It sounds like you are at some institution or similar that provides wifi through authentication, you cannot turn off 802.1x without going offline. Are you by any chance a student or academic using eduroam at some university campus? :)

Nope, retirement community. There's an IT office I can call but they're not Amiga-smart, of course. At least they know Macs.

I might call them before turning off 802.1x in the Mac's System Preferences

Well, turning off 802.1x didn't work. I've made an appt with the IT people, but they can't come until Feb. 10th, so this "project' is on hold until then.

Oh I see. I thought you had connected the Plipbox to the access point. So was it hooked up the hallway router? Could be more complicated hooking the Mac to the router then.

In that case your best bet is going the wifi route. Hooking the Plipbox up to a wifi adaptor. Unless the Amiga browser works you will need to access the adaptor through the Mac to login. Then it should be fine.

That's my experience with these setups.

No, the Plipbox was connected to the Macbook Pro via Ethernet. The hallway router an the acccess point in my ceiling have no visible connections, being behind drywall. I haven't been able to ger a connecrion using the D-Link, but the signal inside has been strong enough since the access point was installed.

Is the D-Link (called a "range extender on its box) what you mean by a "wi-fi adapter"?

Right, what you need is a device capable of connecting to 802.1x protected wifi, and act as router/gateway for the Amiga over ethernet. This is exactly what I use low cost ARM devices for, raspberry pi zero W for example, or orange pi zero. They both are supertiny and fit inside the Amiga, or inside a custom box along with a plipbox.

What’s sort of missing as a product is a more advanced form of plipbox that can do modern “advanced” (dot1x, not just PSK) wifi on its own.

I suspect the d-link is “too dumb” to support 802.1x as a client, very typical for cheap consumer targeted devices. I suppose noone has managed to connect google chromecasts, games consoles or smart TVs etc to this network either? :)

Maybe the provider has a different (hidden) SSID with PSK instead of dot1x available for use with “dumb” devices?

Well, I leave that to the IT technician who arrives on Feb. 10th.

I have no space right now in my A4000 desktop, as all its slots are full (2 for the Picasso IV, one for the One Sto Music Shop, and one for the Emplant, whcih I suppose i could remove, as I haven't used it in years)

Lastly - what is the goal here? If you just want to access web and use UHCTools for to download stuff from Aminet etc, you can get a long way just connecting over ethernet to the mac, configure some rfc1918 addresses statically and just run a web proxy on the mac. You can also install telnet and rsh daemons on the mac to get terminal access and be able to run commands on the mac, download/uploas files with ftp or zmodem etc.

The best I can do now is a) sneaker net (download something to the Mac, transfer it to a flash drive, put the flash drive in my 21 1/2-year-old Powerbook (when it boots ,
copy it to a Mac floppy, and put the floppy in an Amiga; or b) burn the download to a CD and put it in the Amiga

Consider replacing the Emplant with a Deneb USB controller, so you at least can speed up your sneakernet with USB sticks, hehe As a bonus it also gives you faster ethernet via a supported USB ethernet dongle...

Bear in mind, though, that I live in a wi-fi environment. I only tried an Ethernet option to connect to the wi-fi network via my Macbook Pro. Otherwise, there is no Ethernet connectivity available here.

So, after a few posts, did you mean connecting the Plipbox with your D-Link router?

By wi-fi adapter, yes I mean the D-Link range extender. Or any other wifi to ethernet adaptor you could test. The one I have has it's own hotspot I can configure from and also log in to the internet from if needed from a web interface.

How do you log in? Web page or other method?

Also do you have mobile data? Still need to use wifi. But you could hotspot your phone wirelessly to your Amiga.

Yes, I connected the Plipbox to the Macbook Pro using a crossover cable. Not using hte D-Link, which would require two crossover cables (i just bought one), one between the Plipbox and the D-Link and another from the D-Link to the Macbook Pro.

How could I hotspot my iPhone to my Amiga when the Amgia has no wireless capability?

I've tried retrieving e-mail and loading web pages from the Amiga side after starting AmiTCP, the easied TCP stack I have, both with no luck.

Bad idea! TCP Stacks have special programs for tests.

ping (testing a connection wit an address given in numeric format or as URL)
netstat providing informations of your connection.
ifconfig gives an overview of interfaces and their adresse.

The way you have to go ist:
1. Build a connection between your Amiga and the Plibbox.
1.b. test it.
2. Buil a connection between your Plibbox and the internet (Wifi or Lan)
2b. test it
2c. select a nameserver
2d. test the nameserver
3. Set up your internet application: browser email etc.

Don't make step 3 before step 2.

There is only one mayor difficulty with a TCP stack, you need to make it use PLIP (and a Sana device for PLIP) as your standard interface.

Follow the instructions and test the result, if it doesn't work or if you don't know how to do it, you might use the wrong TCP stack.

He us using 802.1x (aka “WPA/WPA2 Enterprise”) for logging on to the network, that is what 802.1x is all about, so no web portal no.

If it can work you could hook up the D-Link range extender to the Plipbox. Is it wifi only or does it have an ethernet port?

Otherwise you'd have to get an ethernet to wifi adaptor. Which might need power from USB you could plug into a USB plug pack. Looks strange needing power for a wireless device connected to a network card but I've done that.

The other option is tethering the iPhone to you Amiga. But since even doing that with an old phone or even Android would need drivers we dont have forget that!

I looked it up but didn't find much info on the log in process. So would this be set under internet settings? I've come across it in router web pages but without having it didn't see how it all worked.

The D-Link has Ethernet ports. I've tried to connect it to the Macbook Pro's Ethernet port without any luck.

I guess I'll see what the IT technician says when he/she comes in two weeks.
