What would be better: AmigaOS on a modern ISA, or AROS with a lot of apps? Posted on 27-Nov-2021 16:46:35

False choices really. A range of apps on AmigaOS would be just as good as a range of apps on AROS. The difference is if developers were going to port to AROS they'd have already done it already. At least A-EON has bought IP and allocated funds and developers to Libre Office, ImageFX, Octomed etc. MorphOS puts both to shame in terms of useful apps but for some reason binning AROS and AmigaOS and focusing on MorphOS isn't an option either (not that I necessarily agree with that). _________________ "Art challenges technology. | We have the mighty new 68080 with ammx and can run amigaos on it so that's the best :) |

Well, AOS4, AROS and MorphOS are running acceptable well for OSes with an old concept.
But they are all missing native applications, especially AROS that can run 68k programs only in its 68k variant, so I voted for the Apps. |

I'm not sure if WinUAE does the same. |

I do not understand that choice...
Aros 68k runs many applications and games
Aros runs on UAE
Aros runs on Vampire
Aros will run on PiStorm
Aros will run on itself on RPi (Michael the developer of emu68 is working on it)
any 68k application is there also aros application. Aros is basically implementing 3.1
So you cannot say there are no aros applications
I should know ;)
It is funny that people always talk about aros as if the 68k variant is not aros. Aros 68k is Aros as X86 but of course with the advantage of being binary compatible to amiga. Nevertheless Aros is Aros, be it X86 or 68k. Last edited by OlafS25 on 27-Nov-2021 at 09:49 PM. Last edited by OlafS25 on 27-Nov-2021 at 09:44 PM. Last edited by OlafS25 on 27-Nov-2021 at 09:44 PM.

Video editing, modern word processors, 3d games ...
that's why I voted for application over OSes. |

What "modern processors" or other uptodate applications exist on MorphOS or AmigaOS?
There is a 64bit version of aros with smp support but noone cares. For me reality is more important. Gallium support exists for years on Aros. Except some ports it has not changed much. I prefer to look at the current situation and try to go somewhere instead of looking at the stars. |

Seems to me that you have limited this poll to only 2 real choices.
What about MorphOS and OS4?
MorphOS currently has the most modern web browser and e-mail client.
A-EON team continue to create and update software for the OS4 environment.
But, I understand if you have no interest in MorphOS or OS4.

Yes, I limited the poll intentionally. If there are too many choices, each choice gets 12-15%, and nothing can be learned from the poll.

That exactly the reason why I voted for the option with the App.

What is "rally trolling?" I ducked it, but couldn't find anything...
Update: Re-reading this, it seems to me that it's probably a typo, i.e. "really trolling."
It's not trolling. It's based on this post. I didn't include MorphOS because not every poll has to be about everything.

| AROS has no serious apps. Everything what run on AROS 68k was made for Amiga Os.

That's one benefit of AROS hosted: the drivers. The other is you can use host OS apps, such as web browsers.
I like the idea of AROS running directly on the hardware, but there are significant advantages to running on a host OS._________________ "Unix is supposed to fix that." -- Jay Miner |

Sadly Aros is dead (now). Latest development was done 4 months ago: https://github.com/aros-development-team/AROS
Vampire branch only a bit better (additional work on drivers for the Vampire).
Who would write apps for the dead system? |
