Are you willing to pay $100-$200 for updated firmware.

no pancakes option, if you do not have the hardware or is not interested don’t vote.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I'd have to think long and hard about it before answering, and definitely before dropping the cash. I own two X1000 computers (a black one and a white one, collect them all, haha) but I no longer have the kind of financial resources I did from those days. And my OS4 enthusiasm is at an all time low, to be honest.

It would be nice to be able to handle 1080p and 4K video on an X1000, but I assume that would require the new graphics driver and a new RX series graphics cards. And I assume/gather that a new CF firmware would be needed. So paying for new firmware and paying for a new driver and paying for a new graphics card.... that's a lot of paying. Not sure I'm up for it.

So am not voting just yet either. Like I said, will require thought.

@NutsAboutAmiga

What would a Pegasos 2 firmware update bring to my machine?

@Fairdinkem

I see you never wanted to use a PCI-e graphics card in your Pega 2.

Oh I did not realise that this is what would make that possible, that being the case sure I would love such an update.

@Fairdinkem

The current SmartFirmware can't "see" behind the PCI to PCI-e bridge, this is why you can't use any modern cards in the Pegasos 2. That being said Genesi isn't interested in releasing the Pegasos firmware or doing anything with it, so I'm not sure what's the point of this poll. It's not like there's anyone you could pay to update SmartFirmware

To see if there is any interest for this, and to figure out if it’s worth dong,
who, how, when.

I have some idea about who: someone with an emulator, and real hardware, maybe proto type in an emulator checks on real hardware, (if the hardware is emulated already.) QEMU supports many hardware configurations.

How, well I image if interest is big, then companies and individuals can be interested.

I’m not sure needs to be official FW, Smart Firmware is based on Open Firmware with some addons, the RDB partition table is simple, so if that’s all you need no problem, if you need FFS or something else, then it’s an lager problem, (but the code exists in the Linux kernel as AFFS or maybe AROS, it needs to be adapted).

The problem is workarounds and software fixes or anything that isn’t open source and is specific to the motherboard.

When, well can’t know that before the two first questions are answered, but it also depend on individual working on it, self interest is best motivator, $ is another, then its question of time available, and skill of developer, is he/she able pull it off.

Bunties is out of question, at least for the work, you will only collect ½ of if its bunty, and we lots bad experience where money paid upfront. But someone can do the work show it on YouTube, and collect the money.

Additional costs, development kits, flash kits, digital analyzers or anything else need to check if things are working correct. maybe small bunty can be collected a small amount money to get things going, donate the kit not the money.

I have an X1000, as much as Id like updates, I think i would prefer to put the money into either efforts in a updated Web Browser or Porting Os4 to ARM.

I think it would be best if you first find out if you can get access to the machine specific sources, find someone willing to do the work and how much money they want to perform the work, if they wish to be paid.

Find all that out first and then work from there. I don't think throwing an arbitary number out there is very helpful research.

You forget the 'what' - if you're asking people if they would be willing to pay up to $200 for an update, shouldn't you tell them first what kind of updates they would get for their money?

If this was to be an A-EONkit project, it would probably come with an U-Boot native version of a 16 color paint program from 1988 and it would be bundled with an ultra cheap mouse with a BoingBall sticker (and 15 different copyright notices and trademark claims). Not sure there's much of a target audience for that kind of update left.

USB, DMA or PCI fixes, on the other hand...

Maybe I'm mixing this up, but wasn't the X1000 CFE source code allegedly taken host... erm, lost?

For Pegasos2 could be reasonable swap smartfirmware with openfirmware and test it first with qemu and only later on real hardware.
Zoltan Balaton have already done such thing to support Peagos2 virtual board for qemu 6.1 release, sadly I don't know if we need some specific change to flash bios on a real hardware.
Anyway I could ask him.
I don't know any trick to recover a pegasos2 mobo with a wrong bios.
So we need an eprom programmer to reflash original bios if experiment fails.

Interesting question. I have all 3 machines. There is also Pegasos2 in qemu now.

We have uboot sources for xe, minus whatever alleged "hyperion os4 special sauce" may be added in the room. I understand it's been removed from mainline uboot for not adapting to the new driver model, so we would kindof need to do w new port for xe/ua1c to modern uboot and start over.

There was uboot for pa6t for their evaluation board. Perhaps that could be ported and updated for x1000...

And Perhaps we can start a new uboot port to peg2.

The x86 bios code emulation has been pulled out of the old a1xe board directory to become an I dependent driver, which is good. Kindof. I couldn't find anything about how to use it this way, when I spent a little time pondering that part.

It would be nice to add uboot/bios support for usb keyboards, to free us from ps2 keyboards plugged in just to be able to turn the thing on...

All interesting ideas. I had been interested in xe uboot updating a while ago, but never actually got doing anything. I'd pay something if someone was to actually do something here.

@Cheese

Not sure anyone has problem paying MorphOS team, if they decided to work on firmware, lots of talent, does not need to be Hyperion, CFE, UBOOT, Open (Smart) Firmware it’s all open source, and I’m not sure additions are so complicated to add.

I’m sure MorphOS team is motivated put MorphOS butterfly logo in before the OS boots.

Got no OS 4.x system atm. But theoretical spoken it depends,..

What should the update bring to me?
Do you to have to pay pre-orders?
Would there be someone taking responsibilities for hidden bugs?
Will the update be released in parts or all in once?

Would the option "AmigaONE-XE UBOOT" even include a new version for the Mirco AmigaOne ?

And as other commented, if would probably depends on what fixes, new features the firmware would include.

@NutsAboutAmiga

CFE is open source, but not the CFE that runs on the X1000, unless someone downloaded the SDK from P.A.Semi, it's private source now. It amounts to taking the CFE source, hacking it so that it runs OpenFirmware internally, then adding those boot and dir commands that can read RDB and FFS.

I don't think adding updated UEFI support would be trivial. Suppose most of the x86 emulator could remain. But it needs some kind of PJIT or speed up

And of course, speeding up boot would be needed, as it really needs to be as fast as a 20 year old PC and aiming for a 10 year old PC is where it should be at.
