offered a different spin

also covered here

Perhaps it was a combination of events. Without a true timeline we may never know.

Not sure what Hermans and his shenanigans have to with the fact that PASemi was bought by Apple in April 2008 sometime before talk about "MAP" really heated up into the direction of new PPC HW.

@Kronos

Just commenting on your quote about backstabbing.

It should be clear from the other telling of the story, where he felt the backstabbing occurred.

"x86 / opensource etc hasn't significantly boosted Haiku or AROS IMHO!"

Of Haiku I have little knowledge.

I may misunderstand but think this console is AROS based. Certainly the opensource nature makes such a thing possible.
