The Amiga's answer to Sonic has been remastered for the PC! Out today!

Has anyone got this working on Windows 7? It claims it is Windows 10 only on Steam!

@BigD

I thought this was a complete reboot like Stardust or Alien Breed. At first I was wondering why the music sounded fake and one rock tune sounded like it was ripped directly from Lotus III. But I see it's not a complete reboot.

They've recreated it so it looks like a 1993 DOS port. Which has been done already. Which I find strange.

Stranger still is the high requirements. Windows 10 and 64 bit only with an i3. Could it be ported to OS4 even?

I see this is a training exercise. The original was likely written in ASM using normal procedure programming. But they have recoded it as objective C++ 64 bit which seems extreme for such a simple game. Also it was recreated in a game maker years ago. So recoding it from scratch by hand in a programming language looks like a highload of work for a proof of concept. Redoing the wheel that had already turned.

Have you played it yet? Is there a demo? Apart from working on a modern system I don't see what this would offer above the DOS version.

Hopefully this release might encourage a brand new Zool game, certainly lots of potential.

I still use Win7 too! The only thing bugging me are possible viruses / attack doors. What do you use as anti virus ?

Why are you still using Windows 7? It's unsupported, and Windows 10 is a free upgrade.

@Chris_Y

Because I only use Windows for PC games on a BootCamp partition on a Mac not as a daily driver. Windows 7 has DirectX 11 so why the requirement for Windows 10?

Original Amiga Zool requirements:
68000@7MHz
512kiB memory
880kiB floppy

New Windows Zool requirements:
Core i3@3GHz (4th generation) 64 bit x86-64
8GiB memory
1GiB storage

Because Windows gets more bloated with every version?

@matthey

Actually the default download size of Windows 10 was smaller than Windows 7 when I checked but with constant updates it’s probably overtaken it by now I just like the look and feel of Windows 7. I prefer it to macOS in some ways but wireless Bluetooth headphone support is FAR better on macOS. Also, Apple have done everything in their power to kill the Mac as a gaming platform. iOS games are NOT proper computer games IMHO.

So does Zool Redimensioned work under Windows 7? Anyone tried it?

Never been a fan of Zool.
I don't like its candy-vomit aesthetic.

It sounds like training because... that's exactly what it is!

@Turrican3

Well they should have “training” in porting to something other than Windows 10

That's surely true of any OS as all the legacy stuff hangs around.

But Windows 10 is supposed to be smaller (@BigD apears to have confirmed this), and is certainly faster.

And it's supported, which is more important! Especially if you're connecting it to the Internet.

When I had a PC with 4GB of RAM and played a batman game the RAM wasn't enough when running Windows 7 but it did however work fine on Windows 8 so it seems to be useing less RAM.

A good antivirus program takes care of most security issues. The big problem is not MS dropping support but 3rd party programs dropping support for older versions of Windows, usually for no good reason. That is why I had to upgrade Windows XP which I liked better than Windows 7, was faster than Windows 7 and worked perfectly fine. From what I've seen of Windows 10 and heard from others, I would like Windows 10 even less. Windows 7 and 10 have the same minimum requirements.

Windows 7 and 10 requirements for 64 bit
1 GHz CPU
2 GiB memory
20 GiB storage

It's planned obsolescence when 10 year old computers are capable of doing what most people need. I wish computers were made that I wasn't forced to upgrade. The MS ecosystem encourages bloat by dropping support for older Windows versions on older but adequate hardware. Programmers then fluff up software for no reason. Take Zool for example of bloat over a long time period. The CPU clock frequency requirement has increased by over 400 times and the processor performance is likely over 1000 times higher. Memory requirements have increased by over 16,000 times and storage requirements by over 1000 times. Some people would call this progress but it's wasteful.

So back to the technical reasons why this game requires Windows 10;

It requires DirectX11 which Windows 7 supports and it’s a basic platform game programmed by kids and hence not even on the same level as Cuphead! So why the artificially inflated technical requirements?

And let's not forget the lack of support for older perfectly usable, sometimes better than current, hardware. I've seen funny videos of super happy dumpster divers finding great old hardware only to find out there's not drivers for it in Win10.

Also the privacy ... Win10 has so much hidden telemetry that it's probably still phoning home even after you think you've disabled it all....

@BigD
I know it's getting off topic but hey :)

Yes, out of literally billion installations what MS really wants to know is what YOU are doing...

You are simplified down to a series of numbers and preferences but yes they want to know how we tick and what to sell us! Fact of life now
