Well it's 2020 already. What's the best AMD GPU for the Amiga X5000 please?

For me R9 280x is the best at moment.
Because it can handle both Warp3d and Warp3D nova excellent.
Another good card maybe R9 270

@Plexus

I’d agree that a Radeon R9 270 isn’t a bad option for this machine, I was using a R9 270X, up until last week until I got a new Radeon RX 550 and have been more than happy with its performance and just how much actually works on this card with the updated MiniGL. The FPS on games like Spencer is certainly a lot higher!
Shame the GfxBench2D scores on these Polaris cards are a lot lower on the same hardware but I am guessing this down to the drivers which will only get better in time.

What’s the latest and the greatest as far as cutting edge GPU cards for the X5000?

Repeating yourself because of short term memory loss is normal for many people over a certain age, but it usually applies to verbal communication, not written forum posts.

As other forum members have asked in the past, what do you want to run on your X5000, as the best video card for AmigaOS4 will be different than the best video card for MorphOS, or Linux. The answers already offered in this thread probably haven't changed much since last time you asked.

Is it not possible for this answer to change after a year?

Radeon RX580 is the most powerful card supported in OS4 and first hit the market almost 4 years ago.

I understand Hans is close to releasing a driver with hardware acceleration, but it won't be available for all cards.

I have a Radeon HD 7850.

Can anyone say which cards will get hardware acceleration (or am I completely mistaken?)

Thanks.

Which GPU is best for the X5000 in 2023 and is there one that supports OS 4.1 & MorphOS dual boot?

@DiscreetFX

Still no support for Radeon SI and Polaris in MorphOS so you have to sacrifce 3D and video acceleration in OS4 in order to dual boot. The fastest card for 3D in MorphOS is X1950, this will work in 2D and compositing in OS4. If you want 3D in both systems you have to go all the way back to Radeon 9000 PCI cards.

@DiscreetFX

I ordered a brand new X5040 last from Amedia Computer (FR).
They assembled it with a brand new Radeon RX 550.

It is a fine card, and outclasses what the AmigaOne can handle. The limitations I have sits within AmigaOS 4.
graphics.library seems to be very limited to just 238mb that means I can open 2 to 3 32bit screens in 1440p then it is out of memory.
And I can't select 4K resolutions at 60Hz, also a limitation of graphics.library that comes with 4.1FE (4.1 did not had this issue I heard).

@Rob

Just put two cards in your X5000.

I have the RX550 for AmigaOS, and X1900 for use with MorphOS and Linux.

You`ll get something like this

(using a PCIe-X4 to X16 converter for the X1900)

What would be the best GPU for an X5000 in 2022?

@amigadave

I would say a Radeon RX580 would be best when it comes to performance.
I just swapped my RX570 for a low power and smaller RX550.
The RX550 powered by the PCIe slot instead of needing an additional powerconnector.

Then again, the RX550 is a very low budget GPU and does not even comes close to a RX570 or RX580.

I was hoping to buy one card that supports AmigaOS 4.1 and MorphOS.

MorphOS supports a great deal of graphics cards in various ways, and what is ”best” depends of your needs:

- With 3D hardware acceleration
- With limited 3D hardware acceleration
- With 2D graphics acceleration & hardware overlay (this is what I would go for personally)
- With 2D graphics acceleration, no overlay

If you consider the fact that 3D is 99.9% useless on our platforms for most people (unlike other platforms that actually have SW and games worth noting) you may consider things like screen resolution for 2D and overlay as more important? But that is of course individually subjective.

If HW 3D accelleration is essential for you in both MorphOS and OS4 then you are probably best off with a dual card solution like others have suggested.

A MorphOS TinyGL driver is eventually coming for the R600, R700, Evergreen and Northern Islands families of Radeon chips. Maybe if you resurrect this thread in a year from now?

@TRIPOS

Okay, let’s stick to 2D then. Best card that supports both operating systems? I don’t care about Linux support, I can run Linux almost anywhere else. Just hoping to get MorphOS running on more modern hardware and I don’t want to loose the option of running OS 4.1.

@Skateman

Hi Skateman! Do you know if all, or at least most RX550 cards work, or do you need something specific?

I may want to pull the big bulky R9 270X out of mine... I am sure the few games I do run will work just fine with the RX550.. probably even better....
