According to Trevor's latest interview they are beta testing the 4 core X5000, maybe they cleaned up the flaws.

Cool ... but they are testing it on AmigaOS on Linux the situation will not change :)
note the bench was made on linux.

About Benchmarks for all the bench that i make on X5000/20 and X5000/40 (phoronix, sys speed some others, emulation and games) the result are not different compared what hard info gave in result.
X5000 is not comparable with an old G5 except the integer performances where i sow better result but the bootleneck is the ram speed really worst and this make linux run choppy.

For sure on amigaos you will have the fastest machine but just because other powerpc hardware are not amigaos compatible... im courious to know ho x5000/20 run in morphos compared powermacs G4 and G5

Quote:
Aren't the benchmarks cpu dependid ? That is, the benchmarks running in the caches on the cp and not the main ram.

Ram test was made with stream ... and there G5 quad is more than 3 times more faster than the X5000/40 ... note the quad have ddr ... x5000/40 had ddr 3 1600

Sorry but i dont belive any more in Trevor ... choice and managment.

@tlosm
What X1000 did you use for the benchmarks test?
I don't see one listed in your signature.

Especially starting at 20:00. CAPI + CPU.

The attached CPU need not be super fast as what it is connecting to is so fast the I/O becomes almost transparent. Issue a command and zip..... it's done and ready for the next process. Yes, really cool.

I have to agree. Getting OS4 running on such an advanced system makes about as much sense as installing MS-DOS as the primary OS on a 9th generation Intel system. Wasteful and pointless.

So is doing a burnout when your hobby is muscle cars on a purely intellectual level. But if you find it fun and can afford it, by the same token, then why not?

That's an incorrect analogy to what's being discussed here. It isn't all about cost, it's also about performance and capabilities. A better analogy would be taking a Ferrari and replacing its wheels with ones from a toy car. Why cripple it?

Why take a mutli-core CPU with 64-bit addressing and cripple it with an OS that can't use more than 4GB or RAM, nor take advantage of the multiple cores? I suppose if your goal is to degrade the performance of said hardware as much as possible, then be my guest. But the goal of 99.9% of computer AND automobile hobbyists and professionals is to squeeze every last bit of performance out of their hardware as possible....not spending money to degrade it.

Using your logic I should spend a fortune on a premium computer and just unplug it from the mains.....there, maximum degradation at a premium price! Fantastic fun!

this failed comparison made me log in again.
installing os4 on a something resembling contemporary hardware (if it was even possible these days) might be pointless, but also pretty harmless.

burning out tires might be considered traditional sports in america, but it stinks, makes potentially other people suffer and it doesn't serve any real purpose, except what some people consider a contribution to a dangerous climate change. whether this is right or wrong, it is clearly an asocial behavior (ant thats likely whats exciting about that). well, im not for state imposed control of such attitudes, even if i dont share the excitement, but self responsibility might chip in. whoever likes real carnage will be better served to volunteer as mercenary to fight in some proxy war

No, no one is asking you to do anything.

People have different opinions about what is fun, all the time.

Also, even if something holds a premium price, some people have more money to throw at such things without a care than others.

If Fl@sh thinks this would be a cool thing to do and he is willing to spend that kind of money, what is there really to criticize?

Much of the point of this website for years was to promote the usage of a expensive hardware system that utilized a niche OS lacking many modern features. There is nothing wrong with that, its a hobby after all.

Clearly you have never met all of the automobile hobbyists who will drive their classic cars on bias ply tires and keep drum brakes in their cars so as not to "taint" their vehicles. Or will continue to run multiple carbs they keep having to adjust rather than throwing on an EFI system. Again, hobbyists can be funny with their twist on how to approach their hobby.

If you were looking at such hardware to run OS4 then the overriding factor would be that it would be able to run your software faster than any other OS4 compatible hardware that came before it. If you find it unacceptable to run your software with such limitations then simply don't use OS4 since it obviously not for you.

no offence meant, but if you have land to waste, you may not care if even a half of one state has been lost as a contaminated nuclear polygon, whether for professionals or hobbyists. but not everyone has that freedom, which may explain some differences in attitudes between states and continents. north americans are sure not alone in this respect. ;)
